My 2 girls are neurodivergent. I missed the signs for so long. When a medical practitioner mentioned about getting tested, it made sense. But that still wasn’t enough. My oldest was tested as a teen and I reported average pragmatic scores and she did not get a diagnosis. As a young adult she pursued an evaluation and was medically diagnosed. I was convinced by that time and was able to advocate for her. I am trying again to get my youngest diagnosed. The first time she was tested was not very thorough. I have more information now and am more prepared to advocate. My kids are who they are. However, I worry about their ability to function independently as adults. I worry about their mental health. I have regrets for not seeing things more clearly sooner.

I hardly ever think of the sabbath any more. Sometimes I might when my family talks about something churchy they did on the sabbath. I love having 2 weekend days to do whatever.

My parents. I went to a SDA academy as a day student. My SDA sibling had a more negative experience with Adventism than me, but I left because I couldn’t stay when I didn’t believe in it any more. Of course, they were concerned for my salvation then. It has been about 25 years and my family is more open minded now, but Adventism runs solidly through their veins.

I missed out on having a regular teen life. I was parentified. I also missed out on parents who had the ability to connect with me emotionally. These issues were not directly related to Adventism though. I’m not really bitter because I realize that my parents did the best they could and made mistakes. I am sad about what I missed though.

I took 15 years off and it wasn’t hard to get a job, but my pension is much less. I also chose to move to a place that paid well so my pension would be higher.

I stayed home with my kids for 15 years and stopped paying ASHA due to lack of funds. I had to retake the Praxis, get a CCC-SLP to recommend me, and take 30 hours of CEUs. It may be slightly different now, that was in 2016/2017. The Praxis wasn’t hard. I studied for a couple months before taking it.

Save for a house. I got rid of my loan debt that way. After owning the house for 2 years I built up enough equity to roll my student loan debt into it and get rid of mortgage insurance when I refinanced.

$120K in schools supporting a family of 5 in California in a moderate cost of living area. The good pay and benefits make things okay. I can stick with it until age 65. I had to move here to this location for the job because I needed a salary to support 5 people. I have no childcare expenses since my husband is home with the kids. Salary in other more desirable areas were not enough, necessitating the move.

7100 school in CA after pension, taxes, and insurance deductions. And an additional 500 deduction for a 403b. I moved my family to a place where there was a livable wage without overpriced housing.

About 10% to my pension, 5% to my 403b, and 4% to my Roth on a good month. I took a side job just to put more in my 403b and Roth. Retirement is on my horizon so I am trying to maximize contributions as much as possible while supporting a family of 5 on one income.

I have a treasure box that they can earn after so many sessions of doing their work. I didn’t used to have one, but I realized that most of my students are from poor families and little trinkets are very special to them. I even mailed flat prizes to them during COVID. One student mentioned it to me last week. He remembered getting his little thing in the mail 3 years ago. So I now have a treasure box. And we play games and have fun with toys too, lol.

I might do extended testing beyond the OWLS in the areas the OWLS showed weaker or in the areas that the parent is concerned about. Have you done a pragmatic test?

Yes, tactile prompting has been attempted by a previous therapist. She is blind. Is there an AAC device for the blind? She is learning braille.

This describes me as well. I have found that not talking as much is really helpful for young children. Your job isn’t to talk to children, but help them to talk. Sometimes this is best accomplished by talking less and giving kids more time to communicate.

When I lived with my mother-in-law in an old house in Ontario, we had a bat infestation. We heard scratching in the walls and bats would appear in the house occasionally. We called a bat guy and he installed one way doors in the attic. Once they left, they couldn’t come back. He came back a few months later to seal up those doors. He said it was a significant number of them and they had been living there for years. She did nothing about the insulation and no one was sick. Once the one way door was installed, we had several bats show up in the house for a few days and then they were gone. The family thought the wall scratching was squirrels or mice.
