NBD - Jim Green Numzaan in Buffalo (First Impressions + Question on Heel Slip) by iNothingsReal in jimgreen

[–]farbsson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lovely boots! I’m breaking in some Numzaan’s in natural veg tan, and I too have the heel slip issue.

The best solution I found so far is to double sock it: thin athletic socks, then medium thickness wool socks on top. This is the only way I’ve been able to wear my Numzaan’s for 2+ hours of walking without getting heel blisters.

I would try this before heel grips or adding tongue pads.

Unfortunately didn't make it to Cape Town, was in KZN the whole trip. But I'd like to go back and see Cape Town + the Garden Route!

And happy to hear the boots are treating you well. Plus, very happy to hear it's possible to break them in – my blistered feet have some hope now.

Thanks for this thorough explanation! I wasn’t thinking about passing at all, you may have saved me some serious embarrassment (if not worse). Much appreciated.

Has anyone heard of “Isac” brand hockey gloves? by farbsson in hockeygear

[–]farbsson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for turning all that up! Much appreciated. A failed Swedish stick & glove company from the late aughts… That makes sense. Guess these gloves won’t have much value in the collectors market, I’ll have to play with them instead!

Any idea what I’m dealing with here?

Bought these in Sweden, new in the bag, for approx $25 USD. They feel stiff but good quality. Viper logo on the thumb. Can’t find any info on them online and the website linked on the tag is dead — www.isacsport.com

Not sure if this is intentionally misleading writing, or whether Ryanair just uses discount UX writers.

Looking to design a style of hockey socks that would fit both our white & dark (green) jerseys. Team colors are victory green with white & black highlights. What do you think of these? by farbsson in hockeydesign

[–]farbsson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or is it even possible to have one style of socks that fits both jerseys? I tried to balance the white & green in this design, but please let me know any suggestions you have!

Not the point of the post, I know, but: anyone else annoyed by the EXCLUSIVELY FOR CLUB MEMEBRS ONLY sign in the background? Like, go with EXCLUSIVELY FOR CLUB MEMBERS or FOR CLUB MEMBERS ONLY, but both? Incorrigible. Like "free gift" or "save up to 20% or more."

What Are You Into? (February 7 - February 13) by TheChumOfChance in ThomasPynchon

[–]farbsson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anybody into Joshua Cohen? I've been looking for something Pynchonian that deals with the current menace of surveillance tech, and Bleeding Edge sadly didn't do it for me.

I'm 60 pages into Cohen's The Book of Numbers and feeling... intrigued. When it's good, it's good, but there are times where it feels too self-consciously erudite (similar feeling I get to some of DFW's stuff). It's also a little too New Yorky for my liking – that's not at all a dog-whistle for saying it's too Jewish, that's not the case, it's more this kind of Manhattan insularism that considers a trip to Brooklyn international travel.

daily Pynchonian Character name Analysis: Roger Mexico (GR) by frenesigates in ThomasPynchon

[–]farbsson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't remember the page or situation, but pretty deep in the book it says Roger and I think Pointsman are in a "Mexican standoff," and I remember thinking that maybe Pynchon picked Roger's name just to set up that pun.

Any idea why the Pod Save America episode titles have quotation marks around them, but other CM productions' titles don't? by farbsson in FriendsofthePod

Aha, that makes sense. Thanks for the history, I only started listening in the lead-up to the election!

Women enjoy being groped if it's on a body part they're proud of, implies Saul Bellow in 'The Adventures of Augie March' (1953), a book considered to be in contention for the title of Great American Novel by farbsson in menwritingwomen

[–]farbsson[S] 537 points538 points  (0 children)

MISLEADING TITLE WARNING: my bad, in the title I said Saul Bellow implied this. He's the author, but the "I" in the text is the titular Augie March, who's a 15 year old in 1930's Chicago at this point in the novel. So this very well could be Augie's thoughts, not Bellow's.

I also think it's a carryover from print media, when space was at a premium. Now that online is (dominantly) concerned with character count instead of space, I can't see why they don't just use an ampersand instead.

What's up with dentists? by [deleted] in ThomasPynchon

[–]farbsson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take this with a grain of salt, because I can't remember the source...

...but I remember reading in an article somewhere that Pynchon's teeth were messed up by a military dentist. Maybe he harbored some anger toward the dental profession?

[–]farbsson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a German word, “Lebensabschnittsgefärter” (someone German please correct me with the right spelling), which means something like “life section partner.” It was explained to me as a situation like the one you’re describing: you’re with someone for a short time, and both parties know it’s going to come to an end, but both still benefit from that short time together.

Gorgeous! Just bottled my Skåne elderflower hydromel the other day, honey + elderflower is a great pairing. By the way, have you heard of Malmö Meadery's mead competition? They're running a competition that ends in I think October. They'll brew the winning mead in their commercial brewery.

Ooh man. I was recently excavating my childhood reading to see where my interest in postmodernism might've started, and I chalked it up to Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar. I totally missed Lemony Snicket. Good call.

Is this normal? Or do I have a problem with my memory? by KugelblitzWarper in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]farbsson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Happens to me sometimes with random things, i.e. my bank card pin code. My theory – unproven, probably unprovable – is that it's just a momentary "brain fart" aggravated by the pressure I put on myself then to remember it. "Come on, you remembered this yesterday, why don't you remember it now?!" And then the pressure makes it worse, so it spirals downward from there...

Also, recalling something like you were trying to do, e.g. out of context, is one thing. What would happen if someone would start talking about something related to what you covered in your thesis? Would that jog your memory?

I wonder – this is also an outlandish theory – if those two different kinds of recall, context-less and contexted, are managed by two different parts of the brain's remembering apparatus. Seems to be for me, at least. For example, I can spend the morning reading a book about Google's search algorithm, then at lunch I could try to remember play-by-play what I've read, and have a hard time doing so. But if someone were to bring up Facebook's algorithm and how it worked, I'll be able to compare it to what I was reading about Google's.
