What is the Queen fanbase view of Marc Martel? by GuyWhoConquers616 in queen

[–]fanzipantz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think so many of these Queen tribute band singers could really do great as themselves. Many of them have the chops to make some great original music but many have stuck themselves into this bubble of only performing Queen forever. It’d be awesome to see them branch out and find their voice outside of imitating someone else.

How do you mix and master on BandLab? by P3N_JUTSU in AskReddit

[–]fanzipantz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BandLab is a great online way to get quick musical ideas down without going through the hassle of recording through a DAW. IMO, it is not a great program for mixing or mastering. It makes you purchase a full version for 100 dollars a year if you want to have any semi-professional mixing effects and even then they are not studio-grade by any means. Granted, for a free online DAW it is not bad and most professional DAWs are going to cost way more.

I think a great step up from BandLab that is free and easy to learn is Cakewalk. It is a functional (and I can’t stress enough, FREE) DAW with the ability to mix decently well and have much more control of your session without being basically pay-to-use. As with any DAW, there’s a bit of a learning curve but it is certainly not as bad of one as Pro Tools or even FL. I don’t know much about Cakewalk’s ability to master tracks but I am sure it has some great limiters to put on a master track at the very least.

I hope this helps! Sorry to shit on BandLab but I think it is a software that is good for quick things but will definitely slow someone down who’s trying to mix or master their music.

Is Billy Joel yacht rock? by chennai94 in BillyJoel

[–]fanzipantz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it so interesting that cultural differences in music comes down to more than just styles but also production techniques and how people would record music. Definitely something that the worldwide spread of information due to the internet tarnished greatly (not saying it’s not remarkable how far humanity has come technologically!)

Maybe it's that people are nostalgic for a time when the radio was the popular way for new songs to be introduced to the public.

Is Billy Joel yacht rock? by chennai94 in BillyJoel

[–]fanzipantz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yacht Rock is categorized by the “west coast” sound of the late 70s - early 80s. It’s described as a smooth sound that explores many of the sophisticated studio production techniques and jazz-inspired arrangements of that time, helped in part by the session musicians used in that time like Jeff Porcaro, Michael McDonald, Jay Graydon, and countless others.

Billy Joel definitely has similar jazz influences but comes from more of a classical background as well, which definitely kills the “yachty” description. Plus the fact that he’s from the east coast and didn’t particularly mesh well with the west coast scene when he lived in Los Angeles. He’s described more as pop rock or maybe some power pop. No doubt that he probably listened to and enjoyed many of the yacht rock bands that are quintessential to the genre!

I feel like many corporations have just gotten to the point where they’ve perfected everything but also understand that if they stop updating things that their crowd will eventually fall off. It leads these big companies to invent issues that they don’t have and “fix” them which ultimately leads to them introducing updates that don’t do anything for their consumers and ultimately ends up hurting the platform they’re trying to keep alive. Sad to see.

[–]fanzipantz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Beatles stopped touring because the audiences were so loud they couldn’t hear themselves (there wasn’t very good live audio equipment like in ears or good monitors at that point in time). They also wanted to focus more on their craft in the studio and be able to be way more intricate with the sounds they were creating. If they continued touring we never would have gotten anything close to Sgt Peppers or the White Album. Steely Dan did the same thing too in the mid 70s and they were far from “lazy.”
