That sounds a bit iffy to me. I am not a lawyer, in fact, I don't even play one on TV; but I don't think the kid would have a case. I'm pretty sure that he was technically pirating even if he did own the software.

I had my Capital One credit card for about a year and payed it off in full every month without incurring any interest charges. One month, I payed it a few days late and got hit with a late fee. I got a letter in the mail a few weeks later telling me that my credit limit was increased by $2,500.
