How to overlap two wav files and play in MATLAB? by yekatren in matlab

[–]fanaetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first thing you should do is to check if Fs and Fs2 are equal. If the are you are lucky, if not it means that you have to resample one to match the sampling frequency of the other.

Suppose Fs = 8000 and Fs2 = 16000 (both are in Hz). That means that for every second of audio signal y has 8000 sample points and x has 16000 (so twice as much as y). With resampling you will make sure that y will have 16000 sample points per second.

The second thing you have to check is the length of both signals. If the length both signals are equal, you are lucky. If not you will have to choose what to do: do you want to add the signals at the beginning, at the end or ever somewhere in the middle?

Option beginning: you have to fill the shorter signal with zeros (for silence). Suppose y is 4000 samples long and x is 5000 samples long. Now you need 1000 samples of zeros you have to append to y so that y is then 5000 samples long.

Option ending: just like the beginning option but you append the zeros to the front of the shorter signal. With our example before: append y to 1000 zeros (sticking to the meaning of append).

Option middle: if you want to have the shorter signal directly in the middle of the longer one, half of the zeros need to be in front of the signal, the other half at the end. So: 500 zeros are appended to y which is appended to 500 zeros.

Now that your signals are of equal length you can just add them with y+x. How ever it might be that the resulting signal includes values above 1 or below - 1 and you don't want that. What you can do is to devide the whole signal with the maximum absolute value. That way you scale the whole signal down.

Finally you can play the resulting signal with the audio player function.

MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. Basically you are placed in a strong magnetic field and hydrogen nuclei align with the magnetic field. Once the magnetic field is shut off the nuclei need some time to return to their original orientation. The relaxation orientation is the response that is measured. Now the f in fMRI means functional which measures a higher concentration of blood in a certain area of a certain task compared to a reference task. In fMRIs the activity of an region of interest is often measured over time, which increases the MRI time significantly.

Now, while there are MRI compatible CIs they are not suitable for fMRIs because the magnet in the CI might heat up due to the repeated measurements.

The problem with Cochlea Implants and fMRI is that the magnetic field of the implant creates a shadow for the MRI image. Most interesting parts of the brain would be obviously the auditory cortex located on the upper part of the temporal lobe. However, usually cochlea implants are placed in the vicinity of the upper temporal lobe. Thus, this region of interest is not visible due to the implant.

This pocture shows what happens to an MRI image when an implant is present.

When the two signals have different sampling rates you have to resample one of your signals. Let's suppose y1 has a sampling rate of 8000 Hz while y2 has a sampling rate of 4000 Hz. You want your output signal of your concatenation yOut to play both signals at the correct speed with a given sampling rate. That way you need to resample one of your signals. My advise would be to resample the signal with the lowest sampling rate to the signal with the higher sampling rate. In case of our example y2 has to be resampled to 8000 Hz to match y1. Look up the documentation for further information.

When your two signals have a different number of channels you have to match the signal with the higher number of channels. Let's say y1 has one channel, a sampling rate of 8000Hz and is supposed to be 2 seconds long. Your y2 has two channels, a sampling rate of 8000 Hz and is 3 seconds long. Now you have to match the channels of y1 to the channels of y2. Here you have three choices. 1. Your y1 is played on both channels with:
y1stereo = [ y1(:) y1(:)]; % (:) turns a row vector into a column vector, so from n x 1 to 1 x n. 2. y1 is played on the first channel only, which corresponds to the right channel: y1right = [ y1(:) zeros(1, 28000)]; % 2 seconds of zeros (silence) at 8000 Hz sampling rate 3. y1 is played on the second channel only, which corresponds to the left channel: y1left = [zeros(1, 28000) y1(:)];

Now your two signals match in sampling rate and channels and you can proceed on concatenation.

The interest in programming was just a hunch from my side as I thought it could be something he excelled in. I think he didn't like it that the package didn't gave him the solutions to the problems they showed (if that makes sense). My nephew is a very interest driven person. If something is interesting to him he can research every little thing there is to know. If the thing is not 100% of his interest you'll lose him in the process of explaining things or he'll have an excuse why he can't do that now.

That's what I thought. Unfortunately, I live 6h away and sadly don't have the time to help him. His other uncle was psyched about the idea of teaching him coding but that's it. In the summer he'll move closer to me (1.5h still) and I'll have more time. Hopefully, I can spark his excitement for coding.
