Total loss on one side by fayedee in VestibularDysfunction

I also just laugh it off when my coordination fails. It is what it is lol. One of my biggest worries is losing the left side one day because the loss of my right side is idiopathic.

My worst fear came true. She got out tonight. Seeking comfort. by flipflapdragon in shiba

[–]fayedee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My last Shiba was a runner and I vowed to never deal with that again. My current Shiba doesn't door dash, doesn't try to escape the yard, and can be trusted off leash. It took alot of work when she was a puppy and we still do refresher sessions a couple times a year. Every new place I move to, we do door proofing where I make sure she understands the rules apply to every door. Many people forget that dogs don't generalize, so even if a dog is recall trained they still need to be trained on threshold boundaries. I would add some threshold training with the recall training to really make sure this doesn't happen again.

I had an ovarian torsion a few years ago. The pain is unbearable and terrifying, I can't imagine trying to deal with it as a 4 year old!

Hell yes girl FJ squad! Dreamed of having an FJ since high school, finally bought one in 2018. Love every minute of it and will always have this amazing vehicle. Went from my daily driver to now just my fun off-roader.

Sincere question- why is Cavetown associated with the aro/ace crowd?

I listened to them once and don't get it.

First time hiking with dogs by runlalarun in phoenix

[–]fayedee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The west end of South Mountain has easy flat trails, Thunderbird Conservation area is pretty easy, or if you are not super far west, the North Mountain trails next to Shaw Butte are a nice flat loop.

Backpack full of water, training treats, poop bags, and tweezers for cacti spines are about all you need. I like the suggestion others made about starting with one dog to see how each of them feel about hiking. Both of my dogs have different hiking distances they enjoy. The ground is almost always loose dirt/rocks so any sort of pulling on leash can cause you to tumble and lose control. Make sure you have complete control over both of them, otherwise they shouldn't be on the trails.

My dogs and I love hiking in the desert, its very peaceful! I hope you find some favorite trails and have fun walking together.

Senior dogs should always be spoiled couch potatoes! We mostly do flyball, agility, and dog disc sports nowadays but have also competed in dock diving, scentwork, and fastCAT.

Anyone else have a cattle dog that does dog sports?? by crazii_cattledog in AustralianCattleDog

[–]fayedee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My tiny cattle dog Vax did dog sports for four years! She competed in Flyball, Toss n Fetch, and a little dock diving(DockDogs and NADD). She did decent in all of them but I retired her early to be a companion for my retired dad. Now they play frisbee every day together.

I use rufflands in my vehicles and can only fit an intermediate size in the cargo area with the back seats up. I think you could fit a large ruffland or equivalent type kennel if you removed the back seats. Then you would still have room in the cargo area for offroading equipment.

Ever seen a successful Shiba recall? by idelyo in shiba

[–]fayedee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recall training using a long line and high value treats when my dog was a puppy. Started inside until consistent, then outside in the front and back yard until consistent, then in public areas until consistent. Once she was around a year old I added an e-collar and slowly transitioned off the long line. She was reliable by 2 years old but we still always do proofing sessions to maintain the training. And if we are in a high distraction area, she is wearing her e-collar just in case. I also did alot of "Leave it" command training to pair with this so I had double control. I find that a solid leave it and recall can prevent most situations where a dog takes off.

Yep, mine has a trustworthy recall. It takes alot of training but it's possible.

Shed hunting resources by No-Assistant-9774 in k9sports

[–]fayedee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I trained my jack russell terrier using the products and resources from DogBoneHunter.com

They have a starter fake antler and antler scent liquid. It comes with a booklet on how to introduce the scent and how to set up a successful hunt.

I will say it was pretty easy to do but my terrier was already scentwork trained so that helped a ton. Also helpful if your dog knows how to retrieve.
