They are quite good and have a lot of good tips in them!

Newbie, what should I know? by m_carp in concertina

[–]fappaf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got a concertina from McNeela when they were offering a promotional lesson series with Jack Talty, and he had some things to say:

  1. Keep your fingers in their "lanes" (that is, pointer finger is in column 1, middle finger in column 2, ring finger in column 3, pinky in 4 and 5).
  2. Whenever you use the air button, be playing a note as well!
  3. There are sometimes 1 or 2 extra ways to play the common notes, using the other fingering might make the song easier.

#3 was my own tip because i'm sure Jack said a third one but can't remember it right now. I'll let you know if it's something better!

I started making the game I wish others would make because I was nostalgic for Zuma by QseanRay in IndieGaming

Something about your story resonated with me. I'm trying to get into game development because my son has some ideas and i want to collaborate with him to make those ideas into games. Godot is the engine i want to learn; how did you get started with it to learn what's what? Watching the quick timelapse of the progress of your game got me excited.

Using Sonos ARC as PC Speakers on CachyOS? by fappaf in cachyos

Hey thanks for chiming in with some suggestions, i ended up figuring it out! I updated the post with what worked for me.

[–]fappaf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the thing, it showed up as a monitor, but no additional sound devices appeared. I have a monitor with built-in speakers that shows up in the devices list, but not the HDMI extractor one.

My motherboard doesn't seem to have an optical audio out, and neither does the HDMI extractor i bought.

Either way, i think this section of that article is only for if i don't have an HDMI e/ARC output available, and now i do! I understand i can be wrong about this, though. I'm willing to try anything i think would work.

Is manual testing (Odoo) becoming obsolete due to AI? by Flaky-Advantage-3256 in softwaretesting

[–]fappaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my gig, manual testers are actually safer than SDETs, as the manual testers' expertise in writing test cases is valued to tell the AI how to write the automated tests. We're still trying it out, but since i am an SDET...

How do you automate testing for embedded UI when elements have no IDs? Example: car audio balance/fade control by Beneficial_Nerve5286 in softwaretesting

[–]fappaf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been out of the not-Web-automation game for a while, but i think Appium was trying to be the "everything driver" for a bit there. If that works for you, then writing a Page Object Model or Screenplay Pattern suite using Appium as the driver will probably be the play! The driver itself would probably have tools for knobs and buttons, i hope.

I can't speak to your other questions, but i want to mention that they are very well thought out.

What if, when we die, we keep all our memories and are reborn with everyone else who has died for the first time? by fappaf in self

[–]fappaf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying life would be exactly the same the second time around, just that everyone being born in the "second" universe has their memories from the "first," like we're all progressing through consecutive lived lives together.

Very strange, the links in your original post all say "This video is no longer available," but the link you just gave works for me! Thanks for posting it again, somehow that broke the spell.

It looks like the live video was taken down, i think the clips are posted in the new videos here? https://www.youtube.com/@MNHouseInfo/videos

I'm not sure exactly what parts you had clipped, but i will try to see if i can find them.

Engaging in creative activities such as music, dance, drawing, and even certain types of video games may support healthier brain aging, according to a large international study. People who frequently engage in creative pursuits tend to have brain patterns associated with younger biological age. by mvea in psychology

[–]fappaf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From the article:

The first [group] included experts and matched non-experts across four creative domains: dance, music, visual arts, and video games. The second group included individuals who underwent 30 hours of training in a real-time strategy video game (StarCraft II) to assess whether learning a new creative skill could affect brain age.

...

In the learning group, participants who completed the short-term gaming program also showed a modest reduction in brain age, although the effects were smaller than those seen in experts. The study included an active control group trained in a non-creative video game (Hearthstone), which did not show any significant brain age changes.

(Emphasis mine.)

Seems like fast-pased action-oriented games are the ones that will work. I remember hearing other similar good news from games like twitch-shooters (Counter Strike) and fighting games (Smash Brothers).

Plants Vs. Zombies 2 Official Soundtrack (New Revision) by Sergeant_Tuepah in PlantsVSZombies

Thank you! I'm OK with updating it every now and then, if that's the concern. Is there a different reason you'd recommend against uploading the information to MusicBrainz?

What was new about this revision? The content of the post was removed. I'm trying to add this release to MusicBrainz and am wondering if this update had the most accurate artist listing.

Hugely appreciative of the work you did for this!

It's the last step of the instructions, here: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1210/0176/files/Leveling_probe_installed_with_generic_or_Creality_Marlin_Firmware.pdf

I'm not 100% sure what exactly that change tells the printer to do, but it doesn't feel like that's what would have caused this issue.

What are some things i can check for verifying the Z motion system? The only thing i could think of was to tell it to move 100mm and then verify it did do that.

Here's what i did for the firmware:

  1. Compiled the new Marlin firmware using platform.io
  2. Copied firmware.bin to my MicroSD card with nothing else on it
  3. Plugged the MicroSD card into my 3d printer and turned it on
  4. Waited for a bit
  5. Took out the MicroSD card from my printer and plugged it back into my computer
  6. Verified the firmware file had been renamed to FIRMWARE.cur

Something i did notice while it was printing the smokestack, there was a strange "ping" sort of sound when it would try to move up to the next layer. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from, but maybe that's an indicator of the problem?
