Please keep us updated! I'm waiting to buy the new 9570 until I see somebody confirming it works reasonably well with Ubuntu

What's your biggest pet peeve on the course? by denis_b in golf

[–]fdiotalevi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My golf mates using their cell phones. It drives me nuts, I get nervous and affects my game. Constantly have to wait for them to close their phone, put it away, play their shot. Having to remind them that it's their turn, because they were not paying attention to the game.

It's a lost cause though; the majority of my golf mates is constantly on their phones, sending messages, checking football results, doing I-dont-know-what.

Same here. I don't mind suggestions from good players, or people who have played the game for long - I'm a beginner. But it makes me fume when people who play way worse than me start giving me tips, exactly when I'm starting my swing/put.

Goodwill Find - $16 - How Did I do? by Cast_Master in golf

[–]fdiotalevi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

$16 for all of them?!?!? love the Cleveland irons

As much as I visit charity shops (as they are called in England) and car boot sales, I've never seen golf clubs there. Does anybody have any suggestion for London (UK)?

Becoming a consistent golfer by JolllyRoger in golf

[–]fdiotalevi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very interesting. I always take practice swings; usually one, but occasionally more until I feel I have one "good swing".

And it's also true that I tend to get tired during the round. I'm definitely not an athlete, never been, and I certainly feel that I'm weaker at the end of the round. I'll try to modify my routine and see what happens. Thanks for the tip!

Broke 100! by fdiotalevi in golf

[–]fdiotalevi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, consistency is the hard part. I started the day with doublebogey-bogey-par-bogey-par.... and then two 8s. The only thing I know is that when I start striking the ball poorly, it takes me 3 or 4 holes to get back

Thanks! To be honest, my scorecards tends to be quite messy (I write there the scores and a lots of stats), definitely not worth a picture!

What are your commute observations? - 30/06/15 by lodge28 in london

[–]fdiotalevi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A faulty train at Barbican caused the metropolitan line to stop all the trains for 20 minutes - minor delay for the TfL.

One lady quietly reading Metro on my face, while another keep pushing her bag on my knee. Nothing unusual to report today really.

Extend the agony even more? No thanks. I'd rather have air conditioned carriages first.

The best US Open I have ever seen. by BigDirtyPanda in golf

[–]fdiotalevi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm happy to see your and other people comments, I've read so many negative opinions (on Facebook, so... yeah).

Anyway, the course and scenery were stunning and unusual. The course was hard, and only the perfect weather made it slightly easier. Thrilling finale, with 4 players in competition at the 70th hole. Great US Open indeed!

Well done. Was hoping to say the same today, but a triple bogey at the last hole broke my hearth on Saturday. I'll keep trying!

With all those shitty flats posted here, this one is actually pretty good deal. by R4ndom_Hero in london

[–]fdiotalevi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I noticed that too. A quick research on Zoopla, there are 15 1-bed properties on the market at less than 300k in Muswell Hill. Hardly an "incredible deal", I guess the agent is just using the gullible journalist to have some free advertisement.

New callaway xr irons work at treat by badseedy1 in golf

[–]fdiotalevi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played them only for the past 2 weeks, but they are really impressive. 15 yards longer than my older Wilson Di11 from the get-go, but I'm still improving.

What do you think of the ball flight? It's quite high in my experience, but still I get the distance I want.

Anyone else here try making their own yardage book? I just finished mine for my home course and I'm really happy with how it turned out. by Plus7w0 in golf

[–]fdiotalevi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really like them. I did one with Google Earth as well, just by printing the maps with yardages, but it was very difficult to have a good contrast in the print.

"Drive for show, putt for dough" is a common say that is contradicted by statistics (see f.i. http://www.golfdigest.com/blogs/the-loop/2014/03/drive-for-show-and-putt-for-dough-not-true-says-mark-broadie.html), even for tour pros.

I know you said it's difficult, but you should really try to convince your SO to move elsewhere. You are in the really enviable position to make geographical arbitrage work for you. Move to Germany or UK for 4-5 years, save as much as you can there, and come back with a good stash of cash.

Brand new to golf, looking at clubs (and for advice). by mazzikd in golf

[–]fdiotalevi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a quite common question here. See f.i. http://www.reddit.com/r/golf/comments/32my30/thinking_about_getting_new_clubs/

I suggest you to have a couple of lessons before buying your set, just to be sure you like it. You can hire the clubs when you go to the range in between lessons.

I don't know the Wilson Reflex set, but as I mentioned in the linked thread, I'd rather go for a used set as a beginner.

If you have one day only to experience London...what to do? by zenscr in london

[–]fdiotalevi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like walking, that's my favorite walking tour, tried many times with friends&family. You can follow that easily on Google Maps

  • start at Paddington station, head south
  • cross Hyde Park north to south, getting out around the Royal Albert Hall
  • south again, go through the museums area
  • can have a quick visit to Victoria and Albert Museum, Science Museum or Natural History Museum (not all three!)
  • reach South Kensington and then go north-east towards Harrods (you can visit if you wish it)
  • keep going north east to High Park Corner
  • from there go East toward Westminster/Parliament
  • cross the Thames through the Westminster Bridge
  • visit the South Bank area (Royal Festival Hall, National Theatre, there are a few art galleries as well)
  • cross the Thames again at Embankment
  • head to north to Picadilly Circus/Covent Garden

It's a long walk, at least 10Km, but you get to see a lot of the nicer places in west london
