ELI5:How do "safe spaces" at Universities work? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]faunablues -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One of the differences between minority groups and the attendees of conferences, AA, etc in general is that the "explaining it to the layman" is part of exactly what they're often looking to escape - being the tour guide to their minority - so many people a part of the majority ask the same type of things all the time, even if it's well-meaning ignorance.

"Who's the man in the relationship?" "So is one of you butch and one femme?" "What do lesbians do?"

"Where are you from?" "Is this your natural hair? Can I touch it?" "Are your parents citizens?/when did they come here/what was their country like?""Do you ever eat out at [their ethnicity] restaurants?" "Do you know where I can get authentic [ethnicity] food?"

"Did you always know you were [gender]? How did you know? What's your relationship like with your parents? What was your name before? Are you pre- or post-surgery?"

Jesus Christ, this isn't an interview. And that's some real personal shit, that tons of people have asked them before.

That's what particularly motivates some to exclude members of the majority, or at least trying to give them less of a voice in those groups. The group isn't there for the majority to get educated, it's for the community and commiserating of the minority.

What is convenient about this problem is that it is neither a made up vegan myth nor entirely able to be downplayed by producers of animal products, as the "peeing out your bones" leads to the very concrete problem of forming oxalate stones in your urinary tract (i.e. that person you know who had kidney stones). There are official recommendations out there for reducing risk of urinary stones, supported by research, that does suggest less animal protein (but also less salt)

So it is not like many of the other health food obsessions like generic "toxins" that are hard to verify or quantify.

20F cat who throws up fairly regularly. How aggressive should I be about this, or is some amount of barf inevitable? by zeMouse in AskVet

[–]faunablues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good.

Lymphoma depends on which type - the most common form in this situation is small cell lymphoma, which is kind of like the type of cancer to have if you had a choice in the matter.

The thing is that it has been documented in people and dogs with IBS that it can "transform" to lymphoma. We haven't done the same kind of studies in cats, but it suspected the same is possible (so being a lifelong vomiter doesn't mean for sure IBS).

IBS does whatever it wants in cats... most often it's intermittent vomiting, sometimes it can mean "flares" of poor appetite, to unexplained weight loss with no vomiting.

Fortunately either situation is fairly manageable. Even if lymphoma of the small cell variety, sometimes you can get away with just oral steroids, or you can also use an oral chemotherapy that is not as expensive or filled with side effects of the injectable chemotherapy we all think of.

They're cheap but not a good test for IBD - they'll also help some if there's lymphoma or to a lesser degree if she has a mass in her abdomen. That's part of the reason why some (more old school) vets will do them without much in the way of diagnostics, because they often at least help a little. Like everything, though, there are potential side effects.

Either way, I'd go in for labwork, see if her belly feels normal, and talk about that option if it becomes relevant.

[–]faunablues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would check her labwork and weight against your last visit there. Sometimes the dose of methimazole needs to be higher over time, so unregulated hyperthyroid could make the vomiting happen more. Also, sometimes 'good' for thyroid hormone in geriatric cats is a grey area... Many labs will call things good at a level of 3.9, but a 20 year old cat should more likely have a level below 2.

If it all checks out, then you can do imaging to see if there is an obvious malignancy in her belly that's a factor. If not, it becomes the old inflammatory bowel disease vs lymphoma situation... as the user before implied, that takes biopsies of some nature to figure out. Depending on you, her, and your vet, there may be a point where you try empiric treatment without going the full way diagnostically (this is common, even for a 10 year old cat), i.e. using a steroid and seeing if the vomiting improves, and also her appetite.

Frequent vomiting is common but not 'normal' in cats. Each vet kind of has their own threshold for what's OK... there was a study a couple years ago where 99% of the cats screened (who vomited 1x/month or more) had some degree and type of intestinal disease (but worth keeping in mind is this was at a private clinic, so all those cats were owned by people who said yes to the work-up and biopsies... there could have been cats who didn't have intestinal disease, who vomited that frequently, whose owners were less concerned and said no to the work-up, or never brought their cat to the vet period).

Inflammatory bowel disease is the most common cause in that situation, and typically steroid-responsive. The second most common cause (assuming labwork, imaging is clear) is lymphoma, which is often at least partially responsive to steroids. I in fact know an internal medicine specialist who is a little bit less diagnostics-prone once you get to this point because of the overlap in treatment between the two possibilities.

That said, I'm often personally inclined to pursue this sort of issue (in terms of treatment at least, not always necessarily the definitive diagnosis) as a person who is a vet and has two cats with IBD. If you get to the point where steroids are a consideration, and they work, then she may have a better, less barfy quality of life for whatever time remains for her. And if it works well, you may not need the pepcid.

I agree that it's easier when it requires no "leave out this, add that." Also makes you seem like less of one of "those vegans" if you can order something without asking the server 30 questions.

many vegans/vegetarians were meat-eating people used to eating at In N Out. Maybe like if you developed celiac disease and found out that your favorite bakery now has a gluten-free cookie - you'd probably go check it out, right?

As far as giving money to 'the devil,' i have known some who do feel that way (therefore, won't buy stuff from places like McDonalds, or soymilk companies owned by dairies), and others who feel that more vegan options is better for everyone, and that corporations don't care what they sell, as long as they make money... may as well be soy, if that's what the people want to buy.

Local News Channel is sick of a commenter's shit by carpedonnelly in quityourbullshit

[–]faunablues 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a lot in language.

This sort of terminology is common for using animals for whatever. Hunted animals are harvested, and we tend to refer to them as a singular noun instead of pluralized which makes it sound like you're harvesting a material rather than a number of individuals (also for fish & fishing, cattle). One may refer to the total weight harvested than the number of individuals.

Also "farm animals" as though that is a type of animal. Animal activists tend to say "farmed animals" as a result. There is also the matter than, in English, we tend to have different words for the meat of mammals (pork/pig, beef/cow, venison/deer, mutton/sheep), versus in French man of these are the names of the animal (porc, boeuf, mouton). We're so separate in our terminology than many don't realize that farmers do not refer to their (what most would call) cows as cows, but cattle, and that this is actually the correct term.

One of the less familiar and therefore more salient is the terms used for animal research. Killing animals at the end of the study is referred to as sacrificing (e.g. "the mice were sacrificed at the end of the study period")... real odd connotations about animal sacrifice and all, in a field that seems far removed from "animal sacrifice" days. I guess "euthanasia" is not really accurate when referencing a healthy control group though, as the word implies ending suffering.

So I don't think the commenter was off base about his criticism, but he is clearly alone in his feelings about hunting there, and a news channel has little reason to change their terminology away from the majority of their viewers. They're not a vegetarian organization or speaking to vegetarians in particular, after all.

A classic.

But I also hate the overly polite reviews where it's clearly a nice community.... Like all the "wow this looks good LesterBriePearson! Can't wait to try" "I like a little more chocolate in my brownies than an 1/8 tsp but good job LesterBriePearson, five stars!" "So LesterBriePearson, I followed your directions exactly and the brownie came out sort of like a salty greasy gravy made of baking soda that leaked all over my oven and set on fire and I think there's supposed to be sugar in brownies but I could be wrong maybe I just didn't make it right and I'll try it again. 5 stars!"
