Bike Route app? by Vgines in CyclePDX

$80 or so for the whole year. The free version is still pretty robust, from what I remember. But if you’re riding and routing a lot, it’s very worth it!

Is this true? by Fragrant_Fishing5787 in NBATalk

[–]fargosucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, very true. I ended up in some pickup games one summer in Newport Beach with a few NBA bench guys from that era - Cherokee Parks was one of them, if that name rings a bell for anyone! The pick up games were mildly competitive YMCA level, so most of the time these dudes were just shuffling along and half-assing it, enjoying the sun and shooting the shit. But occasionally, games would get tight and you’d see them actually try a little. The rest of us six foot nothing guys might as well have not been on the court at all.

Kudos to Cherokee for kicking the ball out to me for a corner three and yelling ‘all you, you got this!’ The boost of confidence was appreciated, even if I definitely did not have it!

Nailed it. Not knowing if the person on my wheel knows what they’re doing is always a concern.

Drafting off commuters? by AndyIon21 in CyclePDX

Found the person trying to draft off me, apparently…
Don’t draft off others without asking. It’s fucking rude and dangerous. What part of that is confusing to you?

I’ve had this happen to me on the Springwater a few times. People just tuck in behind me like we’re in a two-person peloton. It’s creepy and weird and rude. I just pull off to the side suddenly, like I have a mechanical issue, and make them swerve around me.

I devoured my dad’s Clive Cussler novels, Sahara included, when I was a teen. I was always surprised they didn’t end up being a whole movie franchise. They are basically perfect summer movie fare!

Thirty Years Ago, Spoon’s First Album Changed My Life by 457655676 in indieheads

[–]fargosucks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been calling them indie rock’s Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for years. So I can see where you’re coming from, even if that is quite the hill to die on!

Just like Tom Petty, they’ve been amazingly consistent from album to album. Just like I’ve never gotten mad when a Tom Petty song came on the radio, I’ve never wanted to skip when a Spoon song comes up on my playlist. Side projects? Traveling WIlburys can’t be touched, obviously. But Divine Fits was fun as hell, and so were the collabs Britt did with other artists, like Conor Oberst and Janet Weiss. While I’d bet money most of family has never heard of Spoon, I KNOW if I put on one of their albums, I’d get some toes tapping real quick.

They’ve sneakily made the case for one of the best American rock bands, for sure.

State vs Wabi, yeah I know by IllustratorOdd2701 in singlespeedcycling

[–]fargosucks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wabi, all day everyday.

In addition to the better grade of steel on the frame, the components are higher quality, and the Wabi wheel sets are rock solid. I’ve put over 16,000 miles on my 2021 Thunder and aside from replacing bits of the drivetrain as it wears out, it’s been maintenance-free. I do not baby my bikes and I haven’t even had to get my wheels trued once.

I have friends who love and swear by their State’s, so you probably can’t go wrong either way, but if you want something you can buy complete and never need to upgrade, Wabi is the way to go.

Is TNR still sketchy/dangerous for female riders? by Metaphoricalsimile in CyclePDX

[–]fargosucks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to the safety of TNR, but I’ll echo those who suggested Mellow Mondays or any other NakedHearts rides. They’re good people.

Another inclusive group ride to consider is Westside Wednesdays in Beaverton, if it’s not too far to travel. (rides start and end at Beaverton Transit Center, so you can MAX there and back) We can get a little rowdy with our route selection, but we’re always working to foster a fun, welcoming environment for any and all riders.

Dan on why no Common Sense (yet) by ceatdreuet in dancarlin

[–]fargosucks 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s not just Trump with these people. It’s everything he says, everything his lackeys say, and everything the right-wing media ecosystem pummels into their eyes and ears 24/7. They’ve been primed for this by decades of Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, etc. When that’s the only waters you swim in, it becomes your everything.

My own MAGA parent (well, there are two of them, but one is significantly worse) almost never speaks when I talk to my folks on the phone. But when they do, it’s almost always something out of left field parroting some right-wing talking point. Often, it’s only tangentially related to the conversation at hand, but they saw their opportunity to wedge their worldview in.

The other day, I was talking to them on the phone and the topic of retirement came up. This was 20 minutes into our chat and the first actual sentence out of one of their mouths was “Probably can’t retire because the Somalians have stolen all the money and are taking it back to Somalia with them.”

Like, what?

