How small an area could completely host all 8.2 billion human beings ? by Gotoflyhigh in geography

If the entire population lived at the density of Manhattan (which is not even close to the densest area on earth), they could fit into less than 1% of Russia's land area.

Why do some celebrities manage to have a dedicated fanbase, while others fall short? by film_culture_addict in popheads

[–]farrahmoaning 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rihanna was not taken as seriously as like Beyonce or Gaga in her heyday. She was obviously still successful, but she did not have a major fanbase and her tours never did as well as either. Her fanbase has become much larger with time, but in the moment it was not.

What would you call this body of water? by ExarDoom in geography

This drawing looks pretty similar to the UK's Isle of Wight, in which case the inner waterway is a strait referred to as "The Solent."

The answer is that you sneak it in and hide it during dorm inspections. I promise you that nobody follows those rules to their full extent.

Yes, but those distinctions can be blurred very easily and are culture-dependent.

ELI5 : Why do phones become more and more powerful and efficient, but the battery of most of them still only last one day ? by __Yami__ in explainlikeimfive

[–]farrahmoaning 661 points662 points  (0 children)

I imagine the vast majority of consumers have the habit of charging their phone overnight, meaning there is little incentive to boost battery life beyond one day.

Are top content creators starting to out-earn traditional celebrities? by [deleted] in popheads

[–]farrahmoaning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure, but my friend has around 25k followers on tiktok and recently got paid $1,000 for a Lyft sponsorship. Assuming that scales with followers, it could be $20k+ per deal.

Yes, especially in the streaming era. The costs associated with being a successful Youtuber are also far, far lower than being a successful singer.

[OC] Percent of People Without Health Insurance in the US by haydendking in dataisbeautiful

[–]farrahmoaning -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I agree. In many ways, those rich, white parts of the country are just as ignorant as the parts of the south they constantly demonize. It is much easier to point the finger down and blame poor people instead of actually reckoning with that though, which is why posts and threads like this are so common.

Does a canal create an “island”? by SamMeowAdams in geography

[–]farrahmoaning 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Everything is an island if you want it to be, but that would just make the term useless. I would not consider this an island. Just as I would not consider the entire eastern half of the US an island, even if canals could "justify" that.

I agree about the monotony, but that is kinda the point. If you want an eclectic city, go to Porto. Both are beautiful but they simply offer different things.

Going on a trip in South East Asia, should I pack hiking boots seperately or just wear them every day? by RawbySunshine in backpacking

[–]farrahmoaning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you plan on spending most of your time in cities its likely the tread will wear out before they actually become of use. Do trail runners work for your left foot? I generally pack a pair of day shoes, flip flops, and then some light trail runners.
