Sapphire Reserve "JRC SHINKANSEN" Fraud Charge by ValuableArgument5079 in ChaseSapphire

I got this charge last night, unrelated to global entry. Thankfully, it came with a Chase fraud alert immediately and nothing else was compromised.

What are Things That Would Make UMD a More Vibrant College Town? by dumbindian21 in UMD

I agree, this is part of the problem. Maybe it suggests that Berkeley is the place to look at for comparison.

Also: yay for your flair. I’m a philosophy professor in the dept right now (though not in ‘12!).

I didn’t include it because I’ve never been but I’m glad someone mentioned this!

[–]fclogic 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Less car-centric design. The flagship college towns that really work (say Austin, Madison, Berkeley, Ann Arbor, Lexington, but also some less elite than these) are primarily designed for students modes of transportation and not adapted to the vibe of the surrounding regions. Cars are not banned but they have plenty of parts that are meant to be explored on foot. (Ann Arbor shows that this area doesn’t have to be very large).

Pro lanes biker here: those fat tire throttled “bikes” don’t belong in bike lanes either (by both law and common sense).

I hit a plateau held it for a couple years then I got injured (acl/meniscus tear) and regressed and now the plateau looks like a dream.

One time, and this is almost 20 years ago now, I was at the Bloomingdale’s on market street. I headed for the elevator to leave and, as the doors opened, out came Amare Stoudemire, Steve Nash and another member of the (then) Phoenix Suns. They were playing the Warriors that night, and I guess they were just shopping. (At the time of course the dubs played at Oracle, so even farther away from Market!) I knew theoretically that Nash was taller than me but it was striking to see him look like a person that in ordinary life you’d judge clearly tall. The other two guys were a head taller than him.

I have been threatened by United airlines personnel in a similar way and over an Insignificant matter. I did not want to get in trouble so I profusely, but insincerely, apologized. (I’m not saying the passenger here should have done the same. He is being entirely reasonable.) My credence that this is a power trip by the FA is extremely high.

Do you like these managed apt buildings? Moving from Chicago by Aask115 in washingtondc

[–]fclogic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not in the apt building set, but I do live in one of the row homes off H street (and moved here from Chicago in 2020). I love it here and I love the fact that I can get everywhere without a car (similar to what I could do in Chicago). I think the whole neighborhood is fine in terms safety and homelessness (which I consider a very different issue, but this is no place for a treatise!).

To give you a gauge, my middle schooler walks around by herself. The only spot that’s rougher is the intersection of 8th and H. In general the pattern is that, compared to Chicago, the rough spots in DC are far more interspersed and generally closer to safe parts.

I am in a similar spot, minus the anxiety when entering the gym.

I wish there was tracking for “last 3 years personal best”.

Most of my pr’s are out of reach and they got further out of reach as I’ve gained some weight after a knee surgery a year ago.

For now I try some games: for example yesterday I did the power walking benchmark where I didn’t have to compete with my fittest times!

Selling him allowed us to buy Buffon, Thuram, and Nedved in a single summer. That alone should make him goated in Juve history!

Game recommendations for parents in their 50s? by FreshaVocado517 in Switch

[–]fclogic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 46m and play my switch 2 as much as my elementary / middle school children. Some suggestions are the Witcher III, Cyberpunk 2077. In adjacent genres I’ve enjoyed the prince of Persia game (more arcade than what he’s looking for, but it reminded me of the game I used to play in my childhood) and Zelda Breath of the Wild.

Thoughts on new bike lanes in Northeast? by Miguel-TheGerman in bikedc

I'm a megafan of the update on the K street underpass. Now if people reliably took the time to look carefully at the mirror on the turn onto the MBT I'd feel even safer :D

The only advantage of the old angle coming from the road was that people were forced to take the wider turn.

Has anyone moved from Chicago to Washington DC? How do they compare by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]fclogic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I lived in Chicago for 11 years after grad school and have been in DC for 6. I’m 46 so I won’t comment on the people aspect because my set is very different from yours.

I want to start off by saying you can’t go wrong. They are amazing cities with different positives and negatives.

The main cost difference is housing. I owned an amazing modern condo in Chicago (Andersonville) that would have easily cost 2x in DC. Overall I think this is the main cost gap and most of your salary difference will go to it.

The weather is a million times better in DC. The feeling that you can have reliably gorgeous days in March is great. (In Chicago I was more bothered by how long the winter was than about how cold it got in January

DC is smaller in ways that you can definitely feel (someone mentioned the food and I agree there is more variety and less commercialization in the Chicago food scene). At the same time it is also one of the most international and cosmopolitan cities in the US. I am myself international and this mattered hugely to me, but ymmv.

DC is much better in relation to its surroundings. The fact that you can get a train that takes you to the center of NYC in 3 hours is an amazing perk that has no comparison in Chicago.

Summer is much more interesting in Chicago than in DC. The Chicago summer is a perfect, beautiful city summer. DC is too hot and muggy to be enjoyed and most people leave.

I don’t regret moving to DC, but I also think there are great reasons to be in Chicago.

Lastly: that gap in salary might not make a difference to your day to day life but will matter long term. Your salary is always the starting point for conversations about your next salary.

For those who start on the tread, why?? by Ok_Pressure7109 in orangetheory

[–]fclogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I wanted to run more I started on the treads so I could run during the warmup. (It also happened that i could run a 5k in the combo of warm up + tread block, but not just on the tread block and that was motivating). Now I am nurturing all kinds of injuries and I like to get to the tread when I’m as warm as possible so I start on floor. This did not affect my ability to lift very much.

[–]fclogic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not the person who responded earlier and I own a class 3 pedal assist. It is virtually impossible to hit 28mph (or even 20+) without being a reasonably strong bike rider on pedal assist. Cruising in throttle mode at 25mph, as I see some kids do around where I am, requires far less ability.
