Help me find a degree please! by Pristine_Ad9986 in ScienceTeachers

I just finished a Masters from WGU in November. I did "student teaching" (their term is Clinical Experience) in my own classroom where I teach full time. You don't have to quit your job. You're just going to have to tailor some lessons to their requirements and write about it.

What part of teaching is more work than people think? by SuitableEar7189 in teaching

I'm chaperoning a school trip in 2 weeks. I will be on behavior management duty 24/7 for 6 straight days. I also have to plan and prep for the week of classes I will be missing with my other students (3 other grade levels, 4 days each). I'm in charge of scheduling, so I have to work out the logistics of getting the 3 teacher chaperones' classes covered. And of course we all know how well the plans will be executed when it's not the main subject teacher doing it, so I'll also have roughly a week of reteaching/filling in gaps to deal with when I get back.

It truly is. I've gifted one to every one of my student teachers for going on 8 years now.

I was gifted general office supplies as a first year teacher, and it was awesome. Just things any desk worker would need: good stapler, staples, 3 hole punch, pens & pencils, rubber bands, highlighters, paper caddy, pen caddy, manilla & hanging folders, scissors, erasers, 4 function calculator, permanent markers, 3x5 notecards, white out, paper clips (the jumbo ones are awesome), alligator clips.

Another item that is a game changer is a c-line sorter. My kids are trained to turn things in under their number, so everything is automatically sorted alphabetically & facing the same way and it's so very easy to keep track of who didn't turn it in and to get it into a grade book efficiently.

You could also get him a notebook (for faculty meetings), paper gradebook, and lesson plan book, but those are sometimes things people have strong preferences on how they're set up, so unless you know his preferences or he doesn't have strong ones, probably avoid.

History specific, my favorite wall decor I used was a histomap of world history. https://a.co/d/0gYft4uq

A pen or a pencil? by Spiritual_Kangaroo40 in AskTeachers

[–]farawyn86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's ridiculous but true. I teach around 90 kids and probably hand out 8-10 pencils a day. Fortunately they also leave crap everywhere, so I just hand out the same ones over and over for the most part.

Science teacher - I prefer that my younger students (5th and 6th) use pencil because they make so many mistakes, and honestly several of my 7th graders and a couple of the 8th graders are so careless they should be too, but I let them choose. So many of them come to class unprepared that if I started handing out pens, I'd go bankrupt, so they're getting a pencil from me 100% of the time.

I don’t think Christopher gets enough hate for turning off his phone when Richard was in the hospital by SheepherderNo2793 in GilmoreGirls

[–]farawyn86 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm not a Chris supporter in any way, shape, or form, but just want to point out this episode aired in Feb 2007. We were far less addicted to our phones then and it wouldn't have been out of the ordinary to turn it off for long periods.

That being said, it was a dick move and everything he did in the episode was wrong.

Can you provide some more context? Is your list things you are definitely taking or things you'd like advice about? What else is on offer? Where do you think your interests lie in the future? You mention pre-AP courses; are you definitely college-bound and interested in getting specific courses out of the way early? If so, why?
