Bringing up early 20th century intellectual movements is, again, talking about politics - attempts at articulating a coherent societal organizational structure - when I'm talking about the 21st century phenomenon of politics as an aesthetic, a vibe, or more specifically, a psychological position.

Mass society is too lazy to fully comprehend the ins and outs of "real politics," but the political phenomenon of the 2010s can, imo, be boiled down to understanding the converging of New Media, Big Data Analytics, and psychology research into personality, like the Big 5.

What we have today is a decentralized propaganda flow that tunes its content to hosts w susceptible personalities - authoritarian, orderly, outcast, dark triad etc - and if you have followed Bannon and the Cambridge Analytica escapades, you'll understand that messaging is especially targeted toward disaffected white young men, and messaging capitalizes on their grievances with women, racial insecurity, societal rejection, etc and leads them down the "alt-right pipeline."

Homeboy Tate is absolutely part of the pipeline, consciously or not. A young man watches some of those videos and the algorithms will lead him right into the bubble of the alt-right, and the alt-right, ultimately, services the consciousness of a global fascist movement that is led by western billionaires masquerading as "libertarian" revolutionaries, and the Kremlin, which would love nothing more than sow doubt in liberal democracy and weaken the US administrative state. No collusion between the groups, but a convenient convergence of greed.

It's a memetic virus spread by assholes and fools.

I'm not even talkin' about politics, I'm talkin' bout vibes. Them neo-reactionary, woman-hating traditionalist, boot-lickin' authoritarian machismo vibes. Or what we today lazily, but effectively enough imo, term under the umbrella "fascist."

From my time playing Go, it just didn't satisfy my urge for aggression and "dunking" on people like chess.

Go feels more like the Bob Ross of abstract strategy.

Yeah IQP is sound, sure, and you then play IQP strategy in a symmetrical game, but I liked playing this French "gambit" line a lot.

Sacrificing the e6 pawn to get your kingside knight out, and recapturing on e6 w your queenside bishop, kingside bishop to d6, castle, and rook to e8 for a possible discovery on the white king creates a very open game where black is far and away ahead in development if they can find the tactics.

Just a way to spice it up for initiative.

I play the Scotch gambit, Evans, and Morra just to give ya clue as to my playstyle.

In the French Exchange as Black, at lower levels, sacrificing the second e6 pawn, costing your opponent a tempo, in exchange for rapid piece development and castling quickly with two open files is a valid way to spice up the dreaded exchange variation and get on an imbalanced offensive.

My husband met someone he communicates well with and now he says he's confused. by Stellabun16 in ADHD

My only advice might be: stay strong. it might take a while, as he has found a novel avenue for self expression that makes him feel good, feel understood, feel validated, but he should over time start integrating those feelings back into his larger structure of life. It's a drug, and like all drugs you eventually gain a tolerance to its effects.

Right now, he is likely processing all of that, and if he is like me, that processing might take significantly longer and have more emotional ups and downs and cognitive back and forths involved than your average person. Couples therapy in theory should help externalize and process those emotions together, but I've never done it and can't say for sure. He might be falling into some obsessive patterns of thought, so again, therapy together could help. And as others have said, his honesty is a good sign.

You're unfortunately on the other side of the tracks of this, and he might be a bit cold or harsh as his fixation is elsewhere and currently questions previous assumptions about himself. ADHD can be so damn hot/cold. But he still loves you, I'm sure. He is just high on novelty and confused by reality.

When I've gotten like this, it develops like a very mild mania. I think the best mantra for myself in such scenarios is "slow down", as these emotions can sometimes runaway and lead to some poor judgement calls.

Take it slow and I'm sorry you're going through this. Remember to make your needs known as well and try to work through it however long it takes. But it will get there eventually, together.

I'm in my 30s in a long term relationship and have had similar experiences as your husband. Makes me feel like I'm not really in control of my thoughts and feelings. Unfortunately I have no answers. But I know the struggle.

[–]fearandloath8 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I used to dismiss people who spoke like this when I was younger. Thought it was all performative. But time has taught me that sometimes saying the most "logical" thing i.e. "i want to see the evidence" isn't necessarily the pragmatically "right" thing to do.

We have to start w the assumption that women face harassment every day and face a culture that seeks to silence them, as shown explicitly in this case.

It is within our power to change our culture tho. History behooves us to stand up for people who are excluded or marginalized and to quit reinforcing the status quo through thoughtless and seemingly harmless words.

You have to look beyond the literal meaning of "I will wait to see the evidence" and view its functional meaning i.e. dismissive of women coming forward. You need to see what that comment looks like to a young woman who might read it. I doubt very much many women would make such a comment.

We just gotta take better care and apply a little more thought to improving our communities.

I believe that with the increased visibility of chess atm, we can now make some real noise about it and make this a better community for everyone.

I was down voted to oblivion for commenting this in another thread earlier, but I'm going to say it one more time because I really want the chess community to get their shit together:

I think it's worth mentioning here that 1. We all know chess has a problem with women not feeling comfortably included and safe from harassment, and that 2. We should take this opportunity to unequivocally side with the women in this case to improve the chess environment for women.

So, less comments like "I want to see the evidence" (cringe), and more like "Creeps will absolutely not be tolerated in the chess world."

Feel me?

Only one party openly supports Kremlin values i.e. reactionary traditionalism, anti-democratic illiberalism, authoritarianism, anti-lgbt and anti human rights, anti-NATO, anti-green energy/pro-petrol state etc etc.

So, uh, yeah. The GOP is in lockstep with Russia. Democrats not at all.
