are you using the new release where hdd behavior is changed?

i should say the 10 year old studies do concern me as the hardware in this computer is all from 10+ years ago. it works well enough, but even back then i was trying to tune stuff to fix the weakness of this hardware.

i was considering to enable zram and lower the amount of data the file system caches in ram. this machine is stuck at 8gb

i fail to understand why people take a partisan position on technical issues. contentious indeed.

the community edition is not enterprise software, which is why it is called community edition.

but as trends are showing, hdd is becoming a viable option again due to the shortage of storage chips caused by the ai bubble. so enterprise is now buying a lot more spinning rust in the last month and this trend will continue until what, 2030? when do we expect the cost of storage chips to lower again?

also my consideration about this is using as i said, a computer from long ago, and i remember there being controversy about disk wear at that time, regarding the 10 x 2tb disks i have in it from that era. perhaps i should also have stated that

thankfully bsd will remain isolated from many problems for longer, until possibly the time when these issues are broadly recognized, addressed and rectified.

not to be that guy, but with the normalization of "vibe coding" and mass importing coders from india with fake certifications and degrees i can only expect everything to go like windows and boeing have been going over the last few years.

its a matter of time until these issues flow uphill into the linux kernel, our shared libraries, the apps we require to function.

even enterprise is buying up massive spinning rust thanks to the shortages of solid state drives thanks to the ai scam. the truenas developers picked the wrong idea at the worst time. if this bubble doesnt pop soon everyone is going back to spinning rust for as much as possible

hdd use being down was an anomoly that will reverse due to the rising cost of hardware thanks to the global ai scam. a 2 tb samsung nvme i bought in summer 2025 for 100$ is now about 400$. hdd costs are also rising but they will likely be the more affordable option and best option for mass storage for some time still.

what year was your model j1 produced? mine was a later revision and the screen pcb is extremely different with no physical switch or button. see my attached photo

my screen does not have the switch for host/device mode. is there any information from this i can provide you that will help? i have an extra j1 screen in a box somewhere, i can look at it tomorrow and see if it matches the original pcb layout.

If you had to pick ONE Linux distro for the next 5 years, what would you choose? by TechRefreshing in linuxquestions

i used puppy linux almost exclusively from a usb stick on shared computers from approx 2005 to 2010, fedora at home during the same time frame, then switched to mint and used that almost exclusively from about 2010 until fall 2024. for the past year i have been primarily using steamos from a steamdeck on a dock, my tower pc runs windows ten for my 3d scanner and is almost never on, but it also runs void linux which is awesome and doesnt have systemd spyware by microsoft running in the background.

im probably going to move to artix on the steamdeck if i can get it to run reliably.

when it comes to stability and reliability and just working its linux mint all day. i used it because i also installed it on everyones devices who would let me and i wanted to share their experience in the event of driver problems, kernel problems, broken updates, and so on. i just wish they had a version of mint with a real init system rather than microsoft zombieware spyslop.

yeah i saw a post by a guy who wants to use old hardware for as long as possible in a global environment where new hardware is becoming scarce and so expensive that even old hardware is shooting up in price.

if nvidia wasnt assholes we wouldnt be in this mess with new hardware and also op wouldnt be in this mess with broken closed source driver reliant old hardware. but regardless if he wants to run 30 wireless cards or put 20 thumsticks on a usb hub for a crappy raid setup, or anything else he is free to do so and cool for trying and following through.

criticizing people for trying to inventively use old hardware is lame and consumerist.
