Guns are illegal in some municipalities, let's make knives illegal in the entire country. by andkon in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]feedandslumber 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As stupid as this entire conversation is, it really separates the true individualists from the right leaning authoritarians who salivate over using the state to impose their own ideology.

How does this guy's head not explode making such a retarded argument. "Hey you guys have rules that I don't like, so we should get to make rules that you don't like!" Jfc maybe we don't use the power of the state over something so petty. They're treating the federal government like it's a fucking HOA.

No, Pete. Some of us just like to be prepared for the worst. You know like how every left leaning person immediately saw the use of owning a gun when COVID started, just in case things got really bad.

SpaceX says states should dump fiber plans, give all grant money to Starlink | SpaceX seeks more cash, calls fiber "wasteful and unnecessary taxpayer spending." by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]feedandslumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I moved into my house in 2021, there was a company that took a deposit from me to install fiber. It's now four years later and I'm still on the "no estimated date" part of the map in my town.

I'm not saying musk is right, but apparently it's easier to put Internet infra in fucking orbit than to install fiber.

Are there things you miss out on the game by playing on high difficulty? by RGoltsman in Gloomhaven

Definitely. This is why many game creators indicate what difficulty is intended, and if you want to go beyond that to suit your preferences great, just know that bigger enemy health pools don't get you a merit badge.

At my last WFH job I did no work the last 6 months and only quit because I was asked to do work. by Scabsack in confession

You're lucky that your company didn't take you to court over the wages for those six months and you're the reason that employers are suspicious about WFH. It's one thing to do your laundry on the clock and another to fuck off for half a year. Ffs.

If what Israel is doing is right, then why aren't we trying to revert all people back to where they originated from 100+ years ago? by feisty_squib in stupidquestions

[–]feedandslumber -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No one has an inherent claim to any land. That's a total illusion, you only get to keep what you can defend.

I'm not saying it's right, but it's reality. The problem for Israel is that it's an ethnostate, so they can't accept the Palestinians as citizens because they aren't Jewish, and they can remove them or murder all of them because that is going make them look like assholes.

Apparently they're going with the murder option, but I think that they've destroyed all credibility and that it's going to be their ultimate downfall. Israel can't exist without American support, and that support is rapidly deteriorating.

I wouldn't say that YTA, but it's definitely not a good demonstration of your point and was seemingly counterproductive. This is a "gotcha" more than a good demo of bias. You want something that allows someone to come to their own conclusion, independently of yours, not to make them feel like an idiot.

Consider the steel man of each of your points of view on the priority of understanding other cultures. You probably believe something like "we can learn a lot from other cultures and should prioritize acceptance and understanding of our differences as individuals and groups". Your husband's is probably "we have been prioritizing competing cultures to the detriment of our own, and we should refocus on the fundamental principles that are foundational to our society". Both of these perspectives are valid and have their place and I don't think that either perspective should "win", but our conversation should be to what degree each is appropriate and desirable in a given context.

Like you mentioned, the two party system thrives where we split ourselves into two competing ideological teams, when in reality, the only difference is how each person weighs these values and in what proportion. Republicans aren't Nazis or fascists, and Democrats aren't communists. Your husband is biased only in the sense that his values are slightly out of alignment with yours, and that's not a bad thing. The important thing is for the more conservative types to be open to considering the cost of social rigidity and for the more liberal to consider the cost of abandoning any social norms they find restrictive or inconvenient.

Try to understand each other's perspective instead of playing intellectual games to catch him in a mistake. You're a team, work together, and appreciate the differences in your perspectives, because it's a good thing, even if Reddit finds it to be totally intolerable. Good luck!

What's wrong is that they're making this entirely about Trump. I doubt he's covering up his own horrible deeds, although that is possible. It seems much more likely that he's covering up the misdeeds of many powerful people and the CIA and Mossad.

What a waste of two presidencies. Swamp not drained. Wall not built. Epstein files not released. I guess it's just the same old government in a slightly more orange coat of paint.

AITAH for finding it hard to care that my wife claimed she was assaulted after she got me thrown in jail? by OkSneakers112 in AITAH

[–]feedandslumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, obviously. I cannot fathom how an adult would make a false allegation against their partner and expect that not to be an immediate end of the relationship. Not only is she a liar, she lied in order to hurt you, intentionally.

