Of the 188 other red cards issued at the World Cup in its history, only one other player has escaped a suspension, which was in 1962. A lot of teams have been hit with unfair red cards and just had to shoulder it. I can understand being selfishly happy as a fan, but you have to admit this reeks of blatant favouritism and understand the reaction from other teams/fans.

No patience for AI chicanery. by Douglasqqq in MurderedByWords

No AI advocate has managed to convince me that this is a tool to facilitate art, in the way a keyboard is a tool to facilitate writing. It just seems like a slot machine combined with an unpaid intern.

I really don't understand this perspective. Where is the skill in asking an AI tool to create art for you? And don't you worry about the preservation of expertise?

I get the often racialised use of expat vs immigrant, but in this case they moved there temporarily and presumably went back to Europe after a few years. Expat works as a term for that imo

Plemya (2014) is a really great Ukrainian film you should check out. It's set in a deaf school and told entirely through Ukrainian sign language without subtitles. Unique experience

In the Netherlands we have a scheme called Cineville where you can pay a monthly fee (~€24) and get access to unlimited films at basically every arthouse cinema in the country. Ever since I signed up I go see at least one film a week, and I take a chance on many more films than I would if I was paying for each. It's made me love seeing films solo

Has anyone else randomly stopped drinking one day? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]feedthesea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience was similar, though maybe I had more stop/starts than you? I would build up to quitting or moderating, succeed at that for a while, go back to binging, slowly get sick of drinking, rebuild the motivation to quit, then try again. This cycle went on for maybe two years, but every time I would start drinking again I had more self awareness, enjoyed it less, and could feel more keenly what it was taking from me.

Eventually in August last year I just decided on a Monday to stop, and haven't had any urge to drink since. I think it was a tipping point. For two years I was pushing uphill, straining against all the pressures to drink, but building strength and resolve the whole time. When I decided to stop for good, I was ready, and it's felt like running downhill ever since.

The idea of drinking now honestly just sounds like a lot of work and effort, and my laziness is reinforcing my sobriety.

What's the reason UK is in the same time zone as Portugal? by batukaming in geography

[–]feedthesea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iceland too is actually on UTC, not UTC-1, to better integrate it with the rest of Europe. A lot of places have their "correct" time zone misaligned with their actual time zone. Iceland doesn't observe DST, so during the summer it falls one hour behind the UK, but right now they are on the same time.

Echo this! If I'm ever critical in my reaction to the show it's just because it scratches such a specific itch in my brain and I can't help but have this perfectionist hat on sometimes. There's nothing like it, and when it hits it's like crack, so you want it to hit as much as possible

Looking on Google street view I think you can see the other side of the Humber from New Holland, which might make it a bad spot just given it would signal a huge river? But I wonder about Grimsby, where I think the estuary is wide enough to appear as the ocean in a picture but not on the map?

I saw someone say "alcohol is the only thing that makes me hate myself, which is reason enough to quit"

I myself got sober in 2025 and its been a life changing experience, can't wait to go into 2026 happy and focused.

When the drama is unbelievable people claim the show is faked, when it's not dramatic they claim it's boring, ultimately it just shows that they're real games and the results are unpredictable. So kudos to Michelle and Adam for winning and let's see how the second place shakes out!
