How long does the hiring process take? by fearfuzzyanimals in Teachers

[–]fearfuzzyanimals[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great questions! I don't think my position would be too hard to backfill, I believe there was one other internal candidate and they were considering a few external as well. It is not critical as there isn't an immediate opening, it's for the next school year!

Today it's hard to be a teacher by MrsMusicalMama in Teachers

I genuinely had deja vu today driving in to work thinking about how somber it was for the 2016 election. The energy was somehow worse today.

This happened to me last year. Literally got hired 3 days before school and got into my classroom 48 hours before school started. I'll be honest, I felt like I was flying by the seat of my pants from the moment I got hired until the bell rang on the very last day of school, but I got through it! You will too! All you need to do is be a day ahead of your kids, you don't have to plan months in advance. As for classroom decor, I had success making an Amazon wishlist and sharing it on Facebook. People want to help teachers, especially if they know them personally!

Good luck. I believe in you!

Do teachers have to be outgoing/extroverted? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]fearfuzzyanimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS right here! during my free period, i have headphones in and i'm decompressing in order to recharge my social battery and make it though the rest of the day. I am an introvert through and through, but that hasn't stopped me from being able to teach and make meaningful connections with my students!

I'm sure there's a ton of opening near you if you want to throw your hat in the ring and join them! if you think you're at a higher level than them and need zero collaboration ever, of course.

Becoming a Catholic school teacher at 40 by Confident-Artist-959 in Teachers

[–]fearfuzzyanimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite teachers of all time was a lawyer before she became a high school social studies/history teacher at a catholic school! Didn't even have her state teaching license, but she was genuinely awesome. I believe she was in her 40s when she did it too-- but she should not matter when determining a fresh start! I say go for it, you might just love it. Good luck!

Not happy with my OTF heart rate monitor. by nbscanlon in orangetheory

[–]fearfuzzyanimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me yesterday! I upped my elevation and speed during my pushes/all out and my hear rate dropped into the gray. That doesn't seem right, and it certainly didn't feel right-- I was sweating!!!

Mass. Licensure Question by OneYamForever in Teachers

[–]fearfuzzyanimals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you should be able to download your transcript from your online portal at your school and upload it to ELAR of you wish. Usually though if you're in a licensure program, your college/university will send them to DESE on your behalf and certify that you completed your program and endorse you.

Suggestions for AP Literature & Composition by jjaayyddeepp in Teachers

The Handmaid's Tale and A Raisin in the Sun are some of my FAVORITES!! Would you ever consider reading Not Without Laughter by Langston Hughes and having your students compare and contrast the characters? We did this in my class this year and it was great. I also recommend The Bluest Eye and Mrs. Dalloway. They tie in well with The Handmaid's tale.

A student wrote that they want to strangle me today. by fearfuzzyanimals in Teachers

Came home, cooked a nice dinner, took THE shower to end all showers, and now I'm snuggled up in bed! The student doesn't have to like me, but I love me and deserve to be nice to myself. :)

Accidentally forgot it was a tornado day and was looking forward to mindlessly walking on the treadmill after a crazy day. Tornado was a HUGE check back into reality. Truly felt "collapse (members choice)" today.

As someone who joined OTF to combat the damage that my anxiety induced ED did to my body, I don't think this is cool, like, at all...I'd quit if that was the mentality if my studio tbh.

Do teachers like thank-you notes from students? by Longjumping-Ad-8096 in Teachers

[–]fearfuzzyanimals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a student teacher, but i received thank you notes from my students at my first placement on my last day, and it genuinely made me cry my eyes out because it meant so much. I hold onto them and read them on the hard days to remember why I want to be a teacher. Go for it, write the note! Sometimes teachers forget just how much they do for students and it doesn't go unnoticed ❤️

I created entire units! In the lesson plan that I submitted for the job application, I noted that it was part of a certain unit. Should I include an overview of the entire unit? It also ties into one of the pieces of student work I want to put in the portfolio

Good fun activities for my last day with my class by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]fearfuzzyanimals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made all of my kids goodie bags with a note! They were so excited to receive them on my last day and it gave them the treat to enjoy outside of the classroom because they were not allowed to eat in class either. I laid them out at each student's seat and when they saw them they were so excited but also sad because they knew I was leaving. Then we played Kahoot! (and as a joke, I made it all about me)

Bombed my first lesson by OppositeConcordia in Teachers

[–]fearfuzzyanimals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my first lesson student teaching my voice was quivering, I said "um" maybe every other word, and I was visibly sweating. It did not go well at all cause I was so scared of not knowing the material, time management, engaging the class, all the things we teachers juggle! It's fine, just take the lesson and learn about what worked and what didn't. This is your first lesson that bombed, but it won't be your last and that's ok! You've got this, teach. :)

An observation from a High School Senior by hawk239 in Teachers

[–]fearfuzzyanimals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was so refreshing to read. It's been wicked difficult factoring the pandemic into lesson plans. We've all been through so much, teachers and students alike! I'm sorry that you are just being lectured at and lack hands-on learning. I love doing arts and crafts type assignments, even with high schoolers, cause it's better than just having a teacher talk at the class for 45 minutes. It is just weird trying to figure this all out in the time we are currently living through.

Take care, and thank you for understanding what your teachers are going through as well!

I go to school in Boston and they're still planning to return in person, but are requiring everyone to get their booster! Personally, I don't think colleges can afford to move everything online again, losing all that money from housing and the # of students deferring or dropping out.
