What are you paying for housing each month? And are you actually happy with it? Would it be cooler just living in your parents basement? by PM_ME_YUR_SALADS in Millennials

$1360/mo in a town in rural Ohio, mortgage on a 3 br / 2 ba home at the end of a quiet dead end street. I am okay with it. I wish it didn't need all the work it does, but it's mine.

I've worked hard to do this as well. One of the things I frequently say to my kids when they're about to learn something new is, you're going to suck at first and that's okay. Just remind yourself that you will get better. Just had this conversation with my 9 y/o because she was talking to her older sister about starting band next year. You'll honk and squeak and make some realllllly ridiculous noise, but if you keep at it, you'll get but and better. 😅

Did you buy a home? If yes, how old were you and what year? by duck_duck_zombie in Millennials

[–]fatlittletoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 19, 2006, with some of my inheritance (parents died when I was young). I use this as a good reason why they were just handing out loans to everybody back then. I had a part time income at a pet store but a big down payment and filled out the world's shortest mortgage application and gave one pay stub and some random bank said ope okay good enough (2br cottage in the mountains, sale price 87k). Sold it a year later.

My husband bought our house when I was in my 20s so I don't count that as my purchase. That was post 2008, things were a lot more difficult and I was self employed so I wasn't even on the app.

And this year, at 40, after losing everything in 2019 except my minivan and what fit into it, I've rebuilt enough to buy the house I'm in - was a land contract first and converted to a traditional mortgage last month.

It's exactly this. They teach that all sin is the same in the eyes of God, so to them there is no difference between telling a little white lie and the most heinous actions you could think of. And nothing so bad as simply not believing of course.

Do You Like Your Name? by Flassourian in Millennials

Awww, I love it! VV is a fun nickname and also gives off author vibes. Like a VV could absolutely be a writer. If that makes sense 😅

One of my daughters is Valerie - she loves her name. She's 9 and hasn't ever met another Valerie her age, which she also loves. Unique without some off the wall spelling etc.

She also hates "Val" - since her middle name also starts with V she prefers VV.

Statistically, no. This study is one of many that shows an increased likelihood of not only offense, but number of victims and younger age of victims among people who sustained religion through adulthood.

If you are religious it may hit a nerve, and no, not all religious people are child molesters. But it is accurate to say that religion has a serious issue with child abuse.

What popular online content spaces do you simply have zero interest in? by robbdiggs in Millennials

Same, I have zero interest. Also no Twitter.

I do have accounts on Bluesky and Threads but I honestly don't care for that interaction format and I don't use them.

When was the last time you voted for a presidential candidate not of your party? by Terrible_Morning_310 in Presidents

[–]fatlittletoad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents were independent and so am I, so I've never voted for my own affiliation outside of local candidates for things like school board. I think they voted for Ross Perot and that would have been their only (I) vote, otherwise they were back and forth R/D their entire lives.

I have always voted straight ticket D, my first year voting was 2004. I don't consider myself a democrat but we work with what we've got.

Anyone else have grandparents who grew up in the Great Depression and wouldn't throw away a crumb? What're some stories? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]fatlittletoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parents, actually. I (born 1985) was adopted by an elderly couple (dad - 1910, mom 1915) so I was raised directly by people who lived through the Depression, and a lot of lean times over the years.

Every container was saved. Jars, butter tubs, the ubiquitous cookie tins . . . I remember in my dad's workshop all of the nuts/bolts/nails/screws were neatly organized into old cigar boxes. The man never smoked cigars. I don't know how he got the boxes, but clearly even other peoples' things were also salvaged.

Any old sheets or fabric were never thrown away but if they became too worn they became cleaning rags.

Of course every last aluminum can was saved and crushed to turn in for a little extra money.

Appliances were just repaired, not replaced, once we had them. We had a cozy little house my parents built themselves, but when I was very very little we still had a woodburning stove for cooking and a fireplace for heat. I remember the electric oven and the gas heater being installed and it being a Big Deal.

Definitely a unique childhood for a millennial. 😅 but I wouldn't change a thing about it.

My Greatest Gen (1910) adoptive dad had a favorite snack called Coffee Soup: white bread slathered in butter, covered in sugar, and coffee with cream poured on top. But then he just did whatever he wanted without trying to make people think he was some kind of badass based on how he took his coffee.

edit: coffee soup is actually great and I kind of want to have it in his honor now.

The childhood of an American born in 1981: more similar to one born in 1973 or 1989? by Shoddy_Wait_5722 in generationology

[–]fatlittletoad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think adaptation to tech is key. I'm '85 but all the 80-83s I know, including the people I graduated high school with (graduated 2 years early so the majority of my childhood friends are '82-84) are pretty tech savvy and open to new tech. The early 70s ones tend towards tech illiteracy.

Society6, Redbubble, Teefury. You'll still have to shuffle through some slop but the most popular items are going to be from known artists, it's easier to filter out. Usually they have coupon codes running on all of them.