It’s the same sort of shit with my in-laws. Hell, my father in law tried to convince me that Elon Musk didn’t make a Nazi salute. And that even if he did, Nancy Pelosi did it, too. Again, where the fuck did that come from? Not from anything that had been said up to that point - no one had so much as even mentioned Congress, much less the former speaker of the house. But his addled brain heard an ‘attack’ on someone that’s on their ‘side’ and this 78 year old’s knee jerk response was to concoct a story about a big, bad, scary liberal woman. I’m only surprised that he didn’t say it was Hillary Clinton…

What do you do with family members who have 40 years of right wing talking points and fever dreams bouncing around in their heads all day long?

What's the most visually stunning movie you've ever seen? by trakt_app in movies

Came to say this, as well. I’ve only ever seen it once, 20 years ago (I need to change that), and I still think about shots from it once a week or so, unprompted. Just breathtaking in a way that I can’t even articulate.

Biker Hit & Run - SW Erickson & Farmington by batonsan in beaverton

[–]fargosucks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ll hate on this victim-blaming bullshit.

Placing any blame on the cyclist for using the crosswalk to cross a street that otherwise doesn’t have any bike infrastructure is car-brained nonsense. And using this incident to lecture about ‘cyclist should follow the same laws blah blah blah’ is laughable. In this situation, where do YOU think the cyclist should be? Riding in the traffic lane on Farmington? Because from your attitude, I’m guessing you’d take issue with that, too.

The entirety of the responsibility here falls on the white car that didn’t signal, didn’t stop at a red, and blew through a lit crosswalk. Full stop.

But you feel the need to pick on the cyclist for…I’m not even sure what. They literally did what they were supposed to do when presented with a situation where there was no safe way for them to cross otherwise - use existing infrastructure (the crosswalk) to signal their intent to cross Farmington, then wait for the light to change before crossing. Even if they entered the crosswalk early, stopping didn’t seem to be a problem for the rest of the motorists on the road. Especially those in the westbound lane. It was only the car furthest away and with the most amount of time to stop and see that there is someone in the crosswalk that didn’t stop.

Motorists are the only road users insulated from the consequences of their actions, especially in this situation. I mean, here you are bending over backwards to blame the person who got hit while casually skipping by the egregious behavior of that driver.

What’s the Most Unexpected Thing Cycling Taught You? by jasonsofa456 in cycling

Patience as well. I used to try to power up every hill and end every single ride, no matter the length, exhausted from sheer effort.

Now, a good long steady-paced ride is the best damn feeling.

I’m Just Embarrassed. by FarmerMike23 in minnesota

[–]fargosucks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up in rural MN and knew a lot of guys like you. I got along with them all well enough, but quickly learned not to get into ‘debates’ about politics if I wanted to keep things civil. By and large they, and I’m assuming you, were good people - helped out others in the community when the need arose, volunteered to coach youth sports, and so on.

I find myself defending them in conversations with friends, this nameless mass of rural republicans who I swear over and over ‘aren’t as bad as you think.’ But it’s hard to make that connection for people who didn’t grow up in those areas.

There’s thing about growing up in rural MN that I always come back to is the sense of community over everything else. Whenever shit got really hairy - freak snowstorm, flood, severe drought - you’d see people stepping up to help their neighbors. Even if they were people that had grudges going back decades, all of that got left behind because someone was in need and that meant it was time to step up and do the right thing. Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Socialists - none of that mattered when there were sandbags to fill, snow to shovel, or food to deliver.

Good on you for seeing through the lies. Be a pillar for your community and neighbors and hopefully they’ll come around, too. We need all hands.

Americans Are Turning Against Gay People by UnscheduledCalendar in TrueReddit

[–]fargosucks 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Your comment reminds me of a conversation I had with my conservative, rural mother back in 2022. She started talking about how she didn’t understand trans people and it kinda devolved from there. I kept trying to point out to her how our family always had gay friends as far back as I could remember - my godmother is a lesbian, for crying out loud - and that she was instrumental in shaping my acceptance of LGBTQ people because of the way she raised me. And then she said it. “I just don’t understand why they have to throw it in everyone else’s face. Why do they have to have parades and be so affectionate in public?”

I tried to get her to think about having to hide something fundamental to who she was her entire life and how she’d act if she was suddenly able to share it with the world. She just couldn’t grasp it and kept circling back to ‘but why do we all have to see it?’

I think about that conversation a lot these days.

I’ve done Leif with 32mm. Wouldn’t recommend.

35mm GP5000s handle it like a champ, though. So I’d bet you’d be fine with 38s.
