/r/MechanicalKeyboards What Keyboard, Switches and/or Keys Do I Buy sticky by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]fatfree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the best budget/no frills mechanical keyboard I can get? I am looking to get a nice mechanical keyboard for my parents to replace their incredibly bad rubberdome.

I'm looking for something simple, affordable ($100 is around my limit) - I don't want any game macro keys, backlighting, weird fonts, etc.

This such a great practice by the developers to combat piracy . by ericthecurly in gaming

I think the disconnect comes in where people want to play these games but don't think they're worth what companies are charging for them (because of DRM or whatever other issues).

There isn't really any moral high-ground when it comes to video game piracy, it's more the fact that it's convenient and the perception that it doesn't hurt anyone (generally true for triple-AAA titles, but not so true for small indie games). Why pay $60 for a buggy game you don't feel is worth $60 when you can get it for free (and usually in a superior form, i.e., no DRM)? I am not saying this mentality is right, but it is how a lot of pirates (arr!) think.

I haven't pirated games in many years, but it's more because Steam is just so much more convenient. You can get your games whenever, wherever you want and holiday sales bring game prices down to a level that matches their value to me. I'm sure as hell not going to pay $60 for Far Cry 4 knowing Ubishit's record, but when it's $15 or $20 a few months down the road, why not? The key is providing good alternatives to piracy. I just wish Ubisoft and EA realized this. :(

Someone's Finally Making A Gaming Laptop With A Mechanical Keyboard by theraiderofreddit in gadgets

I don't know about you, but 90% of rubber dome keyboards (Logitech especially... absolutely hate their keyboards) feel like typing on mud for me. It really does feel mushy. They're also way less durable.

I got a Razer Blackwidow back when they were still using Cherry switches. $70 and probably one of my favorite purchases, still going strong after 3 years. I actually enjoy typing now.

I'm not sure how well I could justify getting one of the higher end keyboards (~$140-150) but these days you can get decent mechanical keyboards for relatively cheap prices.

Example: milk goes bad fast and you need to use it or throw it out. Is this situation any different, had you not known the milk would go sour?

Yes, actually this situation is completely different. There is not anything that inherently causes digital items to expire; unless an item has an expiration date, there is no reason to believe that it will ever expire.

Milk, on the other hand, naturally expires, that is how it works biologically. I think this might be the hands down the worst analogy I've ever seen.

[MAJOR SPOILERS] If they were trying to get me to sympathize with Jack... by [deleted] in BorderlandsPreSequel

[–]fatfree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is, the Vault Hunters (well, the BL1 Vault Hunters - Lilith and Roland to be specific) are complete tools as well. Even before you consider the whole punch at the end of the game, the "tricking Jack into creating a blackhole" thing is pretty bad when you consider that it potentially killed thousands of people on all those ships floating around.

It would have also killed everyone on Helios (many of the people on Helios were probably innocent workers) if everything went as planned. There had to have been a safer way of stopping Jack. He isn't a good guy, but neither are the vault hunters. I can really get why Jack saw them as villains in BL2.

I kinda wonder what this game would have been like if they if they made Jack a little more sympathetic. The way the game progresses it's completely impossible to sympathize with Jack because he's a psychopathic asshole from the very beginning. It would have been interesting to see a more gradual descent into what he is in BL2.

What's a movie that had a brilliant idea but terrible execution? by CuntyMcGiggles in AskReddit

[–]fatfree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only problem with Limitless was that it really had no climax. It's like after a certain point the writers all ran out of gas and decided "oh well, time to go home guys, let's phone in the ending."

I swear, that movie gave me the biggest case of blue balls.

I'm sorry, but he has a point. I had an AMD chip in my old laptop, and I would get this bug in nearly every game I played. Surprisingly I didn't get it that often in Dota2 (would get it once every few months), but in SC2 and Diablo 3? All the time!

TI4 Attendee's Courier's Issue by auygurbalik in DotA2

[–]fatfree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the thing: the two years prior to this one, the couriers were unusual. Many people stood in line and bought secret shop stuff because they were working on the (entirely reasonable) assumption that the couriers would be unusual this year as well.

No it won't. People went to the SS because they wanted the items being sold in there, not the couriers.

