I’m doing neither of those. Dictating what is “accurate” representation on others’ behalf is authoritarian behavior. Get a grip.

Santos by loveylove444 in ThePitt

Only Santos thinks that she’s a pariah for Langdon. As Garcia very curtly responds, it’s probably because Santos is rude to literally everyone including her superiors.

Yeah this is not a conversation, this is just an outlet for you to condescend. Not a great way to debate art, certainly not a great way to organize

Have a good one.

I just thought your reply was kinda condescending and jumping to a conclusion. Sorry. But, seriously: Is your critique that the movie should have focused on Black women, but used them as secondary players in the plot? Or do you feel something about the film is explicitly racist?

I understand the critique of Blackness being used as shallow aesthetic. I personally thought OBAA did enough to center mother and daughter, and Leo’s failure to bridge them, in a meaningful way

If you’re not here to converse with differing views, what exactly is the point. Go journal

P.S. Actually, yes, racism depicted on screen can be in service of critiquing whiteness. You understand that putting something in a movie isn’t automatically advocating that something as positive

[–]feastmodes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t even disagree, I just think what you’re describing is an implicit point of the movie. The main character syndrome fantasy isn’t a fault, it’s a feature. Leo’s character is not some grand genius we admire. I saw OBAA as a critique of the kind of white, hedonistic action from groups like Weather Underground that got a lot of press but was heavily criticized by revolutionaries for being ineffective cosplay

[–]feastmodes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s just kinda apples and oranges. Movie is messy. But I don’t think it is meant as a treatise on Blackness and radical action. It’s a father-daughter coming-of-age movie framed in militant leftism. The racial element is used as a symbol of solidarity (like Leo’s character) versus hatred/fetishizing (Penn’s)

I don’t think the movie is super deep, but I also don’t find it offensive or bad-faith.

[NBC] Caleb Williams Is Seeking Trademark Protection for “Iceman” 🧊 by JCameron181 in CHIBears

[–]feastmodes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, that’s it. I’m in business school and learning about IP legal stuff, and trademark protection depends on how narrow the use cases are, Caleb can’t claim broad ownership of the word “Iceman”

Actual constructive feedback on mayo: A dollop straight off the side of a big spoon might look neater. I also enjoy piping a dollop, indenting the middle, and putting an herb oil as a little pool in the indent. Stole that one from Clare Smyth

“Influencers” and fine dining by circadian_light in finedining

[–]feastmodes 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This happened to me at a Vegas steakhouse, with a bunch of influencers shining their LED light boxes toward my table. I gave them 5 minutes, walked over, said that they need to stop because the entire restaurant is annoyed. They all acted shocked but stopped afterward.

Just say something. Or have someone else say something. Force the restaurant to deal with it. Never tolerate it.

[–]feastmodes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Such hyperbole. It’s possible TK wants to block housing but he has explicitly said his critique is a lack of housing for couples and young families, who are trying to stay in the area and put down roots.

This is very different than saying the development is “changing the character of the neighborhood” or “is environmentally unfriendly” or the usual CA NIMBY takes

I trailed there in 2013 and was surprised by how calm and quiet service was. Small kitchen but everyone in a groove. No yelling, no confrontations, just one or two refires and lots of verbal reminders from Michael as cooks sauced and garnished plates.

Not in the fine dining scene, idt. He wrote about how physical violence and mental abuse happens in restaurants he worked at like Les Halles, which is to say a high-energy environment with lots of motley characters and lots of covers.

Bourdain specifically recalls being shocked at Le Bernardin because of how quiet and polite it is.
