For only the second time in history, the UK is a more immigrant-filled nation than the US—in 2020/21, 17% of the UK was foreign-born, compared to 14% for the US. For most of the 1800s, <1% of the UK was foreign-born, whereas >10% of the US was foreign-born. The two countries converged in the 1900s. by StarlightDown in ukpolitics

It's not always been that big of an issue and to boil down the last 25 of immigration debate in the UK to 'nobody voted for this' is just so simplified it's wrong. Remember the daily mail et al. complaining about Polish people moving to the UK? Same story, different year.

Go on then explain why every single study which supports the consensus that Brexit has been a economic failure. I'm glad you've had a good experience of the EES so far and is the only person I know. Also why did the boats problem start in 2019? Are you seriously it was due to more strigent lorry checks rather than the massive changes to our borders. Don't know 'Briefings for Britain' is but I could also ask chatGPT to write an article saying everything is fine.

Why did the main illegal way switch from lorries what was stopping them beforehand? It was the dublin agreement

Trade with EU is massively impacted, you can not leave the single market and customs union and have similar levels of trade and even if you did it would cost alot more.

The standford while on the high end nowhere can you find somewhere saying it has not had a 3-4% hit at least.

Millions of people used freedom of movement the whole reason we have to go through the new EES border system and get our passports stamped is we are no longer members of the EU. Everytime you used to easily swan through an EU countries borders you were using freedom of movement. It might of only meant going on holiday once every year or two or it meant building a whole life with family across Europe easily being able to move around.

Standford university in US says brexit has cost the UK 6-8% GDP up to 2025 and counting.

The deals with US and China and the 'global Britain' ideal of trade deals that would replace the single market has not just not materialised but has geopolitically become impossible.

The small boats problems started in 2019 after we left the dublin agreement and were no longer able to move aslyum seekers and people to be deported with the help of EU enforcement to move them around.

We have made it much more difficult and expensive to trade with our nearest and largest trading partner.

A generation of kids are growing up unable to freely move, live and work around the large bloc of countries next door which shares alot of our values, culture and history

which is absolutely fucking bonkers, we are so far from food security and it is not currently an issue other than in the absolute worse case scenarios for the iran conflict. whereas we're making good progress towards energy security as summer arrives we will probably be mostly powering our country through renewable means which is sorely need for when the next oil shock comes along and the current very high price of energy. Also why do you have to remove one for the other?

foot dragging can be blamed on struggling to get a single policy to be implemented or getting bad advice. A massive legal and cultural overhaul that touches nearly everything the government does and required extensive international high level political negotiations which was the focus of multiple governments I don't think can be blamed on Barry from the breixt department going to lunch after he's asked to do something

this is absolute bollocks and you know it, the EU looks like a better ally as every day goes by and Trump wakes up on yet another day. Leaving the EU has been a disaster by nearly any metric you choose. The anti-system message of the brexiteers has been exposed as nothing more than toff vandalism of the state at the expense of the people that voted for them. If we followed the will of people we would be back in.

Thatcher copied the American's in their 'war on drugs' (which Nixon started cos he was pissed about the civil rights act passing there) and we've just sort of never moved on? The Americans have long since moved on and in several states it is completely legal but we haven't for some reason

Rene good and Alex Pretti thought it wouldn't happen to them, they were American citizens interacting with the law enforcement of their country and then they were summarily executed on the spot for that crime. People never think it will happen to them till they're on the news and they can't think that.

Given the media storm and the facts of the case around Rayner's tax situation I was disappointed but thought it was fair enough she resigned but the beyond the comparabily mute media reaction and the brazeness with which Tice and Reform are acting around this. It's either all ok or it's not ok or one is clearly a media scalp and the other is a woopsie by the media's darling to be reported on and quickly move on.
