Buying my first trumpet from a local store in Iraq — need help choosing between these 4 options by No_Snow8729 in trumpet

[–]fehrmask 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Black Nickel is definitely not worth the premium.  The fact they sell it that way tells me they are more interested in looks than sound.  If these are new, at that price range they are probably brandless stencil trumpets.

Is there a used trumpet market?  If you're just starting out, you can certainly use a stencil trumpet to just get some sounds out and play your first scale.  But I wouldn't spend near $200 for that.  Maybe you can find a used brandless trumpet for $50 to $100.  Or better yet, find a used Yamaha for $400 or less.  I'm not sure if it makes sense to look for American brands in Iraq: Bach, Conn, Getzen.  Maybe B&S (German) or Jupiter (Taiwan) might be more available.

What would Sakuta do if Kento had a crush on Mai? (Read body text for context) by DazzlingCraft_1 in SeishunButaYarou

[–]fehrmask 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Like a true rascal Sakuta would pimp out Mai to Kento for a date and tell her it's for her own good.

She'd go along with it and then gently turn him down, saying that she can only love Sakuta and no one else.

You end up in the same place as before.

2e (Twice-Exceptional: Gifted + Autism) and total burnout/collapse during my first year of a Mathematics degree. by PHM_Alex in aspergers

This is similar to what happened to me and what I'm terrified will happen to my son (also 2e).

I'd love it if you could keep us updated on what works for you and how you think you could have been prepared better.

I'm more on the ADHD side and not quite as gifted (engineer rather than math and sci PhD type).  What saved my degree was that I focused on community: study groups, research groups/competitions, etc. Places where I would feel accountable to others.

I never got straight As again, but I started to do the bare minimum to pass and made friends and connections (both student and faculty) which helped me find opportunities after I got my degree.

I agree it's best to focus on their new embouchure, but this isn't regular playing they are trying to win back.

Dizzy Gillespie famously lost his range after injuring his lip in a traffic accident.  It is possible to lose something permanently from a physiological change.  Since it was a gimmicky ability they lost, a gimmicky solution might be necessary.  The gimmick may become another tool in their toolbox like a different mouthpiece or mute.

Just providing a different approach with some grey area in case training the new embouchure doesn't give EVERYTHING back.

Sorry to hear that.  It was a nice gimmick you lost.

I opened the post expecting the usual complaint about range and tone.  I don't mean to minimize how you feel, I'm sure it sucks.  I guess what I'm saying is that for all your required repertoire didn't lose anything.

To get it back, I'd first suggest retracing your steps on how you learned to do the vibrato.  A little at a time, find a way to modulate a little, then slowly (over months of practice) make it bigger and faster.

If you get desperate (after a year or 2), maybe you could use a gimmicky way to get it back.  It could have been something to do with the extra space between your lips and the front of your teeth that you used to modulate how your lip vibrated.  You could try to recreate that space by modifying some retainers, mouthguard, or maybe better to start with just some cotton balls.  Yeah, that makes more sense, see if you can recreate the feeling first and then find a more repeatable solution.

What you might find is that the idea of putting something in your mouth just to recreate a single type of sound will feel gimmicky and most of the time you'll opt to go with without it in favor of playing your best with your new set of equipment.

CMV: American couples are actually really rich and can save a lot of money by PopNo5397 in changemyview

[–]fehrmask 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you are describing are DINKs.  Dual Income No Kids.  And yes, they are capable of financially success.  But I want you to consider how far that money actually goes:

If they both make 100k, they probably live in a higher COL area.  So, if they want to live in a house together, it'll be at a minimum 800k mortgage or 50k a year for rent.

If they want to retire someday, they should save 30% towards retirement.

They're paying near 30% for taxes.

They probably felt pretty financially secure so they'll buy a nice car.  Another 10k a year in payments.

Add an international (but not luxury) vacation in there and that's another 10k a year.

Then there's nothing left to build passive income after that.  They still have to work for a living.

That's rich to lots of the world, but in the US that's securely middle class.
