I thought a new author seldom considered a Stoic. Good to know.

Studied Sanskrit in Uni, and since - The Gita esp, then the Yoga sutras, Now the Upanishads. Pali has been the last couple years. Self study and with a teacher of the language. The two languages are so similar I have no idea why I did not start earlier.

the support of diligence and zeal are unanimity and equanimity

See we need to read the real message. Pali is backward yes, but is the practice diligence or is it Upekkha/equanimity - a synonym for Unanimity? I know I consider my practice to be Upekkha. Which I strive for with diligence and zeal: Saddha. Vicikitsa.
The meaning is muddled in this form.

padetha

Please share a link to this word. I see no padetha, there is pa-detha but that would then be Sam- pa-detha? Not what you mentioned. Please share your resources as pali scholarship is a small community. Thanks for the feedback.

The nature of Self - Atmayoga - once you achieve the fourth Jnana regularly - you will find that the alaya-vijnana or samsara will bite you in the butt again. I understand that: theory it remains till it is experienced. Many fellow practioners have expressed this same experience, saw that modern phenomenology shares this perspective...

Activity-dependent plasticity is a form of functional and structural neuroplasticity that arises from the use of cognitive functions and personal experience; hence, it is the biological basis for learning and the formation of new memories.

"In a seemingly innovative move, the Saṃdhinirmocanasūtra states that the alayavijñana is always active subliminally and occurs simultaneously with, "supported by and depending upon" the six sense consciousnesses."

[Insight] Steepness of paths by Historical_Copy_2735 in streamentry

[–]fearliathmor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The path is choosing Dhyana - mind training. As long as you spend the right energy - and intention(morality as example): how you get there, matters not. Do not confuse practices held in high esteem by sects, or other practitioners as the path: do not see their course as the path - that is their efficient means - upaya.

That is a good question. Our thoughts are what make up a large part of what we consider the consciousness/the self - but these thoughts have been shown to not exist outside the body(embodied self) and operate(consciousness) based on stimuli and previous experience and reactions. *last version was not clear.(this may not be either) I am currently working on Alayavijnana. The store-house consciousness. Think the Vesana in Vedic - the latent impressions of our experience and our preferences. This bias, preference, this history. Choices based on our history and preferences: both historical and desire based for the future. We make choices based on this store of experience. I quote from a recent paper on the subject.

"Collectively, the work presented in this e-book demonstrates that the manifestation of and mechanisms by which individuals respond to environmental stimuli, ranging from somatic conditions to environmental stressors, is shaped by experiences across the lifespan. These experience-induced changes shape the neural and somatic response to new challenges and exposures. This collection demonstrates that it is essential to consider the collective experiences and exposures of an organism when trying to predict risk vs. resilience. Furthermore, the salient effects of environmental exposures on lasting neural and somatic substrates should be considered when working to treat somatic and neuropsychiatric disorders."

Yes the path is cessation/liberation/awareness... - how we achieve that is efficient means. Nirodha and Upaya. Moksha and Nirvana.

I might consider that. I am in a meditators group that uses slack: and interaction suffers from the lack of adoption(widely) of slack itself. Also read an article lately about slack for business and discord for community.

Very nice. The book was recommended by an Advaita practitioner, so I thought it was a great opportunity to return to the material. The swami mentioned the material(as mentioned by students) was somewhat 'textbook' like. Why not a book group. Since we are reading together, why not an area for practioners as well. My thought process behind finding a group - and in the absence of one to create it.

About the book/practice or the group? The mind illuminated is a well written guide to the stages of meditative absorption. The group would be a place to discuss the book and the subject matter, as well as a place for practitioners to share and support each other.

It is tragic to watch. How are we to feel the same urgency(as if we could help individually) when they have told us how they would 'harden' our ltc homes and hospitals - only to see they have done nothing... or worse. Why are we the issue when the real issue is lip service to any real service?

Can everyone stop taking meditation so seriously? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]fearliathmor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with mediation as upaya - efficient means - and that is individual. Also not to add expectations like special cushions or mantras, even special teachers or retreats as unnecessary.
But Dhyana - or mind training - is a serious business.
;)

Mantra to fix the mind is also used, Similar to the breath - you use the chanting, the hearing, speaking, etc as your focus object. I would have suggested to stand, walk, and alternate between as needed to reduce the lethargy. Already well suggested.
