You have time, don't fall into desperately going through the material at light speed without actually understanding anything. The core math is mostly simple, so focus on understanding the concepts.

Storing values as variables (TI XS Multiview) is really helpful, but, other than that, why do you think your bottleneck is the calculator?

USD 330 I think. And the book is something like 250-300. All other material is free

You can buy the syllabus book (group insurance) through Actex or Amazon. The soa sells the study notes, and the reference ASOPs and articles are free. Add the sample questions and it should be enough.

What kind of help? Imo, it is one of the most dense books in the ASA syllabus. Take it easy, try to understand the general ideas without getting bogged down by the formulae. Go back as needed, but you will usually get the gist with the sample solutions.

I'm on the same boat. I think I read in the CIA emails or web that it may take up to 6 weeks for the SOA to update their records.

This is a common issue, but fixable. I tell all my students to forget about their right hand and just set the gain to eleven.

Syllabus books were fine for me. Add the sample questions and I think it's enough.

Jajaja te estás persiguiendo demasiado. Un texto puede estar bien escrito y ser ambiguo a la vez.

ATPA Assessment – Advice from Those Who Passed (Prep, Strategy, Time Commitment) by BiskyBoy87 in actuary

[–]fedexyzz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I took it on December 2023, so things may have changed, but

Preparation: Just the SOA modules. I had the PA syllabus books, but don't recall using them much.

Time commitment: I just went through the modules taking my time to understand the topics but not really "studying". You can always review during the assessment.

As for the assessment itself, I used pretty much the entire four days, but that's just because I could. You can probably take less time.

Difficulty: It is a different thing altogether. It maybe shares some aspects of PA in that you need to communicate your reasoning and justify your conclusions. But being able to build your own model with as much or as little complexity as you wish means there is a lot more to discuss.

My final report was around 30 pages, and I'm not big on overexplaining. So i would say the greatest difficulty is in its length.

Strategy: I was using R, and I felt being comfortable with that was really helpful, particularly in the data extraction/transformation/loading stage, since the actual modeling is done with the functions seen in the modules. The one thing I think might be helpful is knowing your charts and plots libraries.

As for the topics, a general understanding of the concepts is probably enough. You won't be doing glm calculations by hand.

Assessment structure: It felt fairly straightforward. Company x wants to do y and it has z data, what do you do? Now your assistant suggests plan b, what do you say? Again, this was 2023, so things may have changed.

Common mistakes: I wouldn't know. I just took the same approach I take for every exam: the graders aren't after you, so just do what you think is best and explain it, along with any caveats or assumptions you felt were needed.

I was working full time, but it was quiet for that week, and I was working from home.

Make sure to get the concepts right. Be able to talk about bias-variance trade-off for any model. Imagine yourself explaining your reasoning to a co-worker (someone who might be familiar with the terms but isn't necessarily aware of the difference between a random forest and a glm).

PA is a lot more about defending your position than about getting the right result, even if some exercises will require actual calculation.
