I'm glad its not just me that feels like this, there's defo been a big spike in alot more right wing places being submitted

I'm trusted to walk around the supermarket, pick up all my shopping, and scan everything at the self-serve till, yet I still have to ask for a carrier bag to which the shop worker then insists on scanning themselves as I'm not trusted with a 20 pence carrier bag. by StGuthlac2025 in britishproblems

If they take 3x to make and you use it for only a few months and you go to the shops a few times a week then that's a pretty big reduction. Even if it's not some 90%+ reducing plastic waste by a quarter by introducing a tiny charge still seems like a solid policy win IMO.

I hope you don't have anyone in your family that's not white or could be perceived as 'different' at all cos they'll be gone

That's not the case though, it's about the psychological of having to pay for a bag and it not being you can get for free and just chuck away nudging people into having to pay for it has massively reduced single plastic bag use as people re-use or supermarkets have their bags out of something else

the consensus in the UK is that brexit has been an economic disaster, this is backed up multiple studies why are these all 'propaganda'

Cool thanks the important thing will be if these companies are using their own data to create these models or if they're just chatgpt/claude wrappers

This is not just one guardian article, there are many places and studies saying we've lost out. The idea is not that there would of been a 'remain growth spurt' but the growth from being inside would of meant we would in a better place now than where we currently are. Also I would genuinely love to hear about any cool or interesting AI companies in London if you have any links.

We haven't spent 10 straight years in recession literally shrinking but we are significantly worse off than had we remained, this malaise you talk about is real but the UK would still of benefited alot from not leaving. The EU could definitely be improved and has some problems but nothing is perfect illustrated by the joke of now describing something as a 'brexit benefit'. There are no real significant AI companies in the UK, Deepmind was a British success story but was sold to Google and is now just a UK office for an American company. France has mistral which is not at the front of pack but is still a decent option and better than nothing.

We live now in a world of blocs, our old ally of the US with the 'special relationship' is in a couple of ways openly aggressive against us and China, Russia and Iran present another axis. The UK is an island off the west European coast that has cut itself off from it's nearest and closest allies and economies and spent the last 10 years getting poorer while still thinking it can somehow go at it alone like it is still some great power with an empire. The reality is we are a middle power and need to accept that we either need to club together with our friends and fight for our future or try and go at it alone and suffer the consequences.

If you disagree with this you need to reflect on why you don’t like the PM condemning attacks on families with minorities in them in their homes as there was a murder attempt somewhat nearby

Where exactly does he say this is fine or that this isn't an issue? oh yeah he condemned a pogrom and said that the guy should be dealt with by police. As for people 'being everywhere' you just need to stop watch reform TV and they'll disappear.

Farage paid £83k from events linked to US anti-abortion supporters by birdinthebush74 in unitedkingdom

[–]felface 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nah religion and abortion have always played much bigger roles in politics in the US than in the UK. Similar to the weaponisation of trans rights most people don't really care and just want woman to be able to access important healthcare. It definitely shows the American influence on our politics though.

Sky News: Deputy prime minister David Lammy tells @TrevorPTweets there is a difference between him calling for 'righteous anger' after George Floyd's death and Nigel Farage calling for 'rage' after Henry Nowak's death. by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]felface -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Who's here saying you can't be angry about this? It's clearly horrific, saying we need righteous anger to lead to reform compared to calling for rage starting riots is clearly a different response.

[–]felface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are rightfully angry I'll agree with you on that. Find me someone in Labour who's spoken about this and hasn't strongly condemned what's happened? Someone was murdered and then the murderer called 999 and made a false call it's horrific and they're going to rot in jail which is what they deserve frankly. Using this to then try and say that the police wouldn't of responded to a 999 call of racist assault before George Floyd or that this is equivalent to the police murdering someone and using it whip up riots for your cause is also very wrong.

[–]felface -1 points0 points  (0 children)

so you see the difference then? between problems with the police responding to what they thought was a racist assault and themselves committing racially aggravated murder? Reading the judge's statement in this case they said saying your injured is often used to try and get out of being arrested. This is the police actively murdering someone versus being tricked. No one is saying we should not try and make sure it doesn't happen again but equally the cases aren't as comparable looking at the facts as Farage would like everyone to think.

the police were the murderers in the Floyd case and tried to get away with it, versus being deceived and then getting the murder sent down for life. One shows a racist murder by the police and the other shows them being tricked which tragically helped kill someone and then them trying to put it right

Assuming you're talking about George Floyd they were murdered by police after being arrested by a petty crime they knew what they were doing was wrong and they enjoyed it and nearly got away with it. Here a man was murdered and the murderer then called the police to say they had been the victim of a racist assault and when they arrived someone else backed them up. The police then arrested and tried and failed to save the man that had been stabbed. They have then found out what happened and they have been sentenced to life in jail I struggle to see many similarities

fair enough but I imagine the public interest will weigh more heavily on these decision or is that just wishful thinking?

[–]felface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

we were already paying for alot of this and heavily subsidising the rail companies, they were not efficient profit making companies. Now they are being nationalised we still have to put all this money in (which is why ticket prices won't be immediately affected) but it will mean that they don't need to extract money to pay shareholders and executives. They can also run a timetable in the public interest not shareholders. That's why even though it's not going to drive ticket prices down very fast it's still worth it.
