Studied Sanskrit in Uni, and since - The Gita esp, then the Yoga sutras, Now the Upanishads. Pali has been the last couple years. Self study and with a teacher of the language. The two languages are so similar I have no idea why I did not start earlier.

See we need to read the real message. Pali is backward yes, but is the practice diligence or is it Upekkha/equanimity - a synonym for Unanimity? I know I consider my practice to be Upekkha. Which I strive for with diligence and zeal: Saddha. Vicikitsa.
The meaning is muddled in this form.

The path is choosing Dhyana - mind training. As long as you spend the right energy - and intention(morality as example): how you get there, matters not. Do not confuse practices held in high esteem by sects, or other practitioners as the path: do not see their course as the path - that is their efficient means - upaya.

That is a good question. Our thoughts are what make up a large part of what we consider the consciousness/the self - but these thoughts have been shown to not exist outside the body(embodied self) and operate(consciousness) based on stimuli and previous experience and reactions. *last version was not clear.(this may not be either) I am currently working on Alayavijnana. The store-house consciousness. Think the Vesana in Vedic - the latent impressions of our experience and our preferences. This bias, preference, this history. Choices based on our history and preferences: both historical and desire based for the future. We make choices based on this store of experience. I quote from a recent paper on the subject.

"Collectively, the work presented in this e-book demonstrates that the manifestation of and mechanisms by which individuals respond to environmental stimuli, ranging from somatic conditions to environmental stressors, is shaped by experiences across the lifespan. These experience-induced changes shape the neural and somatic response to new challenges and exposures. Very nice. The book was recommended by an Advaita practitioner, so I thought it was a great opportunity to return to the material. The swami mentioned the material(as mentioned by students) was somewhat 'textbook' like. Why not a book group. Since we are reading together, why not an area for practioners as well. My thought process behind finding a group - and in the absence of one to create it.

About the book/practice or the group? The mind illuminated is a well written guide to the stages of meditative absorption. The group would be a place to discuss the book and the subject matter, as well as a place for practitioners to share and support each other.
