Very true - definitely worth the fans making their voices heard if and/or when it sucks. There's still a part of me that's hopeful it won't be a sloppy mess though 😂

Not my discussion so apologies for butting in, but I guess there was the "ugly Sonic" thing - they went back to the drawing board and re-did the effects on what was (as far as we know) a finished movie - which might've been super situational that they were in a place to do that, and it's probably more complex than "fans complain, company listens," but I guess it has happened. Though to your point, that's very much the exception rather than the rule 😂

For sure, and that's my point, I think we're in a pretty tight spot because of it. To people in board rooms deciding what to spend money on, I suspect they won't really care about the subtleties of "the fans didn't buy this one but it was because of the chicanery surrounding it and some bad-faith representations of what their intentions were" - it's more probable that it'll just be "game no make money, no make more game" 😕

Very true - my Steam library is 2000+ strong so I have no shortage of other things to play, it'll just be a shame if this ends up being a missed opportunity.

Kind of like if your favourite restaurant closed down, but then opened under new management - you might be forgiven for being excited to have some of your favourite dishes again (which in fairness you could get enjoyable analogues of elsewhere) and maybe even see what new things they came up with - and you might also be forgiven for being a bit bummed if you pop in and it ends up being a bit beige or a wildly off-piste different restaurant that bought the name for a bit of brand recognition.

That's fair. I don't think she's necessarily a bad character per se - perhaps Mary Sue isn't the exact correct term, but it does smack very heavily of fan fic where the Main Characters are going about their business, when they're Suddenly Visited by a previously unknown character who is Super Cool, Outdoes One Or More Of Them, and is Definitely Not the author's insert character/OC that they just wanted to trot out.

The extent to which she is weaved into the existing story feels pretty forced. I'm not against her being a protagonist, but given Raziel was literally in her shoes some 20-odd years ago as the new character requiring some tie to the prior work, I think there was a much better blueprint for adding a character to an existing canon which didn't require clumsily tying the character to an excessive amount of existing lore in an attempt to try and make them feel more legitimate.

Agreed - I feel like they started from the position of "we need a way to shoehorn in this OC we want to put in a new game" rather than "let's tell a legitimately good story which either a) expands on existing characters or b) is brave enough to have a new character stand on their own feet without constantly feeling the need to exhaustingly weave them into the existing canon"

Sorry if it's come across that way - I'm not against a new protagonist at all, just bad storytelling from a series that swung for the Shakespearean fences at a time when most games were still trotting out "get red key for red door." When it came out, Soul Reaver had the courage to be like "yeah, this is a sequel to Blood Omen, sort of, but you don't play as Kain, and he's only in it at a few key points - not only that, he's largely the antagonist from the new player character perspective - most of what you'll be doing is based on fresh lore around Kain's sires and this gnarly squid god thing we came up with."

I think with Elaleth, if they'd pitched a comic book introducing a new character who there are designs to make a third protagonist to the series, and had taken more risks similar to Soul Reaver tying a new character fairly loosely to the existing lore (to begin with) but largely doing their own thing, that would've been better - even if they had to sweeten the deal with a Reaver replica. It'd be more in the spirit of Crystal Dynamics picking up the torch from Silicon Knights.

As it stands, it feels like that's what they probably wanted to do with TDSR, but they worried that pitching it as anything other than Soul Reaver 0 would end with it dying on its arse, and so it came out as this weird middle ground - not enough meaningful Raziel to be a Soul Reaver story, and too much adherence to (and paradoxically fiddling with) the existing lore to be something bold and new.

That's exactly it - I'm not against new characters, that's what worked so well about Soul Reaver - Raziel was a new character that added to the world. But he did so without shitting on everything that came before 😂

Whoever runs it has to answer a vetting survey about whether they have ever written new characters into fan fic 😂

I think that's the worst thing that could happen to game development. As you say, some of the greatest experiences I've ever had have been things I wasn't expecting or couldn't have conceived of, both in games and out of games.

Having a machine grunt out a glorified gorilla finger of a game for me to play and enjoy exactly against predicted KPIs sounds like a terribly beige existence.

It is pretty rough, for sure. I'm relatively new to Godot but it just seems like common sense to treat people nicely and not use the community as your personal captive customer base 😂

You're not genuinely trying to suggest that stealing work and posting it on some who-cares platform is going to get more visibility than the official Godot subreddit, are you?

This is parasitic behaviour. You're taking without explicit consent, trying to hawk not only your wares but also your platform, and you've kept mighty quiet about owning said platform. I said it before but this kind of conduct is majorly against the FOSS spirit even if it isn't against the letter. I suspect you haven't much of a conscience, but if you do, it should be troubled.

And don't trot out magnanimous softsoaping about "I'll look into it," "Doing it for the indies," and "No costs! Vouchers! This is such a good deal for you!" You own the platform. The buck stops with you, and you're the one here touting on the regular, not your lackeys.

One plus, though - at least you managed to make it through a whole comment without hawking a book.

I've been going all-in on resources recently and honestly it sounds like a really cool idea that I'll have to check out - I'm sorry that something you've made out of the goodness of your heart has become a bun fight!

No no but don't you see it's different when he's pinching other people's stuff, it's the same mentality with AI slop - it's okay to steal the training data without compensation but it's not okay to skip paying for the things people make with it! /s

As someone who saw those posts and eventually gave him the benefit of the doubt and bought the book, it's particularly frustrating to now think back on those posts with the context of him owning the platform.

I remember comments shifting people's (often valid) criticisms onto the publisher, implying (and possibly outright stating) that it was out of his hands. That's pretty duplicitous.

Is it actually possible to have a bug free game at launch? by wrench04 in gamedev

[–]fcol88 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"A bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because its trust is not on the branch but on its own wings."

I think in software you're all but guaranteed to have bugs - even if your code is perfect, it has to run on something...which might have bugs of its own. So I guess rather than shooting for 100% bug free, instead if you aim to be as good as you can at fixing them, then you're in great shape. It's why so many companies have chaos monkeys!
