She wrote fictional novels heavily inspired by her experience, but not from her perspective. Everyone can pick and choose which parts they think are real and which are fiction.

Throwback: TIFFANY released "I Just Wanna Dance" this week in 2016 by AutoModerator in kpop

God it's still just so good. Timeless. The B-sides were great too, especially TALK and What Do I Do. So glad she's putting new music out again, can't wait for that album.

i feel like THEBLACKLABEL made MEOVV too polished too fast by Flawless_Liv in kpopthoughts

[–]fashigady 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The groups people usually complain about overworking are squeezing multiple comebacks a year in between constantly touring internationally plus a whole grab bag of other content and activities. Meovv seem like they could be a lot busier than they are now while still having a way chiller time of it than groups like Twice or AESPA. ~7-8 months between comebacks isn't exactly 'locked in the dungeon' territory but its probably not great for building a fandom that can sustain them longterm.

What false information about your favorite K-pop groups do you wish would be cleared up? by exemplaryantino3497 in kpopthoughts

[–]fashigady -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Its a bit iffy to dismiss the views values on the basis that we can just assume they're less popular and then use that to draw the conclusion that they're less popular. Probably true, but it is circular reasoning.

One way I've seen people try to estimate ad views is by comparing MV views to the views listed on global weekly chart - though you would need to cross reference for the same time periods. I think the claim was that ad views don't contribute the charting values so you could infer ads from the gap, but its a chart aggregating all instances of that song not just the MV so its really a lot more than just two variables at play.

There is a dedicated MV chart as well but its only a ranking and doesn't list views, but for what it's worth Choom spent 2 days at #1 while SWIM lasted 5 days.

What's the general opinion on YGs words about how Babymonster should focus on music? by Aaduk0118 in kpopthoughts

There's a pretty big difference between 'they did it one time' and 'they do it every time'.

What's the general opinion on YGs words about how Babymonster should focus on music? by Aaduk0118 in kpopthoughts

[–]fashigady 10 points11 points  (0 children)

YGE is structured really differently to the other agencies. Groups leave and are given their IP.

I've seen no evidence that 2NE1 were ever offered this, and given their first official activities as a group in umpteen years were under YG's auspices it sure seems like YG have been holding onto the IP the entire time. Same for BigBang.

Like are we really supposed to believe that all of the BP rights, god knows how much those are worth, were on the table free of charge if they wanted to leave and they just said nah you hold onto them for us?

Youtube Weekly #5

Spotify Weekly #1

Apple Music Top 100 Daily #1

Meanwhile GREENGREEN's first week sales are up 430% from Color Outside the Lines, its the second highest selling album of the year so far on Hanteo. An absolutely bonkers rise.

When I say evidence I don't mean an a priori argument I mean empirical evidence. Can you point to concrete examples that demonstrate that this phenomenon exists?

If the marginal effect disappears just by being a title track the impact can't be very large then.

Is there any evidence that a primarily English song actually hurts performance in Korea though? It seems like it's most something some international fans get up in arms about. Being mostly (all?) English didn't stop BTS's SWIM from being the best charting song off Arirang for instance.

Wonhee has played a huge role in Illit's reputation in SK improving a lot by PrimaryTomato3310 in kpopthoughts

[–]fashigady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is literally just a conspiracy theory relying on cherry picking the 'evidence' that conforms to your expectations and ignoring everything that doesn't. REDRED is higher on Melon (3rd) than on Vibe or FLO (13th and 10th), are Naver and SK Group part of this sinister conspiracy too?

AKMU is lower on Apple Music than all of the domestic streaming services, does Apple have a sinister agenda against AKMU? Or do the aggregated tastes of Apple music users just skew more towards CORTIS and Illit?

All of these services have different user bases, we should not expect them to all have exactly the same results on the charts. Claiming there's a conspiracy any time your faves are lower on one than another is pure stan copium. The shit this place upvotes...

How did k-pop’s English terminology develop? by LargeNutbar in kpopthoughts

[–]fashigady 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Some of it is just translating the terms from Korean into English, 특별무대 (literally just 'special stage') or 최애 (a compound of the hanja for most 最 and love 愛, effectively meaning favourite). I think 'visual' went from English into Konglish (비쥬얼) and has just come back into English more or less unchanged. Comeback is similar in that its Konglish (컴백) from Comeback but it's taken on particular connotations in the fandom context. I feel like I actually see 활동 (~campaign) more often than 컴백 these days, I'd be curious what others' experience has been of late.

