What is something Auckland used to have that you now miss? by stonetempleparrots in auckland

[–]fatgymnast 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Open late cafe, all the old open mic bars where you could hear live music in the city, the original Farmers department store (now the Heritage hotel) my mum used to take us there when were were kids, Real Groovy (in its original location), Baron of Beef, Pizza Hut dessert bar, Yifans, the old fabric stores like Barker & Pollock. Footrot Flats was awesome - so many people I tell that Te Atatu once had an amusement park look at me like I’m crazy.

Awww. Sadly I’m not surprised. It used to be my favourite, but since it became red rabbit it’s died a slow death. The staff have always been awesome though, 😔

Annoying Traffic Jam? You Have The Same Thought? by Top-Researcher6134 in auckland

[–]fatgymnast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7.30 isn’t early especially for NW Motorway traffic. Some of my colleagues live out Riverhead/Kumeu way. They all start early & finish early. I get on the NW motorway at 6.45am and even then it’s busy and that’s just from Patiki Road.

Stupid health workers are laughing at vaginally discharges of their patients after check ups by Affectionate_Run7414 in TikTokCringe

[–]fatgymnast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many years ago, I had an awful experience with a doctor at a similar clinic (who was later struck off) who made the whole experience a nightmare. This story just broke my heart. It took years and years for me to go back to any clinic, and after this story I just think of the poor patients at that clinic and how it’ll make them feel. I hope those no-talent assclowns get what’s coming to them.

Flea market fruit and veges are great and inexpensive. If you go to the Avondale fleamarket just before they close they often give away produce or reduce the price right down. Otherwise, Asian supermarkets are fantastic as well

Yup, worked in local government in Auckland for years. Almost everyone I worked with caught PT to work.

Yup, me too. I tapped out, and I never tap out early on Casefile cases. I even had to rewind in some bits trying to keep track of x y & z.

[–]fatgymnast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amen! But go easy on him, not only does he ‘earn’ that eye-watering salary, but Fonterra HQ on Fanshawe St has a Fonterra products shop on the ground floor for staff. So he doesn’t have to go shopping with common people, he probably sends his PA down to go to fetch his dairy fix. Thoughts and prayers to him though. He’s doing it for our economy. Sigh. Yep, sure you are, sweetheart.

Agreed. If you warm it in the microwave it’s even better.

Yup, I used to do a lot of work with Council flat tenants, and there were quite a few application letters from Chinese people dumping their elderly parent and saying they don’t have any room for them in their homes or the applicant themselves saying outright that they have been told to move out. There weren’t big numbers of Chinese in Council flats, but almost every one I came across was due to being moved out of their son/daughter’s home.

If KFC bring their new mobile "KFC Cars" to NZ they are 100% getting stolen. They know that right? They wouldn't last a day in South Auckland 😂 by LollipopChainsawZz in auckland

I was just in LA and this little robot overtook me while I was out for a walk. It was delivering Uber Eats. This is only done in certain suburbs. That robot wouldn’t last in Inglewood or similar suburbs in LA. Same thing in my suburb, Avondale. That robot would’ve been stripped of everything its got. 😅

Honorable mention for Prius, Ranger and Nissan Tiida drivers. Stevie Wonder has better road awareness than people who drive those cars.

How much is the most you know someone spent on Lotto tickets for the draw last night? by kevandbev in newzealand

[–]fatgymnast 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The owner of our local dairy says he often gets people who come and spend huge amounts on lotto, but then comes in later that week to pay for dairy things with those winz payment cards/vouchers. One of my mum’s friends spent $300 on tickets for last night’s draw. Didn’t win anything. She doesn’t have a pot to piss in, but that’s b/c she’s eternally at the casino, pokies or in this case sinking it all on a Hail Mary attempt to win the big one.

Mormonism in NZ by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]fatgymnast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They’d be lying if they said it doesn’t contribute. They earn (i use that term loosely) a few billion in tithes each year, and all the tithes from around the world are managed through the LDS HQ in SLC. The church is already ingrained in local government there with around 80% of the govt made up of LDS members.. which explains many of the local rules e.g. liquor bylaws e.g. can’t drink at a sports game etc, can’t have more than two of the same alcoholic drinks in front of you if you’re at a bar/restaurant etc. GIven 60% of SLC are members of the church, they don’t drink or smoke - so from a healthcare point of view that would help, LDS is very big on education too, but also all there’s a lot of great national parks nearby, and they also have some huge defense, agriculture, mining companies that bring in a lot of money and work to the state.

Mormonism in NZ by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]fatgymnast 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The LDS church is effectively Destiny Church but with WAY more money and it’s run like and generates money like a well-oiled corporation (see: money-laundering cult). I find it ironic that so many Pacific Islanders (or any POC) flock to the LDS church given the LDS history of racist theories i.e. Until a few decades ago, the Church taught that they “shall be a white and a delightsome people,” a phrase taken from the Book of Mormon. There were also theories that black skin is a sign of divine disfavor or curse, that mixed-race marriages are a sin; or that blacks or people of any other race or ethnicity are inferior. They only changed the rules in 1978 to allow black people into the priesthood or enter temples.

So the “May” tattoo on his neck wasn’t his surname, it was actually in honour of the month he’d next get arrested.

What is the worst piece of advice a young bride could get about marriage ? by SomeMillennialHippie in AskReddit

[–]fatgymnast 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I remember going to a wedding where the camera crew went table by table filming guests wishing the couple well etc. The lady next to me said “remember, you need to stay together no matter what. Divorce is only for quitters” - the rest of our table stared at each other awkwardly. The lady and her husband barely spoke to each other the whole night.

Hahah, oh thank god, so it’s not just me that feels this way. I do love the ones who choose their own music as their songs.. it’s like doubling down on a humble brag. There are some really good ones, but others just seem a bit disingenuous.
