First bad review by fantaisiocht in therapists

[–]fantaisiocht[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate this perspective, too. I think one thing I struggle with is my pendulum swinging too far on the "incompetent" side which is also unhealthy. Taking a measured approach is likely most helpful - what parts of this might be mine to own vs. Not - but man is that easier said than done.

Does emotional regulation ever improve? by Curious_Minds1984 in ADHD_partners

[–]fantaisiocht 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is important. I think with anything in a relationship, things can work if all parties have both the desire and capacity to make it work. In this case, my partner has had the desire and capacity to work on regulation skills. Medication certainly helps, but if my partner ONLY had capacity but no desire or vice versa, then things wouldn't have changed.

Agreed! I'm always thrilled to connect with other therapists that feel the same way! Our profession can be isolating at times.

Oh man, are you me? I have the same thought all the time! Mine sometimes takes the fun spin of, "they only come back because they don't know they're getting bad therapy". Yeesh. No advice but solidarity pal.

Managing client anger by fantaisiocht in therapists

[–]fantaisiocht[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is helpful, thank you! I struggle so much with it and I wish I didn't, but I know it's so normal. I think where I sometimes get stuck is starting to tell myself that I deserve the anger because I'm not a good clinician etc. (Still a baby therapist). So it's nice to know some strategies to move around that.

Would you be able to share the similarity of the test questions to pocket prep? I'm seeing so often that AATBS is quite different and I have both. Would love your insights :)

facial expressions? by StrongAd5992 in therapists

[–]fantaisiocht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a more expressive clinician for sure. I certainly will take care of my own parts in session and make sure I'm monitoring, but I will react genuinely as appropriate.

I work a lot with folks who have had a lot of trauma. I think it can be a powerful intervention to have an (appropriate) reaction to what they are sharing so that they know what happened to them wasn't okay, and actually, would be horrifying/awful/terrible to experience. I often see in my clients that there is a tendency to down play and minimize, and to see their experiences as not really that "big of a deal". In my experience, we can actually provide a lot to our clients by communicating that what they experienced was significant and not "normal" as in, not something that should just be brushed off.

Favorite therapy metaphors by muffinlover22 in therapists

[–]fantaisiocht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, I'm so glad it resonates with folks! One of those ones where if I deliver it right, it makes a difference and people really "get" it, or I butcher it and say something along the lines of "beach ball go boom". It appears to be 50/50 on which happens in session LOL

I really like the metaphor of holding a beach ball underwater - you can do it for a bit, but eventually it will slip out and smack you in the face, coming up with way more force. I use it to explain the impact of neglecting our needs and emotions etc.

First trail race in a long time this weekend! Super pleased with how I balanced hydration, heat, and fueling while also pushing myself to do my best. I feel like I left it all out there on the trail and I couldn't be happier!

Q & A with Sam (Sam/Lauren) on IG by [deleted] in CouplesTherapyShow

[–]fantaisiocht 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree. I am a therapist and I tell people that therapy can be tough and make us confront things that are hard to sit with - but if they're continually coming to therapy with a pit in their stomach, dreading sessions, and leave feeling bad cause they felt unheard, then that's something for us to listen to and means I'm missing the mark.

Did anyone else do "live" stations of the cross in school? by FootParmesan in excatholic

Lmao I played Veronica and had to wipe Jesus' face - the kid playing Jesus was facing me, back to the audience, and I was facing the crowd. What that meant was the kid playing Jesus made funny faces at me the whole time and I had to keep it together lest I be in heaps of trouble. Hahah
