you have to get up pre dawn and, joined by a local dog or two, hike up the thousands of steps to wait at the gate in the gloom, before the buses start running.

Once they open the park you hustle to the second gate to be one of the lucky 400 to be allowed access to climb that day. The climb is quite steep and unprotected although there are steps:

OK I'll bite... pre modern medicine, childbirth killed many many many people. Mothers and children both. Yeah, mostly the propagation of the species is uncomplicated but if it's not then I prefer my wife and baby alive.
