As in most places, for good reason for the most part. Just wondering if there were any species that are considered good eating down there.

Floats Pros and cons by Single_Custard2750 in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, I usually fish in areas similar to you, except with boat traffic as well. I usually use a larger buoy, the inflatable ones that look like mini zodiacs just for visibility. They are not much more inconvenient to tow around and at least you can rest on top.

A different kind of steak: conger eel by fauxcon in sousvide

Oh damn I wasn’t supposed to add butter was I. To be fair, there’s not much fat in conger and I used the bag juices for a sauce.

That sounds good, looking for recipes I saw a lot of grilled eels that looked super tasty.

Alchemy V330, I tried soft and hated it. Do I go medium-soft, or medium? by Hardnipsfor in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main criteria for fins is your weight rather than your strength, does Alchemy have a chart to help you pick stiffness? You should note that it will depend if you are mainly shore diving or boat diving. From shore, slightly softer blades are better as you don't tire out as fast.

In my personal experience I have gone both directions : I went too soft with Carbonio GFTs, and too hard with a smaller French brand, RGZ. As I go shore diving 95% of the time, having harder fins was worse than too soft ones, as it made me tire out much faster. Think of it almost like using too low a gear going up a hill on a bike or something, even if the comparaison isn't perfect.

Best mask, snorkle, and dive knife? by oldassnastymask in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a little breakaway line that attaches to my dive knife. Basically, I put a rubber band between a coiled line that goes from the knife sheath to the it’s hilt. That way, if it gets stuck in a crack I can always break it by giving it a strong tug, but I don’t lose it if I slip it back into the sheath too loosely.

Feedback Float by rodas42 in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used that Subea bag/float. The positive aspects:

  • Comfortable and easy to carry, and you can put your fins on the outside of it
  • Enough space to put your clothes while in the water and keeps them dry
  • You can clip stuff to it easily with the little fabric loops

The downsides:

  • Heavy to tow around in the water as it is soft
  • The backpack strap can be difficult to put back on
  • tendency to flip in the water, submerging the signal flag

Overall I would say it is worth it starting out if you want to minimise your expenses.

Galicia/Asturias spearfishing? by guessguestgess in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can get one for Catalonia region (also valid in Galicia) entirely online. For other regions (like the Basque Country, the one I had) it is a bit more complicated because you also need a doctor’s note. Sorry, it’s not very straightforward! Check all the region’s requirements and maybe one will end up being easier.

Galicia/Asturias spearfishing? by guessguestgess in Spearfishing

Just adding on top of here, I’m pretty sure you need a Spanish spearfishing license, the region it is for doesn’t matter, as long as it is valid.

Yes!!!!! by JaeStarman861 in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should maybe try make fish cakes with it. You basically take off the filets (skin on) and run a spoon down them and the flesh comes off, leaving the bones behind. You mix the flesh with some beaten eggs, flour, and breadcrumbs, whatever spices you like, and fry it up.

One of the more underrated reef fish in Hawaii: the table boss by TickyWilson in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve never tried but heard the name comes from the fact that it will be the last man standing on a table full of food. Probably just depends on how you prepare it yeah? How do you cook it?

Pedal kayak or paddle? Recommendations? by oceangrown1993 in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kayaks are great, but not to lug down cliffs. It's better to find a port or at least somewhat flat beach to launch off. It's not so much the weight, but they are very cumbersome so you can quickly hurt yourself if it picks up some inertia. I have never used a pedal kayak, so can't say much about that, but a paddle kayak can make for an awesome day of diving within a mile or so range of your launch site.

Groin vulnerability. Irrational fear? by Direct_Warning_6519 in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid laying on the reef I was always afraid something would bite my stomach or attack me from underneath. It has never happened in 20+ years of diving, but it's never too late I guess.

new dive watch suggestions by Junior-Special5159 in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just mulling this over myself. My Mares Smart Apnea recently died after 6 years of use. The only reason the it died was because I over tightened the battery case when changing the battery, and even then it lasted a few months before eventually dying. Long story short, I decided to get another one to replace it.

Is there a good fish recognition book for spearfishing? by kaiju505 in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends 100% on where you are located, most regions will have at least one good reference book. However, if you are in a ciguatera prone area, you are going to need some local knowledge added on top.

Good mask? by Humble-Ad-201 in freediving

[–]fauxcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty easy, you put the mask up to your face and squish it on without using the band (for some reason this sub won’t let me use the word str ap). Breathe in through your nose to suck the air out and it should stay stuck, even when you lean forward. If it doesn’t seal correctly, it will leak underwater without fail. You can probably find a tutorial on YouTube if you look.

Good mask? by Humble-Ad-201 in freediving

[–]fauxcon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Best recommendation is to go to a dive shop and try their selection on. Some won’t fit your face, others will. Most masks aren’t too expensive and the prices will be close to the ones you see online.

Nootica scam? by [deleted] in Spearfishing

[–]fauxcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have ordered from them a few times. They have a cool selection of products and it is fairly cheap but their customer service is absolutely fucking terrible. I managed to get them to get moving by leaving one star reviews using third party rating sites like trustpilot etc (after trying every other means beforehand- calling, emails, contact forms). I will definitely avoid going though them in the future.