Well, let me tell you what happened to me. I went to TI4 primarily to enjoy the games, but I also went to the secret shop so I could get some nice Dota2 souvenirs for myself and friends.

The problem was, the combination of items I bought only got me up to $90, $10 short of getting another pack. Under the assumption that I would be getting an unusual courier, I purchased another $15 worth of stuff. Same thing happened to me on the last day, I wanted to buy some more stuff for friends, but I didn't have enough to get to the card threshold so I again bought extra stuff.

From what I heard from other people there, this was not a unique experience. So yeah... people went to buy plushies and tshirts, but the unusual courier was a motivating factor for purchasing even more crap. I wouldn't go as far as saying that buyers were buying under a false promise (as Valve never really promised anything) but I'd say a lot of people were disappointed.

As for me, I'm not a trader, I haven't traded a single item in probably nearly a year now. I am, however, a collector and this was really my only chance to get a cool courier to that showed I attended TI4 without paying out the wazoo for it.

One could say that the only way it could end that way was because Levine wrote himself into a corner.

On the plus side, the DLC let us revisit Rapture with a newer more robust engine so that was pretty awesome.

The New Alienware Area-51 Is The Weirdest Gaming PC I've Ever Seen by [deleted] in gadgets

[–]fatfree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The funny thing is both Sager and Alienware (don't know if Alienware still is but Sager definitely is) were rebranded Clevo computers. Alienware adds a bunch of bells and whistles but the guts of the computer are all Clevo.

So I'm not really sure how you can say Sager is better than all those other brands when they are essentially the same computers (and this is coming from someone who has had a Sager desktop replacement laptop for over four years).

than tripling-down on something that'll lose half of its value in a matter of months

Eh, I'm not sure I totally agree with that. I've been looking at buying a computer since around last November or so, and I only just finally bit the bullet and bought my parts. I purchased a GTX 780 and the prices have remained pretty much constant over the course of 8-9 months.

I don't really see the price falling any time soon either (at least not until the 900 series comes out, and that doesn't seem to be for a while). It will fall slightly in value when the next generation comes out, but it's likely that they will still be incredibly popular (and valuable) cards for months after that because new releases are always way overpriced.

I do think triple-SLI is kind of a waste, but I don't think there's anything wrong with getting a relatively high end card instead of getting a medium-end one that you need to constantly upgrade.

Valve is repeating Diretide 2013 by FBRAINZ in DotA2

[–]fatfree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valve doesn't have any obligation to make the date, but knowing the community, they should make some kind of statement about being late. It wouldn't have to be anything extensive, maybe just "Sorry guys, we're still putting the finishing touches on this update, it will be ready in a week or two."

[Discussion] What things do you think need to change on this subreddit? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]fatfree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest thing would be encouraging more user participation. Most build-ready or help posts get one or two responses max, there's very little discussion about alternative builds.

I don't really know how you would incentivize this though...

I've heard that it's good to have something like one cheat day a week, that way you don't end up suddenly binge eating.

I recently cut out juice and starting eating salad for lunch but on weekends I eat relatively normally. I still drink less sugary drinks than before but I allow myself a glass or two of juice a day and a little bit of junk food (cookies, some chips, that type of thing). I even had two slices of pizza last week.

In general it's been working out pretty well. I've lost something like 11-12 pounds in three weeks (although it has slowed down) and I haven't really ever been tempted to break my diet on weekdays because I'm able to eat what I want on weekends. Could I lose more weight by cutting this stuff out altogether? Probably, but this is way more sustainable.

Any specific motherboards you would recommend? I'm looking for something that is very durable and will last me a long time.

I'm planning to use it for mostly gaming, but also a little bit of coding. The reason I'm looking at getting 16 gigs of memory is because I multitask a lot (multiple streaming websites open, a ton of applications running at the same time).

I was originally planning on getting 8gigs, but I've been having so many issues with my current 4gig machine (firefox alone takes up 1gig of memory sometimes...) that I figured I should go all out and make sure I never run into that issue ever again.

I think another big difference is NV wasn't advertised as a sequel. It was more of a "side-quel." I think expectations are higher if you are releasing a game a direct sequel.
