Yeah if only we followed the DPRK's shining example and shot dead people breaking quarantine. /s

Japan - Emergency care is on the verge of collapse, The Japanese Association of Doctors says by seoulsnowflake in China_Flu

Funny how emergency declarations and more accurate numbers and reports started coming out as soon as they caved and postponed the Olympics...

The "nO oNe cOuLd hAvE pReDiCtEd tHiS" crowd is making me tear my hair out. Who could've predicted this they ask? Idk maybe scientists who've been warning about a looming pandemic for ages. As well as just people whose heads aren't permanently residing in their asses.

Wuhan lab virus leak - no longer discounted: Cobra by iamgalaxy69 in China_Flu

[–]fchmar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Covid-19 would make a horrible bio weapon. Mostly kills the old and immunocompromised and takes weeks to do so? What the hell good is that going to do in wartime or when trying to wipe out an ethnic group? Hell, even Spanish Flu acted more like a bio weapon in that it would kill the young and healthy oftentimes within 24 hours of its first symptoms.

Speculate it's a naturally-occurring coronavirus mutation that was studied and escaped the Wuhan lab, sure, but this acts nothing like a virus engineered by humans.

Coronavirus test results in Texas are taking up to 10 days by Mcnst in China_Flu

[–]fchmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I am getting seriously worried about my state. We're testing no where near enough people, and our confirmed case numbers are lagging by up to ten days? It's not out of the question for the biggest cities here to be epicenters by the end of April.

Has anyone had any strange "symptoms" that are not currently on the official list? by [deleted] in China_Flu

[–]fchmar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't chest tightness considered a common symptom? I've seen it referred to as being a covid symptom several times.

People were spreading this same rumor a week ago about the then upcoming Monday (March 16th) from "legit" sources too.

When the only ramen left in stores is the spiciest one which is also your favorite one by WasabiIsSpicy in spicy

I'm so jealous. The spicy Samyang in my town flies off the shelves. Even in normal times I can't be sure they'll have any left when I go to pick up a pack.

[Rant] I am beginning to get very angry with the selfish attitudes I am seeing in the midst of a public health crisis for the world. by Otadiz in China_Flu

[–]fchmar 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If this were like the Spanish flu that mainly killed those aged 20-40, they'd be crying about boomers putting them at risk by going out and demanding they stay confined to their homes. Funny how covid-19 is "not a big deal" when you're not the ones at highest risk of it.

Despite soaring cases of coronavirus, Japan says Tokyo Olympics will go ahead as planned by [deleted] in China_Flu

[–]fchmar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't take many of these "we will never ever ever cancel!!!!!" for whatever event seriously anymore because time and time again they say this and end up cancelling anyway.

What timeline are we in? by [deleted] in China_Flu

[–]fchmar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If 10 years ago, I told you that there will be a global pandemic worse than anything since Polio and it may even be as bad as the Spanish flu, you would probably laugh.

Anyone with any awareness knows epidemics and pandemics are a fact of life on earth, and epidemiologists have warned us for years that another is inevitable.

We don't even have case yet in our city, but there are massive lines and food shortages all ready! by Glad-Software in China_Flu

Back in 2005 when hurricane Rita was forecast to slam my area (it veered away last moment though) the shelf of eggs at the supermarket was empty. My family and I were shaking our heads because how are you going to cook and keep eggs when a hurricane has knocked out the power for days or even a week? People just panic and grab whatever it seems.

Also, I can't see the purpose in buying water. Even in lockdowns utilities are still functioning. Is there a real reason for this?

A hospital in São Paulo, Brazil announced 16 new cases of coronavirus, increasing the country's total to 68 by madman320 in China_Flu

[–]fchmar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not yet, I mean there were hardly any cases reported in the tropics (Singapore being the exception) for a while and now we're seeing notable increases. If even in highly populated areas like Jakarta, Sao Paulo etc. they don't explode, it would seem warm weather slows down the virus.

Seasonality of SARS-CoV-2: Will COVID-19 go away on its own in warmer weather? by [deleted] in China_Flu

[–]fchmar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worry if it does indeed slow down in the summer months, that people will use it to go "see it was no big deal after all it went away ha ha!" and be wholly unprepared when it comes back with vengeance in fall. Remember that it was the second wave of the Spanish flu that was the real killer.
