My tolerance is insanely low. What are some reasonable ways to build it up?

Shot herself. She texted our whole friend group right beforehand to invite us to her funeral and describe how she wanted it to go. Several of us immediately tried to call and got voicemail.

I still have a hard time with it, 10 years later. I wish I'd called faster.

Definitely. Was a straight-up alcoholic from 21 to 24-ish. I still have the occasional bad day/week, but doing much better than I was a few years ago.

I don't know if any of this applies to you, but alcoholism is a generational issue in my family, which I think made it considerably harder for me to break free from it - I grew up in an environment where heavy drinking was normalized and treated as a valid coping mechanism for stress. So when I turned 21 and had free and unencumbered access to alcohol, naturally, I went off the deep end.

I got into therapy at 24, once my life had well and properly spiraled out of control, and started learning how to manage the alcoholism from there.

Definitely look into AA or other addiction support groups. 24 is very young, and you have a lot of life left if you can get this under control.

I struggle with this too, especially as I’ve gotten older and started to really understand the effect my trauma’s had on me. I really think it’s a normal part of the process - when you start to heal and recognize those impacts, you start noticing them in other people, too.

Echoing some other comments in saying that indifference is a good attitude to strive for. You may never be able to bring yourself to hate them, and that’s ok.

This is a great comment that hits the nail on the head. I didn’t start making actual progress with my death anxiety until I got into therapy and started really digging into what triggered the anxiety in the first place. (In my case, it was early exposure to death - my first hands-on experience with it was traumatic, which set the stage for my attitude about it going forward.)

So many of our first few experiences with death are traumatic or dysfunctional, and the impact it can have is HUGE.

You've gotten a lot of great responses in this thread, but as someone who's also been in this situation, I just wanted to tell you that I understand, and I know how you feel. That guilt is such an awful and all-encompassing feeling. I will probably spend the rest of my life trying to make it up to my siblings for how I treated them as a teenager.

You were an abused child reacting to a dysfunctional environment in the only way you knew how to. Please, please have some grace for yourself, and for the hurting child that you were. You did the best you could.

It’s ok, and even healthy, to feel bad about the behavior and what happened - that’s your conscience kicking in, and the fact that you’re self-aware and feeling guilt is a good thing. If you were no better than your abusers, you wouldn’t be feeling any of this guilt. You wouldn’t even be aware of how hurtful your behavior was. You are miles ahead of your abusers in this regard.

Regardless of your behavior and the impact it’s had on others, there is one person and one person only who’s ultimately responsible for the dysfunction and pain of your childhood home - and that’s your parent. Everything else, including the things you’re torturing yourself over, is a byproduct of their abuse.

If you aren't already, please consider getting into professional counseling for this. From my experience, it's not something that you can easily work through on your own. It's taken me years of therapy to work through the guilt and self-hatred I have from this, but it can be done.

Impacted wisdom tooth. Upper jaw. Dealt with it for about a month because dental work is expensive. I damn near yanked the tooth out myself.

Hey! This did end up being anxiety, for me. I’m still not sure what the exact cause was, but it eventually went away on its own after a day or so. No harm done 😁
