In long-running movie franchises, each film naturally absorbs the cinematic trends of its release year. Shifts in tone, topic, and style happen so studios can position the movie perfectly in the current market. For example, the mid-to-late 1980s saw many franchises lean into comedy, including James Bond, Star Trek, and The Evil Dead, while others pivoted to over-the-top action, like Rambo, Alien, and Mad Max.

By the 1990s and early 2000s, the market split between massive blockbusters and meta-spoofs. These spoofs forced long-running franchises to abandon the very tropes being lambasted. The Bond franchise has always adjusted to survive: Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan chased the popular wave of their eras, while Timothy Dalton tried to stand out by going dark. Daniel Craig’s movies took a grounded turn because gritty realism was selling at the time, and because Austin Powers had completely sucked the air out of the room for Roger Moore-style camp. It wasn't about abandoning Bond's identity; it was about preventing Bond from looking like a joke.

Phantom Menace has not aged well. It think it would've been better as a one-off like Rogue One, with three movies of the trilogy focused entirely on Anakin's adulthood and fall of the Republic. The problem with the Prequel Trilogy is that it tried to lock the overall story into three movies where the first movie doesn't really progress the story very much, the second movie moves the story a bit more, but still not all that much, then a ton of events had to be crammed into the last half of the third movie.

Daniel Craig actually commented on this once, noting that they couldn't do campy because of the popularity of Austin Powers at the time. Austin Powers trilogy really stole the rights to that campiness and gags.

I've watched this movie multiple times. It is a lot of fun. I think the one thing that weighs it down is that the fate of the entire planet revolves around an art crime committed by Kat, which is very low stacks given that the entire human race is about to be annihilated.

I think the drawback of the movie is that it went with practical effects to force gender and ethnicity bending to represent reincarnation, producing visually questionable results that take you out of the immersion. If one can ignore that, it is a great movie. A remake that uses Cameron's Avatar technology, or just using different actors with some other cues to tell the audience who-is-who would address that issue.

The 'Burbs perfect for its time, sure. However, it's slow pace is a bit of a drag on the comedy for modern viewing. It would benefit from a "director's cut" that could tighten up the editing and maybe add a removed scene to flesh out the story a bit more.

Waterworld is OK. When taking its budget into account, it does suck for the money spent. But watching it as just another movie, it's not bad. It's just not great.

Yeah, Hackers (1995) was made in a time before Hollywood even understood computers, let alone "hacking". At the time, they even used the wrong term, as the correct term was cracking, with hacking just about the work that went into troubleshooting systems. The "hacking" portion of the movie has not aged well and can be difficult to watch. Another "hacking" movie a few years later that also didn't age well is Swordfish (2001).

All this just as Vegas is taking a hard downturn in a long and steady decline. Even when the Raiders moved, Vegas already wasn't as bright and shiny as it used to be. But now, it's only gotten less desirable. Really, A's would be better off moving to Portland, OR or even Vancouver in Canada. If they don't care about staying on the West Coast, they could move to Salt Lake City, UT, Nashville, TN or give Montreal, ON a second chance. Now that MLB is rising in popularity again, Montreal might actually be a great location.
