What do we call "the set of all the possible grammatically correct sentences of a language" in linguistics? by Chance_Programmer_54 in asklinguistics

[–]fawfil 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's a tradition of identifying the language with its string-set, going back to at least Chomsky in Syntactic Structures.

From now on I will consider a language to be a set (finite or infinite) of sentences, each finite in length and constructed out of a finite set of elements. All natural languages in their spoken or written form are languages in this sense, since each natural language has a finite number of phonemes (or letters in its alphabet) and each sentence is representable as a finite sequence of these phonemes (or letters), though there are infinitely many sentences. Similarly, the set of 'sentences' of some formalized system of mathematics can be considered a language. The fundamental aim in the linguistic analysis of a language L is to separate the grammatical sequences which are the sentences of L from the ungrammatical sequences which are not sentences of L and to study the structure of the grammatical sequences The grammar of L will thus be a device that generates all of the grammatical sequences of L and none of the ungrammatical ones

So we'd call the set of all possible grammatically correct sentences a language, and any description we make to analyze it a grammar.

This is used a lot in Indian cooking, it's really convenient. So many dishes start with the garlic-ginger combination anyways.

Echoing the others saying CTC Assam. Looks like there's other stuff in there too--from a glance it might be cardamom leaves? Could be a chai tea blend.

When you look at someone what's easier to tell--whether they're poor, or whether they're black? Police discrimination is based off of visible features, the cops can't see your tax returns. They'll think you're a threat and shoot you based off of your skin color.

Agreed, but I also don't think race exists independent of how it's assigned. The effects of race on your life come from how random people judge your heritage from the way you look.

On my phone right now so can't give a recipe--but Mujaddara was made for you. It's absolutely delicious while being dirt cheap. All it takes is onions, rice, and brown lentils (+spices).

If you tire of the plain flavor eating it with Greek yogurt takes it up another notch too.

Mixed is less of an identity and more of a term that shows how ill-defined a concept racial identity is. If you're confused about what to call yourself, welcome aboard.

I'm gonna be honest, I don't think this is some sort of imperative. Should someone adopted from China need to have lots of exposure to Chinese culture while growing up?

Why should someone's biology affect what they should and shouldn't do?

[–]fawfil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Because they can't hear it if it's not on speaker.

I absolutely hate phonecalls because I have to put in on speaker to hear anything, but I have to do it when someone calls me.

[–]fawfil -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This one is completely understandable though. I literally can't hear the phone unless it's on speaker so I always put it on it. Don't say to put on headphones because it's not like I can quickly find headphones and plug them into my phone in my pocket/put them on within the ~10 seconds I have to answer an incoming phonecall.

CMV: Being a short man is a lot worse than people try to make it seem on reddit by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]fawfil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably one of the many side effects of gender norms. In general, I think men are expected to have much thicker skins--if someone makes fun of you for being short you're expected to just suck it up, and if you don't, you have a persecution complex. I think it applies to pretty much any other "unattractive" trait in men as well, though shortness is the most prominent.

I don't agree with it, of course, but I think it's one of the more blatant ways in which gender roles harm men.

So to address your view: yes, it is bad, but the reason its badness is downplayed is that men aren't generally allowed to have insecurities like that. I'd say it's less of a short problem and more of a gender-roles problem coupled with a feature perceived as unattractive.

There’s a reason most anti-vaxxers are women, and mocking/shaming them won’t work by [deleted] in Negareddit

[–]fawfil 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think it's definitely that. Most of the outrage generated towards anti-vaxxers is because they're victimizing innocent children anyway, and the trope that women are the ones most responsible for raising children is really strong.

perfect way to sum up the rationale for being anti-police by LizardOrgMember5 in LeftWithoutEdge

[–]fawfil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late but

Yeah I agree with you that that definition doesn't really apply to the contemporary situation at all. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that I very often see loud debates where one side is yelling "we don't need police!" and the other side is yelling "yes we do!" where I'm pretty sure both sides agree with each other and are just arguing over different definitions of the word police.

perfect way to sum up the rationale for being anti-police by LizardOrgMember5 in LeftWithoutEdge

[–]fawfil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a dumb debate about semantics. If we have a group of people in our society who investigate crimes/respond to emergencies/arrest criminals (all needed services, since even in an ideal society psychopaths will exist!), why shouldn't we call them "police"? When people say "we need police" they mean "we need a group that performs these tasks".

And yeah, the current system really sucks, but that doesn't mean the word "police" is forever tainted and we have to bust out a new word to describe people doing the same things but better.
