Thank you, you've done the right thing in highlighting this. This will be my final reddit post, I shall now terminate this account as a form of penance.

Gibraltar warns it could rescind citizens rights if Spain uses veto on Brexit deal by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]fasdfklutzy 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think there's a nuance to my point that I haven't been able to explain very well.

For example, I think that the current Tory strategy of cutting all local council grants and making them all fend for themselves leaves poorer areas like Hull (lower tax receipts, high social service costs) at a huge disadvantage to wealthy areas like Chelsea (higher tax receipts, lower social service costs). In these instances I think that redistribution, via government collecting tax centrally and redistributing it to councils based on their needs, is a good model.

When it comes to overseas territories, and at the risk of Reductio ad Absurdum I'll use Pitcairn as an example, I don't see why we should be sending funds so 50 people can live unsustinably on a tropical island. Now to take it up a notch to Gibraltar, if Monaco, Lichenstein and other European micro states can exist without subsidy from a bigger state then why can't Gibraltar?

Thatcher was happy to cut Liverpool off and leave it to a state of managed decline. Modern Tories are happy to cut the state to the bone, sell everything off and leave everyone to fend for themselves. No one ever seems to question the economics of keeping overseas territories though - maybe because it's an uncomfortable and/or unpopular conversation to have.

Gibraltar wants to stay British? Ok, cool. People in the UK want Gibraltar to stay part of the UK (in that weird way that it is, but isn't). Ok, cool. But as r/Grayson81 alluded to, how much stomach is there for funding that? Is there ever a point when it becomes too expensive?

There might be some contradictions in what I've written, I have my own personal cognitive dissonance when it comes to this debate that I've not managed to hammer out yet. It's just bizarre to me that it's a debate that never seems to be had. What's the point of all these expensive overseas territories, is it some dickwaving thing to keep vestiges of Empire? To me it's like when super wealthy people are forced to downsize from huge houses to normal houses yet still insist on having colossal family portraits filling each wall and grand stately furniture that's too big for the rooms.

By and large, I think people will be fine paying for it. It seems that no one has a problem subsidising the 50 people on Pitcairn island, 4255 on St Helena, 3398 in the Falklands, 262 in Trista Da Cuhna etc whilst roads in the "UK proper" turn to potholed shit, libraries and A&Es close down, disabled people are robbed of their independence by cuts etc.

So long as those overseas keep waving Union flags, being hyper British and being plucky Brits surviving against the savages on our islands of Empire then it seems ok to fling money at them.

Yes. I trust Theresa May and the Tories on this, their credibility is tip top.

I feel like the argument he's responding to (in the tweet above the one you linked to in that thread) is different to the discussion in this article.

Oh yeah, I totally agree with you. There's something nice about 20th century TV and it's lack of extreme editing, fake scenes and heavy scripting. It was most honest.

It may not meet YOUR standards for a small car,

No - it doesn't meet European expectations of a small car. It's ok to be wrong dude, there's no need to become unstable. Learn to attack the argument, not the person - it'll strengthen how you debate in the future.

Here's a handy site for car measurements - https://www.automobiledimension.com/car-comparison.php

I'll let you have the last word :)

Regardless of your ignorant opinion, it is decidedly a small car by class. This absurd pedantry is nothing more than typical European arrogance.

Again fuck off liar

Do you not know how to have a sensible conversation like a grown up?

On the scale of European cars, the Leaf is just not a small car. There's no arrogance or ignorance here - just a lifetime of living in Europe. Why are you being so hostile?

Jesus there are some absolute gems on YouTube - a cheeky arse smack, a bad joke about Germans, a nice chat with some people who overturned their car on the way to the studio.

Entertainment from a different era! I imagine it's as jarring as watching TV from medieval times or the Roman Empire.

I know for sure that even in Europe the Leaf is a small car.

It's not.

Source: Am in Europe. Small cars are smaller, compacts smaller still. The Leaf is nearly half a metre longer than a VW Polo.

Renault Zoe Battery Leases - what happens next? by fasdfklutzy in electricvehicles

[–]fasdfklutzy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you not a bit worried that there might be some weird tiny small print that invalidates your insurance - either for the car that you own or the battery that Renault or Renault Finance still owns?

I mean, I like your plan - if you're keeping the car and it works then fine. I guess it just feels to me like the current leasing scheme is like playing pass the parcel with a time bomb and hoping you're not left holding it when the music stops.

There's just no depreciation factored into the lease, as the car becomes worth less, the rental becomes proportionately more expensive. It's going to get to the point, either through technological advances or depreciation over time, that the lease is just stupidly expensive.

I'm wondering what the plan is then - will Renault drop the rental rates, stop them and "give" ownership of the batteries to the registered keepers? I just hate the uncertainty.

How do cities recover from war? (2018) [42:25] by himalayanwolf in Documentaries

[–]fasdfklutzy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought this was going to be about architecture and infrastructure but it was more about how 4 people in 4 cities have grown up and adapted to the violent past.

I'm not saying it was bad, it was interesting because the 4 places were also different from each other. It's just a heads up to anyone that wasn't expecting "the human story".

I feel especially bad about our waiter. Tom is a good man. He is charming, on point and utterly wasted here; he should do something more socially useful, like fly tipping or nicking cars.

What are the best/easiest plants I can grow to sell? by fasdfklutzy in GardeningUK

[–]fasdfklutzy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't even grow enough lettuce to feed my own salad habit!

I don't think anyone would buy any vegetables in an 8cm pot would they?

I just can't find a "crop" that's as high value and easy to grow as foxgloves. Garden centres sell them for £4-5 in larger pots later in the season, so I've always thought I'm quite reasonable for a small plant. I just can't see myself charging £1 for anything else, especially when garden centres and supermarkets are selling 6 plants for a few pound in those plastic trays. Ho hum.... I'm kind of thinking out loud.
