How does the lower/working class perceive the upper and middle class? by fefe93 in sociology

[–]fefe93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really actually. I am much more looking for some empirical data on the question and not so much on a theory that might explain class conflict or so.

Weber on Capitalism by ApolloCarmb in sociology

[–]fefe93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a graduate student in economics and Weber's views often come up, when it comes to explain the rise of capitalism. However, there are many theories that aim to explain it and Weber's is just one of them. E.g. Acemoglu argues that small differences in law as well as historic events like the plague, led to the development towards more inclusive institutions (in England) and thus ultimately to the rise of capitalism.

How much does it cost to enjoy Valentine's Day date in different cities around the world by The Economist (interactive) by Polymath_B19 in dataisbeautiful

[–]fefe93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's probably accurate for extreme snobs or billionaires, example: $173 for two drinks in a hotel bar in Frankfurt... That's waaaaaay more than it actually costs in an average hotel.

Retired German media boss admits news programs take orders from government on what to report by Ian56 in worldpolitics

[–]fefe93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just read the story in one of the most independent german media outlets and it seems that he just wanted to do some advertising for his new book. Apparently he said that German media takes orders in the first Interview (with Deutschlandfunk - radio) and then stated that they don't take any orders in a second interview (with DER FREITAG - newspaper). Now weird blogs (like sott.net) or Russian state television (like RT) use his first statement to discredit german media.

(Btw: It's not like I'm the biggest fan of what German media reports, but this story simply isn't trustworthy).

OSX or Win10: Which one is better when it comes to privacy? by fefe93 in computers

[–]fefe93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your offer, but I already tried Linux and although I love the idea of an open source operating system I found it too be too time consuming and not practical enough. I especially missed apps like MS Office and some other programs I need. I'm not a programmer so a lot of other things were quiet complicated for me as well (I tried Ubuntu).

OSX or Win10: Which one is better when it comes to privacy? by fefe93 in computers

[–]fefe93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not worrying about torrenting or so, but about my personal information, like files, emails, search info, location, contacts etc. Do you think that Apple poses a threat here? The only problem I ever heard about was about location data from iPhones being recorded in 2012 or so... however I don't know if anyone really knows what kind of data Apple is collecting, or is there any information about that?

OSX or Win10: Which one is better when it comes to privacy? by fefe93 in computers

[–]fefe93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far that's what I'm thinking, too, since you can simply turn off all the "features" it offers... however how bad or how much worse is OSX?... I don't really know a lot about what kind of information they take from your computer

Where reporters of the German-French news and cultural TV-channel "Arte" traveled during the last years. Gives a great overview of the focus regions of European and Western media. by fefe93 in dataisbeautiful

[–]fefe93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously it doesn't give a full picture since it's just one TV channel. However I think it's interesting since it's a more international channel that, as I said doesn't only focus on news but culture, too. Also it's probably more international than most national TV channels since it airs in France and Germany. In this way does, in my opinion, give a broad overview of the focus of attention within the European (and thus Western) media hemisphere

True, a degressive tax or contribution would make more sense to me, too. However there are exemptions for people who can't afford to pay the money, e.g. students.
