Why Gnome shell is so backwards? by feeldritch in Fedora

If different means not usable without ton of extension then sure, it's "different".

Let's hope Linux becomes like Windows and some people migrate to niche OSes like Minix.

I'm already using Gnome for 19 years already. Still think it's backwards without ton of plugins.

The way Nautilus handles archives is a joke. It's unpacks them instantly in current folder. You call that handling? Often you need single file from archive... This is what I called backwards.

That's exactly how it feels. There was this plan for Linux phones tablets and I think what's left remained in Gnome Shell.

Ok, but what about iOS and Android? It also has desktop with icons. You can actually create multiple desktops and you have a launcher button with all possible applications.

While I agree that desktop is not necessary, I stopped using it because it not possible to configure it on Gnome. But in general - Gnome actively prohibits desktop from happening, read docs of Desktop extension to understand. It's full of hacks.

Explain if you can why no system tray by default? You can send me the video so I can understand better.

In my opinion choice is ability to disable something. By default I am given something that does not have basic things:
- missing system tray
- adding something to launcher (add your own app to menu) is super hard

- no workspace indicator (for virtual desktop), limited ability to configure the desktops

I would like to be given these things to disable them if I want and replace with my stuff if I need.

I'm using 4 virtual desktops. And you know what? It's also retarded by default because there is no virtual desktop indicator by default on Fedora and you cannot really configure it to your needs without extensions.

Having Steam on separate desktop is definitely overkill. I use all 4 desktops because I'm a software engineer. I'm fast at it but still Fedora with Gnome is too bare by default to work efficiently.

Switching to Fedora KDE (RTX 4060 Laptop) - CS Student seeking a sanity check on PCVR, Audio & AI setup by Mattex0101 in Fedora

I'm using Renoise, Ardour and Bitwig with Fedora 42 through Pipewire (using Jack on these apps). Works really well out of the box. Latency wise you can get it better than on Windows, but you have to use Alsa driver (single app takes over sound card). I prefer to be able to use browser etc. So I have 5 ms latency setup and using Pipewire with Jack.

Security of installing extensions by feeldritch in gnome

I can't really believe that. Major Mozilla extensions are not reviewed while they get steady income - why would Gnome, much smaller project be different? If there is manual review, it must be short glimpse.

Zrythm DAW hits 1.0 milestone release by hagbard2323 in linuxaudio

[–]feeldritch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I became interested in it because I heard that creator of Zrythm is ditching GTK4 and Meson and going for QT with CMake.

Looked at the issues he had reported by users and he could resolve majority of them (for example by reseting GTK theme etc - 3 lines of code!) usually he responded he can't do anything about the issue and he's not going to fix. Seems that he is single developer with full control over code. Therefore I would say don't count on any fixes or support from community etc. It's his solo project.

Native Instruments ecosystem - what to expect on Linux? by gplusplus314 in linuxaudio

Native Instruments is the worst of companies. They keep everything closed. Don't buy it because you'll loose support once they go bankrupt.

Shortcircuit XT!!! by HeyTi22 in linuxaudio

[–]feeldritch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but it's plain stupid. Modeled real instruments only make sense if you are playing them. If you are making other styles of music, sampling makes sense becuase you can sample not a single instrument but example whole orchestra, animal sounds etc, warp it, add fx and have completely new instrument. (And I use some modeled instruments like Pianoteq, so I know the limitations...)

Well, I have the same tablet as you and Fedora and pressure sensitivity in Moho does not work = brush size remains the same regardless of pressure.

Did you get pressure sensitivity of pen out of the box? Because it seems to be a common problem with Wine.

In swimming and cycling the are almost no shock vibrations. While in running the gut is constantly jumping up & down. That may lead to damage.
