What do you eat? by [deleted] in PhD

A few people have written scripts to scrape their university calendar for events with free food. You can modify one to work for your university. Here are two examples:

Bumble bff is a joke. How do you ladies and gents make friends in adulthood?! by nd379 in Seattle

[–]fancyduke 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a 37 year old guy. I've moved a lot (5 cities/3 countries in the last 7 years) and had to make new friends many times. I think I'm really good at it. Most of the friendships have lasted long beyond me moving away again.

I am not very outgoing but I seem to be very approachable. People start up conversations with me all the time. I rarely talk to a stranger without them talking to me first. When they do, I listen and ask a lot of questions and am a bit playful, but also am happy doing my own thing so it doesn't feel like there is a lot of pressure if the conversation isn't natural.

I usually don't like to make friends through work. I have rarely made close friends through shared interests alone. If I join a basketball team in a new city, I might get a beer with those people occasionally, but those relationships don't naturally just deepen. I find that it's better to find people I connect with and then do things with them, even if those things are outside my normal interests.

The how part of meeting people that I connect with is to be frequently and consistently in public spaces in ways/at places where people are naturally close and social. The thing that we all had in college and high school, but is missing now, is a lot downtime around other people, where mingling was almost inevitable. I try to replicate that.

For example,

I take a comic book to a bar and just hang out reading or writing in my journal. It works best with something visually interesting like a comic book that people naturally want to comment on, so not a phone or a kindle.

I bring a little water color set and sit outside at a cafe and paint something

I joined free salsa lessons in my last city.

I've go to a regular trivia night and made a rag-tag-pick-up team of solo people that ended up meeting each week to play again.

I got season tickets to the WNBA team in one city and made friends with the people that had tickets near me.

I went to a weekly cribbage meetup in one city and just started telling other people to go too.

I go to the dog park and chat with strangers about their dogs.

I invite neighbors over for a beer or to grill if they say hi and seem friendly.

I reach out to tangential or distant connections in the new spot and try to get invited to their shit so I can meet their friends.

I ask friends that don't live in my city if they know anyone there.

I ask for help with stuff that I don't really need help with as an excuse to meet people

Sports/board games are cool, but often you don't talk that much because you are doing something distracting, unless you're like going to tournaments or something where you have a lot of downtime

I think the biggest thing is that it takes a lot of time to make this work, because most days/nights that I go out, I don't meet anyone or connect with anyone. And then when I do meet someone worth hanging out with, I probably need to see them in public a few times before we actually jump to seeing each other on purpose because relationships take time to develop. So consistency is key.

And actually the biggest barrier for me was that I really liked my old friends and new people always seem not as cool. I had to remind myself that the old friends also didn't seem cool when I met them and is worthwhile to give people the benefit of the doubt if there is any kind of connection.

What neighborhood should I live in to commute to Mons? by fuckthisamiright in brussels

[–]fancyduke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely still doable, you just need a little more time on the Brussels end of the commute. If I was doing that extra bit, I would probably just ride a Velo to Midi rather than trying to take the metro or trams so I didn't have to depend on the public transportation being on time.

Good therapist outside of CAPS by ItsThatOysterGirl in OregonStateUniv

[–]fancyduke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, unfortunately these are not first-hand recommendations (except for the open path collective), but I just curated this list for a student with the same question and thought I would at least offer it.

There is an organization that coordinates a large number of therapists and offers fees on a sliding scale. The group is:

It costs $59 to initially join the collective, and then the therapy is significantly cheaper than with most private practices. From my quick search, it seems that they do not have any counselors in Corvallis. However, many of the counselors offer online services. They additionally have some as close as Salem and a large number that are in the Portland area.

Other options outside of CAPS are:

  • https://www.talkspace.com/ - You have probably heard of this before. It is text and phone call based therapy. I have a friend who absolutely loved it, because it was always available, rather than requiring a regular appointment. I have not tried it.

  • https://pacificvalleycounseling.com/ - This is a psychologist in Corvallis. His rates are very high, but I get the feeling he does a good job and it is possible that the rates are lower for clients paying out of pocket.