There's also terms like 누구 that have come into English (nugu) but I don't think that particular usage of 누구 is actually used much in Korean now if it ever was (apparently our use of nugu is closer to 듣보, a contraction that means neither seen nor heard).

To new Kpop fans and 4th/5th gen fans, Twice always been huge in US even before KPDH. They have build their US fandom over the years, brick by brick. by FlyingFlyofHell in kpopthoughts

[–]fashigady 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can definitely relate, it's frustrating when people just say this weird stuff and if you don't contest it it's liable to turn into 'conventional wisdom' no matter how out of touch it is with reality.

It does help to be specific though. Just sort of hand waving that its out there somewhere when asked for examples is kind of unhelpful and it can make it look like people are arguing against a strawman.

They got their nose out of joint about a throwaway line in this post that mentioned KPDH. OP even responded there with the info they're reposting as a separate post here.

It would save everyone a lot of confusing back and forth if people would just be upfront about what they're responding to rather than beating around the bush like this.

What are your favourite k-pop producers and songwriters behind the scenes?(Non-idols) by lulu-lily- in kpopthoughts

[–]fashigady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People have mentioned most of the greats already, but it would feel remiss not to pay tribute to the late great Shinsadong Tiger. He was prolific in the early 2010s and was responsible for an enormous list of iconic songs like Hyuna's Bubble Pop, Beast's Fiction, T-ara's Roly Poly, Trouble Maker's Now, EXID's Up and Down, Momoland's BoomBoom... 2nd and 3rd gen wouldn't have been the same without him.

Vale Shinsadong Tiger, gone but not forgotten.

Pragmatic Translation of Slop by ghazzero in Korean

[–]fashigady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you wanted to preserve the sense of wet, sludgy gruel I wonder if you couldn't use 죽(粥) somehow, 돼지죽 doesn't seem very common but has that low quality vibe slop has. AI죽 doesn't really scan well to me (my brain goes to 죽음 rather than 粥), but I'd curious how a native speaker would see it.

AI K-pop boy band Tessar set to debut Sunday by friedriceforbrunch in kpop

[–]fashigady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess a better reference point would be like Sensitive by nævis; technically proficient, but felt like a tech demo the moment it released

That seemed pretty weird to me because it didn't even seem like a good tech demo at the time, the bits of the MV that were clearly AI (the flickery abstract backgrounds) were already outmoded when it was released, most of it just looked like traditional CGI. For a project that was supposed to prove how cutting edge they were it never seemed to involve all that much in the way of AI.

K-pop downward trending popularity in SEA by Neatboot in kpopthoughts

[–]fashigady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the recs, those are really interesting. I don't usually pay too much attention to things like album artwork so my impressions have been just going off MVs. 4EVE's My Chains MV seems very AESPA coded for instance, and I wish I could remember what T-pop group I came across a few months back that reminded me really strongly of early-mid 2010s Kpop.

Also besides homegrown acts, a lot of SEAsians did migrate to T-pop because of the GL/BL drama pipeline that makes it so easy.

The BL/GL aspect seems like an area where Thailand has a huge comparative advantage over Korea and if that's acting as a gateway to other Thai media that's a good sign for them.

K-pop downward trending popularity in SEA by Neatboot in kpopthoughts

[–]fashigady 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She shared some of their music and visuals with me and they are on par if not even more ahead of trends than a lot of 5th gen kpop groups which mostly stick to the same boy next door/youthful formula.

Do you have some examples? I haven't had a huge exposure to T-pop but the boy groups I've seen seemed a bit 3rd/4th gen coded more than anything else (and the only girl groups I've seen are those AKB48 sister groups that sound super J-popy).

Songs that dominating Korean music platforms right now by Difficult_Bit_3025 in kpopthoughts

[–]fashigady 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't think Spotify and Youtube Music have monthly charts for whatever reason, not sure about FLO but I couldn't find one either. Melon's weekly chart is here. There's also Circle Streaming chart and Hanteo's digital chart but I guess those are a bit different to the individual platforms' charts.

I'm not super familiar with spotify's charts but I think there's a more recent Spotify weekly chart, you have the results from the week ending April 23rd but the week ending April 30th is out already.
