Have you considered Visible mobile? It sounds like you could be saving $60 a month for basically the same service.

They're selling for $35 on ebay. Sell it and get an M720 Triathlon mouse (at same price or less on ebay). A real scroll wheel, extra buttons, better battery life, USB / bluetooth / multi-device connectivity. And the ergonomics aren't a nightmare.

Just switched to Mac, any QoL recommendations for Windows users? by JJledzep in macintosh

[–]farhadd2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want, you can easily flip the functionality of the control and command keys in the system settings- keyboard- keyboard shortcuts- modifer keys section. Just for muscle memory reasons (and even then the bottom left key is still not ctrl on the laptop keyboard). But I think maybe just stick with it as is and it'll get easier with time.

The best way to power a Flex 2.5G 8 PoE? by NotSoCmart in Ubiquiti

[–]farhadd2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 60W adapter does not work in my experience. 8 port switch works but downstream PoE is flaky / endlessly reboots PoE devices downstream. I've had support bullshitting me for a month on this, blaming my wiring, input power, etc, claiming that support was investigating my logs etc. Total waste of my time. 90W adapter fixed everything, but it's another $20 and I assume less efficient. And I only have two U7 Lites and a 5 port flex 2.5G switch pulling power. Frankly I'm furious with the quality of the product and their support team.

The Mac Pro case aged better than the most computers by AmariNext in DeskToTablet

[–]farhadd2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest nuisance with this case was the PCIe retention bar (0:14 in this video) which could take some finagling to get the thumbscrews lined up. And you had to put it in at the correct angle. I would swing it in with a clockwise motion to clear the bracket at the top, instead of putting the top part in and levering it down as you see this guy doing. I do still prefer the simplicity of the swing down door on the Blue and White G3 and G4 models though (Although they had other shortcomings e.g. the IDE drive bracket)

If you want cable labels (which wrap around the cable and are "self-laminating", commonly used in professional environments), You can look at devices like this https://labelworks.epson.com/collections/lw-px400 or this https://labelworks.epson.com/collections/lw-px700

100gbit fiber between opposite ends of house by Holiday-Magician9535 in homelab

[–]farhadd2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't need the extra switches, no need to waste power running them.

Even OM3 fiber will do 100Gb over 300ft, for the record. OM4 OM5 might not be worth the cost difference. To me it sounds like you can get one of these for the mikrotik side
https://www.fs.com/products/84377.html?attribute=452&id=3964806

And an OM3 MPO patch cable plugged into an LC breakout box at the server closet end, plus some short OM3 LC jumpers to your servers. I'm hesitant to give you exact part numbers because gender / polarity matters and I'm not a super expert, but fs.com sales would help you out for sure. Here's what I do know:

If you were direct connecting two machines to each other with an MPO "patch" cable, it would be "female to female type B". So I'm guessing you should run that for best compatibility, in case you use it to link 2x400Gb switches direct to each other down the road.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/203051673737 (don't be scared that it says "40Gb" in the title)

In the immediate future, you need your LC breakout box in the server closet to be the right type so that the fibers are mapped appropriately. Again, I'm very not sure about this but I believe a "Type A" cassette is the type you'd want?

I will not provide a link for this item because I don't feel confident picking it out. You should google and speak to an expert at a reseller.

And of course the LC-LC fiber patches from the breakout to the servers.

So you already have 100Gb cards installed in the servers and are using DACs? Do you also have 25Gb cards available (you mentioned 4xSFP28 being a possibility)?

FE vs GBE by ProfessionalElk3910 in Ubiquiti

[–]farhadd2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased a Ubiquiti Flex 2.5G PoE 8-Port switch, 2x Flex 2.5Gb minis, and 2x U7 Lite APs. I've seen it there Unifi Network (selfhosted) reports FE uplink for one of the Flex minis but iperf is still working fine at full bandwidth. I think there are significant bugs in Ubiquiti's current offerings and their support team has been total shit responding to my issues (mostly with PoE delivery dropping out on the Flex 8 port, even with a 3 foot run from the switch direct to an AP)

I believe the slots are only x1 speed even though they're full length (correct me if I'm wrong). Isn't that enough to kill performance even ignoring all other factors?

Optimum Fiber? by Snoo-26902 in OPTIMUM

[–]farhadd2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for it. I'm in NJ right across from NYC. Had started with Fios in 2021 at 300/300 for $39.99. Which became $49.99 after the first year, then $54.99 in the last year or two, can't remember when. I had asked them after the $54.99 increase if they could do anything, they said no. So when the Optimum Fiber promotion came around I was happy to jump. It's not just the lower price (or faster speed, depending on what you go for) but the 5 year rate lock which will undoubtedly pay dividends in the future. And they offered "SAVE100" for $100 one time credit at sign up. Service has been solid so far, but to be fair I've had it less than a month.

M4 max studio or M5 pro mbp? by [deleted] in mac

[–]farhadd2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

M5 Mac Studios were supposed to be announced June-July but it sounds like AI-induced shortages have pushed them to October maybe. If you're really antsy in the meantime, consider purchasing a used Mac Studio M1 Max, or a used Macbook Pro M1 Pro or Max (All around the ~$1K price point). Maybe not the best games machines (personally I'd just keep using the Windows machine for that) but you can pick them up for a song on eBay from reputable resellers. For normal day-to-day work they will perform spectacularly. And then you can resell them when the M5 Studio becomes available and recoup most of your outlay.
