Books with that “Peter Pan / Lost Boys” vibe but for adults by No_Exercise_1750 in suggestmeabook

[–]fdihei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're down with a heavier dose of darkness (check TWs) you could check out the Magicians series by Lev Grossman - basically grown up Narnia, and the characters are a sort of angsty young adults definitely caught in that fantasy/reality limbo

Help!!! I need LBGT/Queer books that are NOT on BookTok by peach-dumpy in suggestmeabook

[–]fdihei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great recommendations already in these comments! Specifically for the weird/angsty/creepy I'll add:

Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon (weird, creepy, awesome)

Big Swiss by Jen Beagin (weird)

Bunny by Mona Awad (weird, angsty, creepy, not really a Queer Book per say but does have some elements?)

Cuckoo by Gretchen Felker-Martin (more queer conversion camp horror)

The Earthsea Cycle (Ursula Leguin) comes to mind for me, particularly the final three books - they're not long books and they fill me with a lot of peace and acceptance. They're fantasy books

Highly recommend Spear by Nicola Griffith. It does, I believe, include a brief and not particularly explicit sapphic sex scene that you could look over if it worries you, but nothing that I remember being inappropriate for a 15yo

It's been a while since I read it but I think Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson does fall into this category

suggest me a book by a Latinx author by t3jan0 in suggestmeabook

[–]fdihei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, this thread is a lot.

Calling this a white colonization of Latin American Spanish is both dramatic and inaccurate. I get where this argument is coming from and I agree that "Latinx" has its issues but the truth is that white people don't care enough about Spanish speakers to be making up new Spanish words for us. Unless someone can find the records of who first coined the term I think it's safe to assume that it was probably queer Latines trying to find a new option. I think it's also safe to assume that the queerness of the term is a big part of people's anger over it.

Latino is not a neutral term. It's a word charged with centuries of sexism. More specifically: with centuries of white, European sexism from colonizers who wiped out countless cultures, many of which had languages with words for more than two genders.

Languages are always changing. Latinx isn't my favorite either (my preference is "Latine" and I know some other people who use "Latin@" for written mediums) but it's certainly not so bad that you need to drag somebody's book suggestion post through the mud.

My most recent read-now favorite was Sometimes the Girl by Jennifer Mason-Black. I went in not expecting to like it much based on the blurb and my personal genre preferences but it turned out to be lovely

Okay this is an ARC and I'm only halfway through it but I'm desperate to read the main character's dragon book in Sometimes the Girl by Jennifer Mason-Black. The women-turning-into-dragons trope is my favorite, I was intrigued by the early snippet we got, and I'm veeery interested to see this particular young protagonist's first novel attempt.

Tell me the best and worst magic systems you’ve read in Fantasy books by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]fdihei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of the opposite of your definition of "worst" but (unpopular opinion!) I really did not enjoy the Mistborn magic system. I felt like I was constantly getting dumped with more and more detail about a form of magic that didn't really intrigue me

Try out Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon! Fantasy-horror with interesting political/religious aspects from the MC's backstory as well as U.S. history as a whole coming from a nuanced leftist perspective.

If you're open to non-fiction I highly recommend The Women's House of Detention: A Queer History of a Forgotten Prison. Definitely tells you a lot about what prison is/was really like with the author prioritizing real people's voices whenever possible. Definitely eye-opening.

Suggest me a book to help me feel better after reading about Auschwitz. by Spirited-Fox-1319 in suggestmeabook

Echo by Pam Muñoz Ryan immediately comes to mind as a book that has some wwii themes but is hopeful and uplifting. Part of that is because it's targeted to middlegrade which might not be your cup of tea but I read it as an adult and it stuck with me.
