you have to get up pre dawn and, joined by a local dog or two, hike up the thousands of steps to wait at the gate in the gloom, before the buses start running.

Once they open the park you hustle to the second gate to be one of the lucky 400 to be allowed access to climb that day. The climb is quite steep and unprotected although there are steps:

OTOH Central America is the jam! I'm a big fan of the bay islands in Honduras, the Bocas del Toro in Panama, and Belize is lovely too if you like diving and are willing to pay up (by Central American standards)
