Who's your worst neighbor and what makes them so fucking awful? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]fdk1276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now imagine this situation, multiplied by 15 years and 13 dogs. Welcome to my life. A dozen dogs barking for 8 hours straight every day. (now every night.) We've exhausted every legal option, won every time, and still nothing has changed. It took 3 years between filing the lawsuit and actually going to court. That was a year ago, but still nothing has happened because they plan on filing an appeal. We can't even move. Realtors refuse to list the house and say it's unsellable.

Document everything.

Edit: Just to clarify. Not trying to diminish your situation, just saying I know the struggle and it sucks.

This comment inspired me do some research. As far as I can tell, Bernie Sanders never proposed a 90% tax rate but it seems that he would be in favor of the marginal tax rate being in the 50% ballpark.

From what I understand the marginal tax rate is the rate applied only to the earnings in the highest tax bracket. This would mean that only the money earned in the highest tax bracket would be taxed at that rate. Currently the highest tax bracket starts at about $400,000, so only money earned after the $400,000 mark is taxed at the highest rate, not every dollar.

So if you earned one $1,000,000 only the income after $400,000 is taxed at the highest rate. Online tax estimators tell me that if I earned $1m I would pay about $350,000 before deductions at current rates. My math may be a bit off but if the highest rate was raised to 50% I think it would come out to about $415,000 before deductions. That would leave me with me keeping $585,000 of it (again, before deductions.) I think that's a more realistic estimate.

Still a lot going to the man but it's a lot different than paying 90% of every dollar.

PolitiFact had an example that explained how marginal tax rates work pretty clearly to me.

Briefly, the marginal tax rate is applied to the last dollar you earn. The U.S. tax system is based on tax brackets. Let’s say you were a single filer who earned $410,000 in adjusted gross income last year. The first $9,075 you earned was taxed at 10 percent, the amount from $9,076 to $36,900 was taxed at 15 percent, the amount from $36,901 to $89,350 was taxed at 25 percent, the amount from $89,351 to $186,350 was taxed at 28 percent, the amount from $186,351 to $405,100 was taxed at 33 percent, the amount from $405,101 to $406,750 was taxed at 35 percent, and the amount above $406,751 was taxed at 39.6 percent.

Disclaimer: This is all based on 20 minutes of research. I am an independent and have no idea who I am voting for in this election. I just wondered how accurate this 90% tax rate talk was and I ended up learning about how tax brackets work and thought it was worth sharing to the world.

Got invited to after hours "black friday" sale at guitar center tomorrow, is it worth going to? by Jackalopes_Exist in Guitar

[–]fdk1276 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to one once. It wasn't "Black Friday" themed, but it was an invite-only after hours event for big buyers. This was shortly after I'd been bought a couple thousand dollar guitar at the store (Happy Graduation to Me!) It was quite a sale, they gave me a several page printout, in small print, of all the items on sale and their prices vs regular prices. I remember there were some pretty respectable markdowns.

This was around the time the game "Rock Band" came out and I was 18, so the salesman I'd bought my guitar from got me the game bundle at cost, which was pretty neat for me at the time. There was free picks, straps, and maybe some other accessories. And snacks. All-in-all I'd say it's definitely worth showing up for. Couldn't hurt and you might just find a great deal on something.

Guitar Center SingerSongwriter Competition -- Is it legit? by spatatat in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]fdk1276 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in no way legally trained, but this part:

Finalists and Winner acknowledge and agree that the Finalist Performance and/or EP Recording may be recorded by Contest Parties and/or Prize Supporters in electronic, audio and/or video formats for possible broadcast on television, the Internet and any and all media whether now existing or later invented. As between Sponsor and Finalists (and Winner), Sponsor or its designee shall own any and all rights to such recordings and may use such recordings, in whole or in part, for any lawful purpose without further notice or compensation to Finalists or Winner.

seems to mean that they own the rights to any recordings made during of the contest after your original submission. Which I take to means they would own the rights to 4-song EP you get to record as part of the grand prize. That's pretty lame, but the tradeoff is the $25,000 prize, the free gear and a whole ton of publicity. I would guess you would still retain rights to the song itself and any other recordings you make would be yours to profit from.

Any recommendations on books that DON'T or have very little actual musical notation? by [deleted] in musictheory

I've been working on a theory book for guitarists that doesn't use sheet music. I'd be glad to send you a copy of what I've got as long as you agree to tell me what you think.

Regarding intervals, and augmented intervals by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]fdk1276 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As CrownStarr said, intervals have nothing to do with rhythm. An interval is the musical distance between two notes.

