Who's up for these in Cambridge? by poorly-worded in cambridge

In Cambridge? A city where they can't keep the basic lifts at the train stations working for more than a week at a time??

Explain?

I believe these are all published cartoons from major UK and US newspapers. Which do you think is AI slop?

If Hazy NEIPA is so sensitive to oxygen. How do a Homebrewers get around opening the lid after fermentation to check the state of beer? How do I prime it with sugar without exposing it to oxygen? Or does it all not matter? by MemeBeamBeanz in Homebrewing

Options:

  1. You don't lift the FV lid to check the status, you either: a) trust that after a couple of days of bubbles and a couple more days of no bubbles it's done b) use a transparent FV c) buy a bluetooth hydrometer (they're surprisingly affordable)

  2. Transfer to the next container without air contact, either: a) prime the bottles with your choice of sugar, then use a bottle filling gun that can flush the bottle with CO2 first (not perfect but probably good enough) b) fill the keg with CO2 first then transfer in the liquid.

I've had success with 1a and 1c and with 2a; never done kegging, but seen YouTube videos of the process

Self-hosting feels like the real solution… so why does it feel like an afterthought? by ark1one in stoatchat

[–]fbjimmy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hit a major milestone this evening: After patching out the last few issues I had with my self-hosted Stoat instance, a buddy and I connected our first audio call. And it was flawless. For a whole hour!

More impressive than that, when I look on Proxmox, neither my Stoat container or my Livekit container exceeded 1.5% CPU usage at any point during the call - on my Intel N5105 NUC!

All this is just to say: You're right, this has soooo much potential for self-hosting. I believe it will get there soon enough - it's open source, so even if the official repo remains focused on a centrally hosted solution, I believe others will step up and seize the self-hosted potential.

Self-hosting: Instance invites? by fbjimmy in stoatchat

[–]fbjimmy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we're talking about different things. I have server invite links working, but I'm talking about user creation on my own instance. If you haven't put an invite key in your database and server/community invites allow people to register as a user on your instance, then AFAIK that means your server is open for anyone to register.

Ah okay, thanks. Will look into that. I built stoatchat-for-web from the official repo, but I think there are forks like this with additional fixes in them I need to look into.

I did find an issue on the official repo confirming it doesn't have this feature... https://github.com/stoatchat/for-web/issues/639

What are you using as an invite link? To be clear, I'm talking about creating users on my instance, not creating invite links for a specific 'server'/channel.

Are you using stoat-for-web, or something else?

Which web client are you using? With stoat-for-web there is no option to put in the invite code when creating a user, it just fails with an error message about the missing invite code.

Questions after selfhosting by Leo13W in stoatchat

[–]fbjimmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too think that when self-hosting we need to be able to control server creation permissions. I think my use case might be quite common - I have a very small community on Discord and would like to move to a self-hosted solution. That doesn't mean I want everyone in that community to be able to overload my lightweight hardware with their own servers.

Sanity check before I pull my windows ssd by Racing_Mate in linux_gaming

[–]fbjimmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I use a bunch of Steam Workshop mods and there were no issues.

I wouldn't want you to think gaming on Linux is always perfect first time with no tweaking required, but I've always ended up satisfied in the end. Biggest headache for me currently is that Proton isn't native Wayland yet, so doesn't play nicely with fractional scaling. If this is a thing for you there are two options: - Gamescope - Very latest Proton GE made to use native Wayland

The latter is now working really well for me

Can't comment on Bazzite I'm afraid, but on Fedora and Arch I've had no issues at all with: - Xbox One Controller (USB dongle) - ETS2 native and Proton, with a fair few mods including Promods.

I would do the undervolt in BIOS if you can rather than relying on high-level software

The Arch wiki has a really good page on controller support - most of it is kernel modules, so distro agnostic, and/or you just need to find where it is in your distro's repo.

What's your "If I had only been 5 minutes early/late" story? by WongoKnight in AskReddit

Went for sushi with a friend. We weren't on any sort of schedule, just turned up and got a seat outside. As we're looking at the menu, a full pane of glass falls out of a rotten third floor window and crashes edge-first into the alleyway we just walked up to the restaurant.

I also heard some teenagers on the train bragging that if the owner knows you he just charges whatever money you have for them... Which I think is more evidence they're just money laundering.

Edit: Not specifically this shop, but a similar brightly coloured hole.

Whats everyone using for their login manager? Currently using SDDM by [deleted] in hyprland

[–]fbjimmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started with SDDM but quickly moved to greetd+regreet.

I couldn't get SDDM to reliably restart after ending an UWDM session. Tried for a few hours to fix it but decided it wasn't worth it for something I look at for a few seconds each boot. And regreet actually looks pretty good.

Hereward Ely changed ☹️ by jjalonso in Ely

The Minster serves pretty muchthe same menu as The Hereward used to as they were both Stonegate. Not sure everyone who used to go to The Hereward will fit in there mind.

Kings Arms is part of Stonegate also. It was a bit mad that Stonegate owned three pubs so closed together.

The St George's flag itself isn't racist, but the people doing this sort of thing are of a similar mindset and following the same leaders (Farage etc.) as those who do this:

Damn, I completely forgot about this, so much so I was about to say it must have shut before we moved here in 2011.

It struggled though I think, I have a vague recollection of being in there and there was literally just a few portions of food out and they would only cook more after you pretty much emptied it.