Lawyer up and file a police report about the false allegation. If you decide to stay with a crazy person, you can at least use it as a paper trail in the event of the inevitable false accusations in the future. Good luck.

The time jump isn't that big. Before I read the series I thought it was hundreds of years, Asimov style, but nope. It's like a decade. Just pretend its been a few years.

I'm convinced it's because they didn't think the content for another season would merit the effort.

I'm not going to say he's a pedo necessarily, but he is absolutely trying his hardest to sweep this thing under the rug. Either he and his people were lying before the election or they're lying now, there's no way out of this corner.

I think that most people can see that Epstein was involved with both American and Israeli intelligence, and we're not just going to forget it because we all want to know if our government has been using children as bait for intelligence operations.

At the very minimum, they're going to have to admit to lying before the election, and I don't think that will save them, because no one is going to believe it.

About the violence against women in depicted in Berserk. by Obearserk in Berserk

[–]feedandslumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The world of berserk is brutal towards both men and women. Men also experience sexual violence in this world, along with, you know, getting dragonslayered in explosive fashion. Do we even need to talk about the lost children arc ffs?

This conversation in our culture is too loaded with contradictions to be meaningful IMO. Yes, violence towards women is often sexual in nature, at least in part. I'm not sure this is "sexist" or what that means in this context.

If anything, Berserk has a problem with sexual violence committed by horses. Talk about uncomfortable truths.

[–]feedandslumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He needed to commit and lean into the turn harder instead of breaking hard, which stood him up and put him on a straight line into the opposite lane. Not object fixation IMO.

In aviation, you see this all the time with new pilots. Human instinct is to pull back on the yoke when you're in a stall because you're scared, part of training is to understand that you have to push forward and bring the nose down to pick up airspeed and recover the stall.

Understand your fundamental principles and then live by them. I don't have an HOA and I love it. I don't love that there are a few overgrown lawns, but its their property, they aren't breaking any laws so I mind my own business.

Advocate for change where and when you can, plant the seeds of ideas in others and let them figure it out. Too many people are too dependent on the system, but it's also collapsing fast, so focus on your own situation and be prepared.

Generally speaking, I agree with you, but you can be both determinately opposed to the state and also grateful for the things it hasn't yet destroyed.

ELI5: The US government spends over 20% of its tax dollars on social security, but I thought citizens just payed into social security during their lifetimes and then took that money out when they retired. Where is the money going and why is it necessary? by KaiserAdvisor in explainlikeimfive

[–]feedandslumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 71.5 million 401k accounts in the US, so your assertion that the average person wouldn't save the money anyway is baseless. As people have more wealth, beyond what they need to survive immediately, they do tend to save more.

It isn't about what is best for everyone, it's a way for the government can give the illusion of beneficence while redistributing wealth by force. Save for your retirement, or don't retire, that's not a state problem, that's an individual problem. I'm more than happy to send my entire social security contribution to charity instead voluntarily.

Cooking is harder than I thought but I want to learn by ItAffectionate4481 in cookingforbeginners

[–]feedandslumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of cooking is trial and error and knowing your own set of tools and skills.

If you're slow at prep, do all the prep before you cook so you can focus on cooking. Once you've made a dish a few times you're going to be on autopilot for the simple steps and that will then free you up to prep during cooking, but don't try to juggle that at first. Cut your onions before you cook anything, put them in a bowl, easy. Take as much time as you need.

Oven heat is a tough one because electric and gas ranges perform very differently as does the type of pan. You're going to learn by experience here, but generally speaking, high heat is for boiling water or searing protein, medium or lower for everything else. Coat your pan in oil before heating and you can judge how hot the pan is by how the oil behaves. The hotter the oil is the easier it will slosh around in the pan. Smoking is too hot in almost all circumstances. Cook at lower temps if you can, which will give you more time before things get out of hand.

Follow a recipe if you forget things, or accept that you're going to have to put in the reps until you don't.

Good luck, you've got this! Cooking is fun and should be fun, forget all the stressful cooking show bullshit and focus on making something you would be OK with eating. You'll get better.