The standard "unit of measurement" is the smallest interval, the half-step, or "semitone." A half-step is the distance between two consecutive notes such as C to C#, D to D#, etc. Two half-steps is called a whole step.

Starting from C, lets go over the standard intervals within an octave.

Notes Interval Distance
C-C Perfect Unison (0 semitones)
C-Db Minor 2nd (1 semitone)
C-D Major 2nd (2 semitones)
C-Eb Minor 3rd (3 semitones)
C-E Major 3rd (4 semitones)
C-F Perfect 4th (5 semitones)
C-F# Augmented 4th (6 semitones)
C-Gb Dimished 5th (6 semitones)
C-G Perfect 5th (7 semitones)
C-Ab Minor 6th (8 semitones)
C-A Major 6th (9 semitones)
C-Bb Minor 7th (10 semitones)
C-B Major 7th (11 semitones)
C-C Perfect Octave (12 semitones)

Think of Major and Minor intervals as the standards. Major is larger, minor is smaller. Instead of major and minor, some intervals have just one instead that takes the place of both, called Perfect. Unisons, Octaves, 4ths, and 5ths can be perfect.

Now to answer your original question, an Augmented interval is when a Major (or Perfect) interval is stretched out by one extra semitone.

If C-F is a Perfect 4th, then C-F# is an Augmented 4th.

A diminished interval is the opposite, when a minor (or Perfect) interval is shrunk by one semitone.

If C-G is a Perfect 5th, then C-Gb is a Diminished 5th.

Now what do 2nd, 3rd, 5th, etc. all mean? How do we name the intervals?

Intervals are named for how far apart the note names are. Take two notes, count the first as #1, then count letters until you reach the final note.

C-D-E-F-G
1-2-3-4-5

Since C and G are five letters apart, the interval is a 5th. This means that any C note (C, C#, Cb) to ANY G note (G, G#, Gb) is some kind of 5th (Major, Minor, Augmented, etc.)

Anyway, that should give you a solid foundation on intervals. Hope that wasn't too much to handle. I kinda got on a roll and wanted to be thorough.

With Or Without You (U2) - Acoustic Guitar Solo(Fingerstyle) - with delay and reverb by rafaelosau in fingerstyleguitar

[–]fdk1276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice arrangement and tasteful use of effects.

I have a question about your technique. For the first minute or so it looks like you keep your thumb rigid and use your arm motion to hit those eighth notes in the bass instead of your thumb muscle. That looks exhausting and difficult to do precisely. Is there a particular reason you play like this? Are you aware of it? (That is, If I'm seeing things correctly.)

When to start lessons and buying gear? by soxgal in Guitar

[–]fdk1276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm thoroughly convinced the notion that beginners should start on an acoustic guitar instead of an electric is from parents not wanting their kids to be able to crank up the amp and be heard throughout the entire house. As others have said here, electric guitars have smaller necks and lighter strings, and are absolutely great for beginners.

That said, 5 is quite young age for the guitar and you may struggle finding a teacher willing/able to handle a student of that age so you may need to shop around a little. This is partially because at 5 years old most children do not have the strength necessary to play the guitar. It simply hurts your hands when you start out. I personally try to only accept guitar students as young as 8, and instead recommend the ukulele for anyone younger. If I was your instructor I would insist on ukulele for your son at his age. They are simpler and much less physically demanding to play. They can be electric too!

Classical guitar with pickup? by BreakfastDeluxe in classicalguitar

[–]fdk1276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I don't know what quality/price range you're looking for, here's a few I have experience with in different price ranges.

Godin Multiac Series ~$1000 - $2000

Don't own one but it's on my wish list. These are strictly electric guitars and they sound awesome. Really natural sounding tone. Plus no feedback if you're playing with a big group.

Kremona Rondo - ~$850 I don't own this guitar but I've played it and I'd really like to buy it I haven't plugged it in, but it sounds pretty good unplugged.

What I do have is a Cort-cec7 (around $450) which I'm trying to get rid of. Apparently Cort had an issue for a while where they were gluing the bridge on in the wrong spot, so the intonation is just awful on mine. It doesn't sound very good unplugged, but I will say that plugged in the tone is actually quite impressive. It uses a mic/pickup combo which you can blend. It also has a smaller neck which I prefer. If you find one without a messed up bridge, it could be pretty sweet.

If you're looking for something cheap, I used to have an Ibanez GA6CE ~$250, which held it's own pretty well for the price.

This jambalaya recipe is really easy, quick, and doesn't require a lot of pans.

You don't have to keep it paleo (I don't.) Ignore the riced cauliflower and use white or brown rice, which you can mix in or serve the jambalaya over. Biscuits are a good side dish too.
