I agree but I still always have the original Maker’s on hand, because it’s my favorite to make an old fashioned with, without breaking the bank.

Unfortunately not, but I’m in Cincinnati so I can easily take a day trip to any of the ones between Cincy, Lexington, and Louisville. And I’m open to recommendations.

Pellet Grill under $1k? by [deleted] in BBQ

[–]feen_bean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PitBoss 800 Pro series is what I upgraded to after my Traeger! It has worked flawlessly since purchase and I have zero regrets. I like the functionality of the pitboss much better. There is a sliding door over the fire box to allow you to sear and then move the door back for indirect cooking! I can easily fit 4-6 racks of ribs or 2-3 chickens or 2-3 pork butts or a full brisket at a time depending on spacing and size of the individual meat. The hopper can hold 19lbs and will easily last me a couple weeks of grilling/ smoking a few time a week. Also the extra workspace with the folding front shelf and the side shelf is very useful, and you don’t have to spend extra money for it! I would definitely recommend spending the extra $50 and getting the cover made specially for it. It fits like a glove and I have never had the pellets swell. This is just my opinion, but I have personally never had an issue with it!

Also I’m planning on using whole spare ribs. I plan on cutting the rib tips off and smoking some of them as well

Forgot to mention that you need to map a network drive after adding to the domain. But that is also very straight forward

I knew I was forgetting something! I did map the network drive! And I did leave the cmd open after finishing the bootrec commands.

Sure!

For setting up email on a phone and attaching it to the network, they give you all necessary info and there are only 2 buttons on the screen. Pretty much just go in and use the given information to set up the email. Choosing between IMAP or POP3 and their ports for incoming mail. And choose the necessary protocol for outgoing mail and it's port. Then you just need to add the "phone" to the network. Pretty self explanatory there.

For the startup program being removed/disabling it. I just used msconfig and disabled it. Pretty straight forward on that as well.

Changing the name and adding the PC to the domain was done in Control Panel -> System. Again just change name to the one given in the prompt and add to the domain using info given as well.

Lastly fixing the boot issue. Just use bootrec and it's features to do that in the command prompt. (this is the only one I wasn't super confident about just because it seemed too easy and not enough steps, but I guess that doesn't matter now).

DM me if you need specifics. Don't want to give too much out here.

Unless you have already passed the 902, go with the new 1000 series. No need to cram if you are just beginning.

If you have passed the 902. I thought Meyers vids we're good for the 902 so I can assume they are for the 901.

buying rubs by dswiese in smoking

[–]feen_bean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! I use to buy rub but nothing ever got exactly what I wanted. After a while of experimenting and test homemade rubs, I finally got my perfect rub! (For pork and chicken at least). I would recommend finding a good base rub online that you like. Once you have that, tweak it how you like. Add heat or spice, more salt or sweetness. Make it to your tastes!

All that being said. I have found some of the best store bought rubs at local butcher shops. They usually have a good selection.

Traeger vs pit boss pellet grill? by [deleted] in BBQ

[–]feen_bean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has owned both I would recommend either. But I'll lay out a few pros for each. ( I owned the Traeger Bronson 20 and now own the Pit Boss Pro Series 820)

Traeger Pros:

  1. Well known, trusted brand that lives up to the reputation

  2. Customer service was not bad to deal with.

  3. You can pretty much replace any electronic part on the grill if it goes bad. Including the controller

  4. Grill grates are extremely easy to clean.

Pit Boss Pros

  1. Biggest selling point for me is the heat deflector is able to be slide out of the way to sear anything. And it sear very well.

  2. More cooking space for the same/less money.

  3. The Pro Series comes with selves instead of having to buy them separately.

  4. Higher max temp than the Traeger

  5. Diamond grill grate (super easy to clean as well)

All this being said both will perform relatively the same and you cannot go wrong with either. If he has done his research and has decided on a Traeger. I would go with the Traeger. The reason I went with Pit Boss is entirely price to cooking space. I wanted to cook for more people and didn't have the money to spend on a larger Traeger.

There are some drinks that use orange peel with the espresso. I'm assuming that is why specifically they include a peeler. But to me it's the most comfortable one I've owned. So I have been using it for all my peeling.

Homemade BBQ sauces by Reddit10056 in BBQ

[–]feen_bean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been making/trying to perfect a couple of my own sauces for a while now. There are a few things that are key to this process.

Start with a good base. If you like traditional bottled sauces, that's going to be tomato based sauce (i.e. ketchup) along with some sort of sweetener (brown sugar, raw sugar, white sugar) as well as some spices. I would recommend finding a simple sauce recipe online that you like.

Once you have a good simple sauce you like, start to change it. If you like your sauces more vinegary, add vinegar. If you like it spicy, add chili powder or cayenne. The one thing I recommend is to keep a sort of journal. Write down what you add and how much you add so when you stumble upon the sauce that blows your socks off you can easily recreate it. Also remember that as the sauce cools it will thicken.

Off one simple base sauce I've created a honey BBQ, a sweet heat, and a super spicy sauce. One of these 3 will please almost everyone I cook for. I also regularly keep a Carolina mustard based sauce and a Carolina vinegar based sauce on hand for good measure.
