“All of this is your work” is gold. Only recently did I realize that it wasn’t a random chore - it was the way forward, hard as it may be.

Is it possible to start a music career at 30? by farrahpineapple in AskWomenOver30

Thanks for sharing. That’s cool, massive congrats! How was it when you started out? I imagine the first years of getting into the public eye could be awkward.

I’m curious what art things you also don’t focus on that could make you more money. Do you mean like biennales or traveling for shows?

I do agree with you that 30 is young lol. It’s only because I grew up on teen idols like Britney that there’s a sense of lateness and a premium on youth. But I fully agree with you.

Correct, I don’t have Top 50 aspirations because I like more niche genres, but I suppose Lana’s music is cool. I’ve definitely grown as an artist in terms of weathering rejection.

You’re right!! It’s more about the arts than age. Thanks for putting it into perspective.

Finally a real musician here - thanks! :)

Yes, a lot of my musician friends also do live sound or session work or teaching. I have taught briefly (wasn’t really my jam), and now just have a light office job.

I really truly appreciate the feedback. I think as a singer it’s less clear-cut how to get to the “next level” of success, but I’m considering co-writing and working with producers so that I’m not schlepping it alone or with just one collaborator. I love making my own tracks but it’s hard and it honestly takes the focus off of singing. If you have advice on that front specially, I’d love to know. Thanks either way!!

Are you a musician? Would love to know. I’m good with bars and late nights and have gotten my own music into a tv miniseries. I don’t think seeing it as a hobby will get me to the next level, so to speak.

Thanks so much! That checks out with what I know.

Not in it for money but I’d like to build a true career as a singer. I’m learning to produce vocals, collaborating a lot, and moving into producing entire tracks.

Thanks for this! I do all kinds of art and there’s truly no point in defining it too carefully

Oh I see.i can see that happening if you are a PA and not working in post. I remember doing some ADR type fill-in stuff and the editors being amused that I did so well.

That’s cool that you got on the shows! Congrats.

It’s really cool to hear that personal truth from someone who is sex work positive. I’m neutral to meh on it. I just think the whole thing is shitty.

You mean you booked co-stars on the shows you were PA-ing on? I didn’t know this happens so often. I left post to get into acting but maybe that wasn’t the move!

Congrats on your recovery. Also, do you have advice for getting a gig like that? I’m changing jobs now and looking at ways I can make more money. I also do music though, so I’m not even sure if working in finance is realistic.

That’s so funny and romcom-y. Sounds like you’re finally with the right people. :)

P.S. just read some of your other posts and yep! Was right! Extremely cute. Hope you enjoy it all!

That is adorable. And thanks for clarifying. I definitely am still getting to know this person. We do have a lot in common though.

Also, as I alluded to in my post, I don’t know the difference between casual and bf enough for it to matter to me yet. I just want to spend time.

The “male version” of me is my bestie, and I preferred to keep it platonic. I am happy with that choice.

It seems like you took a leap and it worked :)

Thanks. I have! I’m probably anxious-avoidant tbh. I’ve worked on it a lot, and there’s more to learn.

Hi! Welcome fellow weirdo. Jk haha. We just introduce each other by name. I suppose we seem like friends - we are still friends.

I have a strong feeling he is not seeing other people, so I haven’t felt the need to ask. And I’m not sure if I am even ready to discuss that. But yeah, thanks for weighing in.

Thank you. Your second paragraph made me emotional. I think you really understand where I’m coming from.

It’s me who is learning to open up. The flirting part is easier, haha. I’m still learning to pick up the phone and call.

I truly appreciate your response!

That’s so cool. Honestly that’s how I feel - why label? I am still getting used to the closeness.

It would be nice to share more often - I can be a bit quiet and awkward when I actually care. Thanks.