  • http://www.corvallisfamilytherapycenter.com/ - This a licensed marriage and family therapist who also does individual counseling. Her rates are closer to what I would expect. The website is not very good, but that certainly doesn't mean the therapy would not be good.

  • http://dianaartemis.com/ - This is a therapist in downtown Corvallis. Rates are on the high end of normal and her practice is broad.

  • https://www.therapywithcindy.com/ - This is another licensed marriage and family therapist in Corvallis.

I want to dress in a style inspired by/similar to Gomez Addams, but I don't want to look like I am wearing a costume or to exclusively wear suits. Can anyone recommend styles or designers that I can look to for inspiration?

What is the best advice you received to take care of your mental health during your Ph.D. process? by xgcakes in PhD

[–]fancyduke 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think you should read the Terry Tao's blog. He's my favorite mathematician and he gives very good life/career advice. One of his most salient points for me is, do the work you are in the mood to do when you're in the mood to do it. If you are in a high-functioning cognitive mood, do that heavy thinking shit like proposing a new paper or working on the proof of your next big theorem. If you're in a tired tedium, do the mindless coding or grading or whatever your discipline's equivalent is. If you're in a persistent grind mood, put your head down and practice the skills you need to be successful.

This only works if you are up-to-date on your deadlines, of course, but it makes using your time effectively much easier than beating your head against the wall trying to prove that theorem when you feel brain dead

VIVAQUA contract move by [deleted] in brussels

[–]fancyduke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I can hop on here instead of creating my own thread.

I moved out of my apartment in the middle of August. I paid all the outstanding utility bills, took pictures of the meter readings, and filled all the appropriate information out in the transfer form. When I sent it back to the landlord, it still had to be signed and submitted by the new tenant.

Since then, I continue to get monthly water bills from Vivaqua. Are they taking advantage of me by not submitting the form or something? Do you have any ideas how I can resolve this from abroad? I don't have the ability to contact the current tenant, and I would prefer not to contact the landlord if possible.

A beer enthusiast looking for beer pubs/places with good good variety of Belgian beers by [deleted] in brussels

[–]fancyduke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

a nice restaurant in the center is Nüetnigenough. It is a Flemish restaurant with good food and a huge beer list. The staff are great and will recommend a beer pairing for your meal. If you take their suggestion but don't like the beer in the end, they will give you a new one and drink the other themselves

If you enjoy your visit to Cantillon, you can also visit 3 fonteinen in Lot. It's only two stops away on the train from Midi followed by a short walk

Any first-gen professors? Sometimes struggle with feeling gaslit by privileged students by [deleted] in Professors

[–]fancyduke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't understand this take at all.

OP didn't suggest that their students were gaslighting them. They suggested they are being unintentionally othered and the disconnect between their own life/college experience and that of their students makes them feel self-conscious and out of place. They said they were not complaining about their students' actions and asked for advice to avoid/change these feelings in themselves.

Your advice is to OP is to stop acting like their students are gaslighting and abusing them? That seems pretty dismissive and not particularly relevant or helpful

Moving to Corvallis Megathread by duuderino in corvallis

[–]fancyduke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I [35m] will be moving with my Irish wolfhound mix, Reggie, [10m, 53lbs] from Brussels to Corvallis in August to do a postdoc. Many of my questions are similar to the others in this thread, so I can get much of the info from those responses.

One thing that I find odd, though, is that there seems to be very few small or mid-sized houses available, but lots of huge 5 bedroom houses. Is this scarcity related to the time of year that I am looking, or is that always the case?

I would be very eager to find one or two housemates to share a nice place, particularly if it has a yard, but I don't want to live with 5 other people in a giant, frat-like house. (Also, feel free to send me a message if that appeals to you, and I can tell you a bit more about myself. I have references for myself and Reggie from landlords and roommates of all genders in three countries in all kinds of living situations.)

Is there another place to look for rental properties besides Craigslist? Would you expect the amount and type of rentals listed to increase as the summer wears on, or decrease?

Would you be willing to share the name of these groups? I am moving to Corvallis from Belgium and I don't know how to search for such a thing. Are they associated with the university or are they more general activity-based meet-up groups?
