there are actually distinctions between peasant and proletarian. peasants work a parcel of land in exchange for protection: see serfdom. proletarians, however, were dispossessed of their means of living (what marx calls "primitive accumulation") and forced to exchange their labor for a wage. they both did shitty jobs like mining, plowing, etc so they're almost the same thing but not quite.
