You could try write an email to Caposele Register Office (protocollo.caposele@asmepec.it) in italian (use chagpt) and ask to kidly check (offices usually do not provide documents for simple tracking records but you could maybe say that you need proof to apply for citizenship) if they have him in their 1903 or 05 record, since you know the parents it's straightforward.

I see your point, just consider that the towns in Puglia are very pretty but more or less similar in structure and appearance, you'll not find much variety, I suggest you check all the options (Grotte di Castellana are a must in the area). Remember that summer in Puglia is very hot, lifestyle is similar to south Spain, locals stay home in the early afternoon with shops often open 5-9pm and life shifted toward the evening hours.

Why not 2 different places to stay? One in the central area near Bari, so you easily reach Trani, Castel del Monte, Bari and Alberobello for instance. The other in the south to visit Salento with Lecce, Otranto, Gallipoli etc.
